what shelves do you use for your blu-ray’s?
I love The Holdovers but the shot-on-video mimicry of a 1970s 35mm film could have been better. It’s fine, but why not just shoot it on 35mm? Compared to the overall production cost, it would not have added much to budget. The low budget indie film, The Love Witch was shot on actual 35mm film and looks way more authentic.
Thank you for giving me a Keith Carradine movie I haven't heard of!
Great list Elliot. My favorite Lynch film as well. I will search for this and try and get it to the US. Thanks!
Just picked up that Holdovers 4k. Glad to hear I did the right thing!
Excellent video, as always. Question: I saw another release of Paths to Glory in 4K from another label. Have you done any comparisons to the one featured in this video?
All great movies i blind bought The wages of fear BFI 4k based on your recommendation….its great. I’d ad the A24 4k release of Zone of interest, fantastic movie.
The Wages of Fear sounds like "The Sorcerer" which is same story set in South America.
Hey Elliot, You should retitle top 10 4k catalog title 2024 so far 🤔
@@808physicalmedia9 why?
@@ElliotCoen Because you have no current 2024 4k uhd new releases? Just old catalog 4k uhd movies & it's misleading in my opinion 🎥 lol 🍿
@@808physicalmedia9 literally the first film I talk about is Dune pt. 2 - a film released in 2024. I think you’ve just misread the video title rather than it being misleading, as no one else has mentioned it. Clearly I’m talking about 4Ks released in 2024 and not just films first distributed in 2024. So, no retitling required but thank you 😎
I couldn't understand the fuss over Mean Streets.. i am still waiting for Kubricks "Eyes wide Shut"unrated 4k was announced back in 2022!!!? it was rumoured for the 20th anniversary? yet nothing..BS😢 "Southern Comfort" !! absolutely amazing, very enjoyable film and easily best release of 2024.
So glad we got The Holdovers on 4K here. It’s a wonderful film and the 4K disc really does manage to take you back to the 70s. As for my 4K film of the year it’s Lone Star by far. I’d only heard the name John Sayles but I’d never even heard of this film. I don’t know what it was but I just took a punt on Lone Star and I loved it so much that I’m desperate to get more from Mr Sayles. Unfortunately, his work is so poorly represented on Blu-ray here but at least we got the fantastic Matewan on 2K. Looking to the rest of the year, I’m really looking forward to the 4K disc of Double Indemnity from Criterion the most. Like you, I think black and white classic films really do benefit from the 4K format when done well.
Hi, I am looking for a good 4k Player , do you have a recommandation ?
I’m a bad person to ask this! I haven’t bought a player in years and I’m still using my Oppo UDP 203 which is amazing for what I need. Sadly Oppo don’t make players anymore, so I don’t know what I’ll buy when it breaks down. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
The Crow!
The Holdovers is depressing.
@@tgrujic1965 I won’t deny, but cathartically so. You should see my list of my favourite movies of all time if you want to see depressing!
Highly recommend the new 4k from Shout Studios for Robocop 2. Genuinely blew me away visually. No idea how they got the film to look so incredible. I can only imagine that they shot the film on high quality fine grain film stock because of the amount of effects shots and compositing that they were going to be doing. It looks just stunning. One of the best restorations I have ever seen.
Ordered it along with blown away 4k. Never seen both. Can’t wait.
amazing transfer visually....to my surprise i enjoyed the Laser Disk audio transfer. I got a Atmos theater set up, yet 2 channel Laser disk audio remaster kicks butt.
Mean Streets limited edition isn't sold out and its July now, I imagine too expensive for most folks when they can get the standard releases.
Price certainly is a factor these days but I’d also bet this particular release had a high print run from Second Sight due to the popularity of the film and filmmaker. I’m very glad they offer the standard 4Ks at the same time to give people more options.
The Ealing film is the best of the bunch. You sir are a connoisseur of film art.
Thank you! You have good taste too
I’m still ticked off that we didn’t get The Holdovers in 4k in the US.
Pretty much every 4K is region free I believe…unless it’s a shipping issue I don’t get you
@@bicmacman55 Generally the bonus features are on a region locked Blu. Get me? Edit: yes, I did eventually find out that the bonus features for this release are included in the 4k itself, which helps, but most reviewers fail to discuss that aspect of the release, so I end up having to wait until I know someone who bought it.
In the case of The Holdovers, the few extra features are all on the 4K disc itself, making it a safe disc to import for collectors who aren’t region free. That said, I agree, lots of 4K releases won’t put the special features on the 4K disc.
@@ElliotCoenI think you removed my post about that. Just not enough reviewers who discuss where the bonus features are located, so sometimes it takes me months to find out and order something. Still doesn’t negate the frustration that the title didn’t get a domestic US release. There’s no reason not to.
I feel your despair - there are SO many US releases that I have to import. So, count your blessings, but I know that “Dammit!” feeling.
I was gonna take a nap, but this changes everything!
13:19 But the Imprint rekease from 2021 was from a restored 4K master?
Unfortunately not. I know it was advertised as such but it’s a miscommunication on Imprint’s part. It was the same old dated looking master. The only 4K restoration of The Straight Story was finished in 2023, overseen by Lynch - see here for more info (notes at bottom of page) - festival.ilcinemaritrovato.it/en/film/the-straight-story/
@@ElliotCoen Their website still states it is from a 4K master... Oh dear.
I thought Lone Star was a bit too dark, but very good transfer.
I didn’t notice any overly dark sections but I’ll have another check. It could be differences in our TV panel settings. Cheers!
I thought the transfer looked great (but I also watched it on an oled where everything including Heat and Inglorious Basterds looks great). I feel like I'm the only person in the world though who doesn't think the story is good and didn't enjoy the movie because of it.
@@ElliotCoen It was actually The Holdovers transfer that I found to be very very dim
I was wondering, what are you thoughts about the new old boy and memories of murder. They are two of my favourite Korean movies and I have been thinking of getting those with the new 4K out
I get asked a lot about my blu-ray shelves. Here's a video all about them and where to get them ---> kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYlnk5OKe5TJls4.html
I was collecting vinyl recently and was spending like crazy then one day I said why am I doing this? With the amount of money I’m spending I could afford a holiday. However I do still collect steelbooks and even have some designed by a steelbook creator if I can’t find ones available. I’ve only had one tiny scratch that was like a dot and I filled that in with a black marker pen and you can’t tell the difference. I will keep on collecting steelbooks but not vinyl.
besides from bonus features, some ppl dont want all that crisp visual, and prefer a bit grainy old esthetic of classic films. it just has different magic to it
@@ashmaterial a good 4K disc retains all film grain from the original film source (usually the original camera negative) - theoretically getting those films to look as close to how they look when they originally came out
Wait, I’m new to all of this but do Barnes and Noble ship to the UK?!?
@@mrbrit6746 hey, they don’t unfortunately. You have to either use a reshipping service or have US based friends or family help you out
@@ElliotCoen Ahh okay - is HMV our best bet for UK movie collectors then? I seem to always miss their sales, or I’ve never noticed any boutique sales 😓
Favourite Criterion Noir... Detour - Ulmer In a Lonely Place - Ray Killing - Kubrick Kiss Me Deadly (top pick) - Aldrich Night and the City - Dassin Pickup on South Street - Fuller Rififi - Dassin Sweet Smell of Success - MacKendrick Touchez pas au Grisbi - Becker
No. This is a bad argument for several reasons. The only salient point is that you bought a copy and they're screwing your rights because the technology allows them to. 1. Amazon is making a representation that the information is being purchased, and are reneging on their obligation to the purchaser in fact, even if there's a bunch of obtuse legal text the purchaser isn't reading. 2. If you buy a book, you own the physical book and any contents within. That's how it works, because that's how physical property is distributed. It doesn't change when the fixed medium is a disc and requires a tool to read. 3. Owning the right to create copies of a thing (copyright), does not mean they own the thing. Further, I'd argue these types of arrangements should be prohibited by law. The natural way of things is for people to own what they buy. Arguing otherwise is doing mental gymnastics on behalf of some corpo who wants more control than they should be permitted by any reasonable protection under property law. It interferes with the property rights of consumers, and no normal person likes it this way, so MAKE THESE TYPES OF CONTRACTS AGAINST THE LAW. 4. (Just an aside) Blu-ray and dvd movies use compression, it's just higher-quality.
I really hope The Long Good Friday release is available in the UK because if it isn’t….
The only problem with Criterion Blu-rays is that most of them are Region A locked, which is the case with Barry Lyndon. They have started to release a Region B range and I have the nucleus of a nice collection. The Region A lock is a pain though.
Brilliant choices, some I’ve not heard of. I would include in any list of Noir both The Third Man and Murder, My Sweet. The latter is based of Chandler’s novel Farewell, My Lovely and has Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe.
Hmmm, not one of these is a movie that, if I were Japanese, would make me want to go to a theater. Not good for the culture.
Should we run all movies by you to check that they’re good for culture?
My release of One Cut of the Dead is from Third Window! Knew I'd heard the name somewhere, haha. I know what you mean by the stagnant nature of collecting. That's why I watch channels like yours, for the recommendations! I discovered Eureka the other day. I'd heard of them, but I was operating under the misapprehension that UK releases weren't quite as comprehensive as US ones. Boy, was I wrong! And now I have Eureka's entire catalogue to work my way through, it's an absolute goldmine!
Would love to know where this HMV is. Mine closed years ago, this one looks awesome.
@@mkennedy9822 it’s Stockport - sorry to hear your local one closed
That shirt! I need to get one
I only collect Japanese cinema on boutique blu-ray labels so this was a good video to see!
Thanks for watching!
Third Window is great, Memories of Matsuko was also one of the earliest non-English films I remember buying! the Third Window podcast is pretty interesting too, they talk about the films but also how the communication and licensing with Japanese directors/studios happens. Haven't seen any Shinji Somai but there's a few screenings coming up near me that I think I'll go to
I have never heard about this label and I love Japanese cinema!! Thank you 😮😊 Ordered The Crazy Family, heard a lot of good things about it 😊
I also recommend the Japanese hidden gem The Face of Another (1966) by Hiroshi Teshigahara.
Great film!
I love a lot of the films that Third Window is putting out, but regrettably, I have to say that their encoding skills leave a lot to be desired - I think every single one of their releases that I've seen has had a lot of macroblocking, banding, etc. It's just so unfortunate because they are often the only way to see some of these films in decent quality.
Nice deconstruction of the new label, looking forward to picking several of these up!
Thanks for watching, Sam!
Love Hotel sounds very interesting, I might have to add this to my watchlist. Standard blue cases though, I find blue cases to be quite brittle.
I started this video thinking these films wouldn’t be for me or at least wouldn’t be the type I’d buy. But each of your descriptions interested me greatly 😅
Simply, Criterion is kinda full of themselves...they think they are above needing to do anything special for the 4k releases "because they're Criterion"...meanwhile, there is no urgency to buy anything from them because there is nothing different or special about the releases and they will be readily available 6months, 1yr 2yrs etc from now
Are you doing a video on the October criterion announcements?
I won't have time now but the announcements have me excited!
Great timing. I’m going to Tokyo this year. I’m hoping to get some physical media there. Wondering if their Blu-rays and UHD discs have English subtitles
Have a great time when you go to Tokyo!
nope. pretty much none of it. different market structure, no sale or return, small prints, very insular. heavy emphasis on rental possibly. international releases of j films rare + now often contractually limited due to desire to avoid grey imports at lower costs than their domestic releases.
Thank you for making this video. I’m in the U.S so I had no idea about these but just went on the U.K arrow site and ordered them all!
And for your Yankee fans... It would be helpful if you could mention if it was region locked or not. Recently purchased the 4k version of Typhoon Club, and I am looking forward to watching it soon. I hope that the others aslo get 4k treatments.
Some Third Window releases are region A compatible, but definitely not all. So be careful. Of these I’m not sure, except Typhoon Club, which worked on my region A player
Japan is my favourite country for film but my local hmv never have many third window films so not quite sure what to get, so i'll keep a look out for these because these sound amazing and I need to check these out
Elliot, what is your fav Takeshi Kitano film? Or top 3? Nobody really talks about him, yet we both share a love of his movies.
@@slave_to_cinema I think Hana-Bi will always be my favourite but I have love for many others. A Scene at the Sea is one that needs to be seen more! Sonatine is a classic too.
