You guys in the UK always get the BEST releases. Here in the US all we have is the Criterion DVD which is OOP and selling for ridiculous prices. But hey, we have plenty of super hero movies on 4K! 🤪

Like you, Elliot, I’ve been waiting for a blu of this for a long time, and when I saw Eureka/MoC were doing it I was over the moon! This and Freaks have made my year! There are still lots of other Silents I’d like to see that aren’t on dvd, never mind blu.

Excellent review! I'm in the USA and I purchased a region free player just so I could access physical media from the UK.

Not seen this film. Most of the 'still watched today' silent films tend to have an artistic side to them (I wouldn't say arthouse, but I think you all know what I mean). I recommend 'Wings' from 1927 and 'The Thief Of Bagdad' from 1924 as two silent films which are full-on Hollywood entertainment. These are also good places to start for anyone who thinks that silent films are boring. I will pick up the standard edition of this one when it is released.

I have also been hoping for this film to come to Blu Ray! I'm thinking that Grindhouse Video or Diabolik DVD probably have it available imported to the U.S.

My copy arrived last week (Australia) and I've watched it all. Wonderful, wonderful movie with the stupendous Louise Brooks. I'll still keep my old Eureka/ Madman DVD but Blu-ray is a definite improvement.

Great news; I've been waiting for this! And now I hope someone (Criterion?) will pick this up. The old Criterion DVD is OOP..

I got to revisit this as when I watched it at the BFI Southbank. I was not a fan of it. But second time may turn that around with Eureka.

I have it. The video qualty is not pristine, but excellent (with some exceptions) considering it's age. I find it hard to believe that it is possible to improve it any further.

Scanning technology improves all the time, so it's certainly possible, but that said, much depends on the state of the original materials. The limiting point will probably be how much it might cost to restore using every single tool available (including AI, which it has to be said has performed a miracle on the 'new' Beatles single; John Lennon's demos being very rough as can be heard on those songs issued in the 90s where his vocal sounds like a ghost out of the past. The new one is in a different league sound wise) as opposed to how many people would buy the result. That might be why this is a 2K restoration only. The surviving elements might not allow better with today's technology. However that might be, it's wonderful to finally have this film on blu-ray.

Yes, and most of Eureka's blu ray releases are Region B only as well.

One of my holy grails as well. Let me guess...it's region locked.

Thanks so much for introducing me to this film. I don't think that I heard about it till now. Appreciated. One small note: every time you use the term "sex worker" it only serves to normalize being a whore. Call them whores.

Can't agree upon this. In my ears, the word whore sounds extremely disdainful. For a vast majority, prostitution is not an active choice of career, many of them being victims of sex trafficing. Still humans and deserves being treated as such, i.e. with respect. But that's just my humble opinion...
