One of the best scores in film music history to a film masterpiece! Should be in every list!

It is undoubtedly one of the Greatest soundtracks RIP Gerry Goldsmith .

Bought this score when it first came out. Masterpiece then, masterpiece now. Filled with incredible creativity & imagination, combined with stirring, uplifting music of the highest order. The film was pretty violent for its time, so my theory is that Mr. Goldsmith went 'above and beyond' to infuse the score with healing, lyrical, therapeutic music while still managing to be intellectually challenging and ultimately one of the most satisfying works of his career. Liked & subscribed!

One Jerry's best melodies, I can listen to it all day.

NOT Morricone's score, but composition of British Musical Director Jerry Goldsmiths👍Haunting soundtrack melody which was composed to suit the mood of contextual time..incorporating tune of French accordeon to highlight French music, given the story was based in French Guiana - still a present day French colony in South America.🤔

1973’s Papillon (recently it got a remake…), starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman in great performances, brought a well captured escape drama to audiences around the globe. The music, composed by Jerry Goldsmith is fitting as always. Although there isn’t a great load of music in the picture it hits, when it appears, especially so well-orchestrated cues like “Catching Butterflies” or “Gift From The Sea”, not to mention one of Goldsmith’s major pieces itself: The “Theme From Papillon”. Enjoy!

Love the movie and for sure one of my all time favourite Goldsmith score. The scene which, without fail even 30 years on, which still drives tears to my eyes each time I watch the movie is when Dega and Papillon meet again on Devils Island. The motions of that scene and Jerry setting the theme in a minor key to it with that almost painfully slow piano motif in the left hand makes the scene almost unbearable for me.

Thank you, Soundtrack Fred, for posting this soundtrack as well as many others. I love the lone accordion and the poignant resonance amidst the hope and hopelessness of the most notorious penal colony in French Guiana.

I can never forget this movie.

I read this story Papillon in TAMIL version long ago for more than 50 times. Same also I have in English version which I read two times. Already I am very much fond steve since his performance in Great escape. This movies I saw more than three times. Now only I am hearing theme song as well as re recording. Really it make some excitement in my mind and heart. I do not know why. It gives tear shed feel.

I saw it at the cinema when flicks still had intervals (intermissions), in our case a dodgy back street, waiting for the reel to be changed.

Solo tenia 3 años de edad cuando esta película fue estrenada, pero su Banda Sonora está impregnada en mi, a niveles del ADN. 🧬 Si, a mi también me parece que le robaron el Oscar a Goldsmith! Steve McQueen especialista en películas de encierros, escapes y persecuciones! Dustin Hoffman, ya era una experimentada estrella a estas alturas, no se amilanó ante la fama y sobra gigante que proyectaba McQueen! Como dije un Temázo para una aún más grande obra cinematográfica! 🎥 🍿

Thanks Fred for posting the score. I haven't seen the remake but I was wondering if you did how was it and it's score?? I questioned why remake a movie that seems pretty good to begin with.

Hello Toon Boy, I didn't see it, but I am not really interested to do it, too. I liked the original movie. It's not my favorite but I am not into seeing another version of it. Or in your words: Why should one, if you have a decent original? If somebody strongly recommends something like that to me, I would watch, of course! Best! Fred
