Paperlike vs ESR Paper-Feel - Which is the best value?

Here i test and review both brands of matter paper feeling screen protectors made by Paperlike and ESR. Paperlike is almost twice the price and so I was interested to see if paying the extra is really worth it?

I remember using the first version of Paperlike on my iPad Pro in 2018. For writing, it was ok, but for making art? It was rubbish due to the severe colour distortion. The rainbow stripes were so bad, yet none of the reviewers (some were artists) at the time pointed out the obvious flaw. Don't know about the newer versions, but after that experience alone I've learnt not to trust KZread reviewers over Paperlike because they're mostly just paid ads.

Thanks for doing this video-I’ve only used Paperlike, so I’ve wondered about the quality of the other brands. I’ve struggled with applying them, even ended up wasting a version 2 of Paperlike, because it bent when I was trying to remove the backing. Sounds like I have a choice to make, regarding the trade off of wearing on the pencil nibs.

Used the ESR matte screen on iPad Pro. I would say the first months were excellent but after some maybe 8 months, the matte screen protector is now very slippery. Writing on it feels slippery and I experiences less control so writing needs more effort to have clean handwriting. I haven’t used the Paperlike so I really can’t compare both.

  • @0hkie

Just saying, The paperlike was installed incorrectly on the second go as well - You installed it upside down, which can happen very easily. When installed upside down it loses pretty much all of its matte / antireflective coating. This is also the reason it was scuffed up so much on the 5 min test. I did the same with one of my paperlikes and yeah, the same thing happened. However, I now use a brand called BERSEM Papernano. They're 9.99 on amazon for 2.

Got mine today and I'm disappointed. I don't feel my writing experience is better. Even though there's a bit of a rough texture to it while making lines, this texture isn't consistent across all parts of the screen (maybe just an issue with mine?). The texture doesn't slow the pencil down enough to really make a significant difference while writing. It's only notable when making long lines (drawing), but for writing I think it would need to be rougher. To make things worse, I actually dislike how it feels when touching the screen with my fingers. Installation wasn't great. The cleaning accessories are pathetic, smaller than the stuff you get with cheap screen protectors from Ali. The part which you're supposed to stick on first has very low adhesion, so when you try to remove the rest of the protective bit, it's really easy to pull away the whole thing and get a bunch of dust under it. And yes, that's exactly what happened to me. The image degradation is huge. Not only are colors significantly worse, viewing angles are worse as well, to a point where just shifting my head slightly changes the perceived colors on the screen. It's noticeable even while just taking notes on a white background. There's this very grainy pattern across the whole screen, looks like miniature water drops. And although there aren't any straight up reflections, light sources at angles add this hue which ends up affecting a large section of the screen and makes readability much worse. Overall, even if this technically reduces glare, it ads so many negative properties to the screen that the glossy finish ends up performing better overall.
