    Some 30+ years ago at service we had the big brass and a general inspecting the end of service war rehersals. One guy was about to fire the bazooka"s training rocket and as trained to do, checked his rear for any comrades in the back blast area. Well, there was someone standing RIGHT there in the middle of the back blast area, and because his helmet blocked his vision pretty much to the rear, he just shouted "GET THE FUUC OUT FROM THAT FKIN REAR DANGER AREA!!". As it happened to be, it was non other but the before mentioned general, casually just commenting "Excellent", and stepped away from the back blast area. Bazooka guy received one extra day of leave.

    That was a class A general. The guy made no jokes about an issue that is quite real, and showed he was up to the task. The general appreciated it. just like Patton in North-Afrika, when he came into some barracks and woke a guy sleeping. The guy cursed him: 'I'm trying to get some sleep here you know!' And Patton replied: you are the first one who actually knows what he is doing around here.

    The KV-1's frontal armor isn't much thicker than its side, both being about 70mm as-designed, though the front carries a slight angle. But your point still stands, any anti-tank soldier should be taught the very basic lesson of "front of tank is very strong"

    It's true that preferred way of attacking a tank as an AT soldier is to wait for it to go by and hit it in the side. But you very rarely get opportunities to do things exactly how you would prefer to do them according to the book. While you may prefer to hit the enemy tank in the side, if you have a clear shot at the front and you know your AT weapon is powerful enough to get through the tank's frontal armor (and the panzerfaust could penetrate the armor of any WW2 era tank from any angle), then you take that shot. Also, while it's true that infantry should generally be able to spot any armored vehicle long before it spots them, that will not be the case 100% of the time. It is not implausible for an SU-152 to catch German infantry by surprise every once in a while. While I can't speak to the accuracy of the movie as a whole, there is nothing particularly implausible or blatantly inaccurate in this scene. Except perhaps for the lack of Soviet infantry. The Soviets were notorious for sending their tanks forward without any infantry support in 1941 and 1942 (with predictable results). But I was under the impression that by 1944 they had gotten their shit sorted out.

  • @turunsaaristonpossuankkaaa1575
    @turunsaaristonpossuankkaaa15752 жыл бұрын

    To clarify things the scene takes place in 1944 in many places (yes these are swedish volunteers and finns fighting in the finnish front) in the finnish fronts the soviet infantry was stopped but the tanks rolled on because the finns did not have enough anti tank weapons that may be reason theres no infantry support. Furthermore the guy firing the panzerfaust is a swedish volunteer the finnish officer who yells at him gave them the instructions in finnish so the guy does not know about the back blast.

    An earlier scene makes clear that that soldier is a Swedish speaking Finn and when they were watching a demonstration of how to use a Panzerfaust, he didn't understand the Finnish instructions. That explains why he makes this mistae. ...Reality is that the Panzerfausts arrived just before a massive Soviet attack and the training that most people got was very brief. The German instructions had been removed but there was no time to print Finnish (or Swedish) instructions yet. A book on the battle mentions that one officer demonstrated the use of Panzerfaust and he fired while being prone... His pants were burnt off completely by the backblast and his ass wasn't looking good either.

    The ISU-152's 152mm. CPHE shell weighs 88 Pounds, though most of it is hardened steel with less than half the bulk being explosive. It still should have made a bigger blast though. It can penetrate up to 2 metres of reinforced concrete (German tests) and up to 124mm. of face hardened rolled homogeneous armour @ 0 degrees @ 100 metres. Compare that to a US 155mm. HE shell, which weighs 40 Pounds and is mostly explosive encased in a soft steel casing. It has minimal effect against reinforced concrete and penetrates 0mm. of armour.

    For anyone wondering about the rank insignia on the tanker (captain Mikkola), it became practice to ditch the colored collar boards on the front and pin the roses directly on the collar, usually following the earlier m/19 and m/22 pattern with the roses or lions being arranged in a triangle. NCOs usually used grey stripes on the shoulder straps, as their rank insignia used embroidered chevrons on the collar boards back then. Nowadays everyone uses brass pins, whether the two types of chevrons, two types of roses or the lions. And with velcro tags all officer rank insignia are in a column. m/91 BDUs used collar patches, so there they were in a row. On the lions, Mannerheim was the first to have an m/22 pattern with the lions in a row, because the crossed batons took up the vertical element of the embroidered rank collar.

    @@Doktozlo Чем там тебе пахло в 1940 я не знаю. Но в 1939 году Россия и Германия начали Вторую мировую войну с целью поделить Европу между двумя людоедскими режимами. Поработить всю Финнляндию русликам не удалось. Откусили только часть. Фото русликов шоковой заморозки есть в изобилии. Решили отложить захват этой страны на позже. Россия и Германия были союзниками во Второй Мировой, поэтому Германия не поставляла вооружения в Финнляндию. Но в 1941 году Россия раззинула варежку на проливы, и два союзника и братских режима вцепились друг другу в глотки. Вторая финнская война у России не вышла блицкригом, все говорило, что будет продолжаться и в 1945, а может и дольше. Вот в сентябре и заключили мир. Финны решили потерять часть территории и откупаться от людоедов колбасой Салями и сапожками, но сохранить независимость. А вот почему Россия захотела остановить войну? Ответ на поверхности. Через несколько месяцев заканчивалась война в Германии, и России нужно было усесться за стол Трибунала не со стороны своего союзника в первой половине войны, а состороны союзника (США) во второй ее половине. Иначе полезли бы ее преступления наружу и все бы увидели, что Россия - это куда более кровожадный людоед, чем Третий Рейх. А для этого нужно было перестать вести агрессивные войны. А война в Финнляндии была именно таковой. За развязывание войны против Финнляндии Россию и выгнали из Лиги Наций.

    Here is the reason why a tank should not be without infantry. Many people mistakenly think that a tank is needed to fight against a tank, but this is not true. The main goal of the tank is, together with the infantry, to find a gap in the defense, go through it into the enemy’s rear and deprive him of supplies by breaking communication lines (railroads, for example), then the enemy tanks will not receive fuel and provisions.

    It was a Finnish plan to let tanks thru the front line, stop the infantry and then destroy isolated tanks. Since most of that part of Finland was forest, that scene was not entirely inaccurate. Quite a many soviet tanks were destroyed or captured that way. Tanks seen in this movie are from Parola Armour Museum and were captured from soviet forces during WWII. KV1:s in the museums collection are not moving ones, so this is really a T54/T55 made to look like KV1. This battle is historical, so they wanted that tank to be KV1.
