Druillet is an exceptionally talented artist. Still I have been hesitant to really jump in. For some reason I have this preconception that his stories may be overtly out there, like hard-to-follow plots. And I say this not knowing as I only have Lone Sloane Delirius album in my shelf. It´s just that at one point I read too many stories where I couldnt decide if I was too stupid to get it or the story was intentionally hard/impossible to decipher. I have to hold on to what little is left of my frayed ends of self esteem.😅 Having said all that Mirages looks stunning. Just stunning. Looking at the art gave me "The Old Man" feeling where I want to rant how "back in the day" there use to be this raw talent from people who honed their technical skills 24/7. Doing the hard grind and reaching a level of quality that is a rare find these days. Of course that is not true. So many new talents and styles I like but there is something special about these certain artists that include more details in one panel than some books have in total. The level of effort alone makes you humble. I know not all care about that but for me it has always been mesmerizing. That effect when you stop reading the story because you can´t get your eyes off the panel to move them to the next one. And when you do the same happens again.

I agree with you on Babel. The computer generated colors did not do it for me. As for the story, I could not get through it. It was a slough. And…did Sloane just died to us at the end? For me the most fun stories to reed are the first two Sloane stories, the six voyages of loane sloane, and Delirius. Oh god, Delirius was the best story I red ever. It was so captivating and cool. It was also a story which you good to follow quite well. Therafter came Gail, I didnt understand what was going on, and Salambo…ohhh Salambo. I posted a comment on your video about Salambo. I was so mad at it. It felt like reading a bible and I could not get through the story. Delirius 2 was better, but also the story was lacking. Chaos I didnt understand either. Sloane was dead (how) then he was resurrected and he got that grey skin, slik hair and those lines around his face. What happend in the story? And this one, Babel, I didnt came through the story. Only the first two Sloane stories did it for me and they where awesome. I dont know why Druilliet went for that big, slough, difficult-to-understand story telling. I just dont know. I feel like he is a George Lucas. If you let him be you get the prequel triology, but if you keep him in check you get the best movies ever (star wars a new hope). Thats why Delirius was so good, Druilliet didnt do the story. What do you think?

well yes, about Babel's end .... SPOILERS you're unmistakebly right. I mean, he's dying melodramatically enough (including some mourning) that we can/should assume he's dead now. But again: because this story feels like some baroque superhero-tale the possibilities for ressurection should be limitless. And quite frankly: I don't care too much... and I won't care in the future as long as this creative team tries to continue without a severe change of their approach. as to the Druillet stories before: well, I don't want to pretend to have really understood everything or just the gist of the stuff... but I was fine with it: these are alien worlds, very out there, very poetic... so it's sometimes like a poem or music: I get the theme, the emotion, the general direction in which all the plot is heading and I think I understand most of the time the intentions behind some of the denser and inaccessible parts... but I agree: it could drive one mad if he tries to understand everything and goes deep into the bottom of each rabbithole that Druillet has prepared for us.

Is Mirages a new release? I recognize the title, but didn't think it belonged to such a thick book. It looks great. The early Sloane stories remind me of Barbarella. I like the uncoated paper; I wonder if Titan might be doing a version-in English-but I can't imagine them straying from the thin, glossy stuff. As far as Babel, I didn't realize that Druillet was licensing his creative properties; it's good to get a glimpse of what that book is about. The B&W version does look interesting. Thanks for sharing! The last one I picked up was Chaos, the Heavy Metal version, which I liked despite how kind of weird and stiff it was. Still, I didn't pursue Delirius 2.

Mirages seems to be a new edition from 2020, but I figure it‘s a re-collection of an older collection/collections… kind of. Yes, Barbarella is a good comparison for many reasons but also in terms of the naivety, the charme of the drawings and maybe even the duotone-coloring. And yes, Titan should use better paper & esp. with the sketchy early material the loss would be significant … but tbh I don‘t see such an edition coming in English … maybe a part of the book (for an example: Lone Sloane 66 … or if Babel turns out to be a success: maybe a book with Druillets collaborations). As to Babel: yeah, I would be very interested about the opinions of other Druillet-heads out there!?

At first I skipped past this video, because I was not interested in Babel and I thought I already had Mirages. But the Mirages I have is a thin oversize comic put out by Humanoids that collected only some of the humor stories plus one or two of the sci-fi pieces. Cite Sans Nom was Druillet's secret first appearance in the US, exerpted on the fan page of Creepy or Eerie. The new Mirages seems to gather all or most of every uncollected comic that Druillet's name was on. I've been trying to find an affordable edition of that first Lone Sloane for years, it originally appeared in 1966 as part of a wave of new adult comics that was started by (as has been suggested) Barbarella, and even employs the same use of single colors that Forest employed. Many of the Lovecraft illustrations appeared in Démons et Merveilles, a limited edition of Lovecraft from 1976. Some of the images were reused for later French paperbacks. I was sad when I learned about Babel because I thought that there would be no further Druillet books out there for me, but this is a wonderful find, a virtual treasure trove. Thanks for making my day.

there's not actually too much in it... I guess... can't really tell... after two minutes of the interview my feet slept & I stopped that video before the rest of my body followed. the usual vain artist talk. you can almost hear from the tone of his voice that he tries to add enough weight to his "musings" so that we can feel his importance... I'm not harsh, I still like Herrn Rauch... but I'm German, what can I do, we're harsh by nature :)

@@earlgrey862 Ah, too bad. I only know of him through your video about Heshka. Another reason for me to prefer comic art over "fine" art. I've never met a pretentious comic artist, just a few weird ones, which is not a bad thing.

My dear friend what would it take to request a deep dive into the amazing comics by French Artist, MAX CABANES? I recently ordered the re-telling Graphic Novels of the original novels by famous French writer, Manchette. The comics are NADA and FATALE and they were scripted by Manchette's son. I challenge you to find two other beautiful books that can stand up to the visual quality of Cabanes art in these two books. Do you accept my challenge?🎲😅🤣😂😂😂

it's funny, I've read some bits and pieces by Cabanes recently while flipping through some european comic magazines... but I can't promise you anything aside of making one video after the other when I find time :)

Now this is an artist I could never get into. Sad really since he did seem to have some interesting ideas and concepts, but the art is just not for me. I much more prefer a Bilal or Moebius to a Druillet. Hell, I'm certain I'd take Bernet's Sarvan to anything by Druillet, which is weird, but I guess something about his art just puts me off.
