paperback to antique hardcover // book rebinding

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

vol. 1 - rebinding a paperback into a faux antique hardcover.
because i have a deep hatred for modern book covers, but i love to read modern books.... this is my solution.
eventually i would like to also show how to rebind with cloth or faux leather, as well as how to rebind hardcovers.
as always, i simply made these for myself and thought i might share the process.

notes i wanted to add: -if your paper is large enough to fold over the hardcover you might not need to paint (up to you). If it folds over on all sides then miter the corners so they fold neatly. -i dislike the painting step but it was the only solution i could come up with to fill all the white parts that printing could not cover. -you’ve gotta seal them when finished. if any water drops get on there it will bleed since its just printed paper. xx

Have you tried it with fabric for kind of an old clothbound look? I've been wanting to but I'm afraid I'll mess it up. I imagine that would be less likely to need paint or bleed, but it wouldn't have the antique titles etc., and I really like that about yours!

I suppose the other option you could have too, if you're graphic design inclined, is to design/create your own antique looking cover prints, with the correct titles. Then you don't need the extra labels on the books. Its a lot of work...but I mean if you're already going to the effort of recovering your books anyway (and have that design/art skill set) I figure why not! Love the aesthetic and relaxing vibe of the video btw.

I love this! Quick tip for anyone who wants to try book(re)binding: make sure the paper grain (of the replacement cover) is parallel to the spine, that way you'll prevent a lot of creasing and unevenness when folding and gluing the paper. I suggest looking up different ways to check the grain, there are quite a few easy techniques and it makes all the difference when binding books :) (the grain direction on A3 sheets is most often parallel to the shorter side - in this case, the spine - so if you're working with the same dimensions as mckenna, you should generally be fine)

this is inspiring me to add a hardcover to my favourite books 🥺 i definitely don’t have the commitment to do all of them but i could definitely manage a couple favourites! i’ve made books before with fabric covers and it could be a cool idea to get the design you want printed on some fabric (you can get it custom printed!) to take it a step further. this has got so much inspiration flowing for me 💕

such a good idea! i can only imagine how beautiful your shelves must be. if you're open to a few tips, i'd love to share my knowledge of bookbinding as well. namely, i'd recommend using a ph neutral glue (which will maintain its flexibility and won't yellow over time) and binders board as opposed to mounting board. binder's board is made in such a way that it is denser than most other materials at a similar thickness and so it resists warping better.
