Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausführung D German Medium Tank - More Needed

During the early development of the Panzer IV, nobody involved in the program knew that this vehicle, designed to serve as a support Panzer, would become the Wehrmacht’s backbone for a good deal of the war. While today the Tiger and Panther are better known, the Panzer IV was produced in the greatest numbers and served on all fronts in many bloody engagements throughout the war. In October 1939, the demands for an increasing number of support tanks would lead to the introduction of the Panzer IV Ausf. D version, of which over 200 would be built.

There is evidence that cutting the number of panzers in a division for Barbarosa was NOT because of a desire to double the number of panzer divisions, but rather the generals realized that the ratio of tanks to infantry in a division during the battle of France was too tank heavy.

that claim that those panzer IV lost in france where recovered an fixed, you have to know that Germans claimed losses only on vehicles beyond repair

Army Group Sud (South) used entirely German manufactured Tanks period. While Army Group Mitt and Nord used both German and Foreign, but mostly Czech.

The photo starting about 9:11 shows Auf D crew with black Panzerjacken, with sleevebands on both sleeves and light colored collar patches and shoulder board piping, Heer breast eagles. Looks like white Waffenfarbe so that would indicate Fuhrer Begleit Btl of Infantry Division ,,Grossdeutschland". My father in law was a Panzerfahrer in 2. Kp FBB, they wore black Panzerjacken with white piped collar patches with skulls, and shoulderboards, with Grossdeutschland sleeveband on left and Fuhrerhauptquartier sleeveband on right. Later in the War they used the same Feldgrau Panzerjacke as issued to the Sturmgeschutz crews, but with white piped collar tabs and shoulderboards.

Hitler's doubling of panzer divisions was in fact creating Panzer Grenadeer Divisions. This was a better use of combined arms doctrine & eased logistical issues.

We already gave Cone an important hint. The tank is whitewashed. The photo is taken somewhere in the late winter - early spring of 1942.

You know I believe if the world have just sloped the front armour and beefed up the gun mantlet more they really wouldn't have used any more iron and would have been way better off then retooling for the tiger

To be fair there are a lot of ways they could have gone that would have been more effective for them than the tigers 😆

It was the panther not the tiger that replaced the PzKwIV. The tiger was designed for a different task.

It is mentioned in this article. Only one vehicle was built and while a batch was ordered, it was cancelled in favor of the longer 75.

This tank is pretty sweet in World of Tanks. Or, well, it is on the upper end of the tanks it will face at its Tier.
