Pandit Santosh Banerjee | Surbahar | Raga Darbari Kanada
Born on 24th November 1931, Pt. Santosh Banerjee is a master player of the sitar and surbahar. Initially trained by Sri Aparesh Chatterjee, he later became disciple of the legendary Beenkar and torchbearer of the Rampur Senia Gharana, Ustad Mohammed Dabir Khan, who had made Kolkata his home. His association with Ustad Dabir Khan Saheb continued for nearly 25 years till the demise of the Ustad. From the Ustad, Pt. Santosh Banerjee learnt Dhrupad-Dhamar, typical `Dhrupadi Baaz` on Sitar and also the regal, almost extinct instrument, `Surbahar`. Today he is one of the few artistes who sincerely performs the traditional `baaz` (style of playing) on Surbahar.
Emotion and romanticism perfectly blended into the traditional purity of Khandar Vani along with tuneful alap, vistar and variation in the rhythmic pattern are the outstanding features of his performance.
Pandit Santosh Banerjee is former Head of the Department of Instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University. He has conducted innumerable lecture-demonstrations and seminars in Universities in India and abroad and has participated in many prestigious music festivals all over India.
Prof. Banerjee's wife Smt Chhabi Banerjee is an illustrious vocalist of the Sahaswan Gharana. His only daughter and disciple, Smt. Sahana Banerjee, is one of the most accomplished and outstanding female sitar players of India.

Absolutely mesmerizing
So nice.
This is great music. A true musician who loves music and doesn't show off. I am very happy that I now know the music of Santosh Banerjee. (Maybe this is a silly question, but is he family of Nikhil Banerjee, the great sitar player?). Thank you for posting this tender awe inspiring music.

+Hirak Sarkar Thank you for answering my question. I wondered because Santosh Banerjee and Nikhil Banerjee both have a style of playing Indian classical music that I love very much. Thank you.

I think the name Banerjee is very popular in parts of India....sort of like the names Smith or Brown are, here in the west.

Pandit Santosh Banerjee was a very good friend of Pandit Nikhil Banerjee (NB). In a video interview, SB once quoted NB as saying, "I can perform, but not teach! You are a true teacher". NB used to send his own students to SB for training.

While they are not related and belonged to different gharanas of music, we can certainly understand why you love both the styles equally. Pt. Santosh Banerjee plays Dhrupad on Surbahar in Khandahar Vani, and Pt Nikhil Banerjee belonged to Maihar Senia gharana, which was heavily influenced by Dhrupad. Naturally both the artists try to evoke a feeling a Been-baaj in their respective instruments.
