    I think this was a great way to demonstrate the energy of a percussion cap. Great idea Dustin.

    for a certain ignition, you can dip your cartridges in collodion, all the paper part of course, not the ball, and let dry, it’s very fast. And in addition to helping the ignition, it makes the cartridges waterproof... which is not negligible...👍

    What is collodion and where can it be obtained? Thanks very much.

    @@johndilday1846Collodion is composed of nitrocellulose dissolved in a mixture of ether and alcohol and preserved in liquid or film form once the solvent has evaporated. In France it is found in pharmacies, in the USA I do not know, you can make an erzatz by disolvant powder (with us I know which, with you?) in acetone. it is also a product used to form false scars (it is also known as Scarring Material).

    Occasionally a bit of paper will backfire up the nipple and if you don't pick the nipples at least every other reload you can get a clogged nipple.

    If the paper is nitrated... Treated with a bath of water and potassium nitrate, then dried... Before making it into a cartridge... The paper will burn right along with the powder. I noticed my revolvers perform much better with paper cartridges than loose powder.

    I've had trouble with DIY Caps and Paper Coffee Filters (Nitrated of course ) , it's still hard to find commercial caps in my area . Pyrodex P especialy causes me Grief. I always have to settle for # 11 and Crimp them,but both my Revolvers want #10 Caps.

    I did an experiment and fired 18 paper cartridges in a row in my .44 Pietta without any problems (3 cylinders). On the next cylinder full I had one chamber that refused to go off. After busting 3 caps I checked it out to find the chamber full of paper, especially at the bottom covering the nipple. I had to remove the nipple and punch the residue paper out. All the chambers contained paper from the cartridges (The cartridges were made from cigarette papers ). It's a good idea to check the chambers after each 6 rounds. I'm going to try nitrating the paper in the future to see how it works. One thing is for sure though, Mr. Winegar's paper cartridge maker is one of the best out there.

    Cigarette paper isn't the best to use, not least as it's been chemically-treated to burn at the same rate as the tobacco its surounding. It's also difficult to work with. PLEASE don't nitrate paper - you need strong acids and an ice bath to do it safely, and the home-made stuff can spontaneously combust in storage. You're effectively making guncotten! Far simpler and safer to just soak the paper in a saturated solution of saltpetre (potassium nitrate). It'll work just as well. Dry it on a flat surface rather than hung up, so its of even strength throughout.

    There should be no problem at all, as the loading ports of the 1861 are much larger than the ones from the old model 1851.

    Anyone use flash paper? The kind used for magic tricks. I read they burn quickly and completely so no leftover paper afterwards.

  • @robertstallard7836

    @robertstallard7836

    It does work but it's not the easiest paper to work with. The stuff I used needed cellulose glue to make it stick together. The trick is to make your cartridge (whatever paper you use) in such a way that only one layer is up against the flash hole.

  • @BogeyTheBear

    @BogeyTheBear

    7 ай бұрын

    The stop bolt may be bent or broken. There's a 'tail' on the stop bolt that rubs against the hammer in order to move bolt down and free up the cylinder-- if that tail gets bent or snapped so it no longer touches the hammer, the cylinder cannot unlock.

    Does using paper create a lot more mess?

  • @GunsOfTheWest

    @GunsOfTheWest

    No. It sometimes leaves a little paper behind after a shot is fired, but not enough to cause problems, and it’s easily removed.

    Never tried it before because of two problems: Silver is a much harder metal than lead, and the melting point of silver is over twice as high as lead. An aluminum bullet mold is good enough for casting lead, but could get damaged by the heat of molten silver. A mold made of iron or stone would be needed to cast silver bullets.

    The priming compound on a cap goes all the way out to the inner corner of the cap. the nipple has a diameter and a hole in it's center. when the hammer strikes the cap the compound ignites and that compound that is closer to the outside edge of the nipple will blow out the front and outside of the nipple. A minority of the flames will go down the nipple to set off the main charge. this is not smokeless primers in a sealed case. It's one more reason why the self contained metallic case was a godsend for firearms in the 1860's. Cap and ball guns were far from a sealed system.
