Panasonic Lumix S9
Stylish, High-Performing, and Travel-Friendly
Packing the power of full-frame into an ultralight and compact build, the Panasonic Lumix S9 Mirrorless Camera is the perfect on-the-go camera for content creators. While smartphones continue to advance in their photo and video capabilities, a uniquely small full-frame system such as the S9 provides you with significantly more power without the burden of the size of a typical mirrorless or DSLR camera. A 24.2MP full-frame sensor is utilized within the S9, which makes creating high-quality images much easier, even in dimly lit situations. You also have the advantage of choosing from numerous L-mount lenses to suite your needs. Overall, the simplicity and convenience of the S9 makes it an excellent tool for elevating your ability to quickly create and share impactful images.

As a filmmaker of narrative work, the supposed limitations other content creators have talked about are not issues with me. First, when I get a new camera, I shoot video and audio tests. I especially do audio tests to see what "db" settings are best with the camera's internal amps, when using a microphone plugged into the camera. When needed, I use mostly audio field recorders for narrative projects, which allow me to monitor the audio. Again, I don't need a headphone jack on the camera. The audio tests I do when I get a new camera settle any gain setting needs. The 10-15 minute recording limitations of the S9 are not an issue for me. Most of my narrative work involves shots from 5 to (maybe) 20 seconds in length. So, no the recording limits are NOT a huge downside, and I think are overblown for my use case. Plus, like you said, they can probably change that with a firmware update. The cold hot shoe on the S9 is not an issue for me either. Because I rarely shoot photos. I certainly don't use flash when I do. So, no, another so-called "issue" is not an issue for me. In the end, the S9 is probably not a good choice for photographers in general. But, for me, it's a very good choice. As a filmmaker, being able to run in gun without drawing attention to myself is a huge plus. And the S9's small form factor works in my favor. I can see how the S9 is not for everyone. Seeing the launch of the S9 and the features I know it has, is all I need to know to make a choice. But, just because the S9 is not for everyone doesn't mean it's a bad camera or crippled. Thanks for sharing your views. You made some excellent points.

I'd actually say it is a good choice for photographers.. lol. I mean you just said it.. small, compact form factor, run n' gun.. There are some AMAZING things being done PHOTO wise on the S9 out there, no EVF.. And the same can be said for the FX3, no EVF.. And the Sigma FP, no EVF. And the Ricoh GR, no EVF. So..... I'd actually say the S9 is going to be MAJOR for photo shooters, and VIDEO shooters. Both. S9 is gonna do numbers !

This is the only video I have found that actually feels likes it is an honest take. My friend and I both said it’s far too expensive for who they’re pretending it’s for. I think the camera would actually sell if it was priced at 750 bucks but at the starting price of 1500 bucks the perceived value drops significantly because now you’re into a tier of user that can get much better use out of things that are already on the market cheaper.

Liked your POV and examples. Not that I'm any x-pert, but if you're a noob content creator my advice is: start. Don't get the camera first and then figure out what to do. You can do a great job with a RX100, or a Lumix G7 or other cheap MFT camera, or an iphone. Or worse! Markuspix famously makes all his videos on 1 inch pocket cameras. And then you can decide what kind of great full frame camera you need, if you need it...

For the point of Content creators that use their phone for editing, what about the 5Ghz connection to your phone so you can use your Open gate videos on your phone? Because of the ability to transfer your videos to your phone to edit, this would be a great pairing to increase the quality of the videos as well as the quality of life that Open gate offers. I shoot a lot 1080 100p for slowing down pans and movement. Im also just shooting 8 bit, as I don't want big files, everything goes up on to Google Photos for clients to share. I used be Nikon but wanted to utilise good AF and Sony has delivered there. Ive considered buying a gimbal, but just cant be bothered lugging one around. I could still use it with continuous light personally, but i went to college and got my 2nd degree in photography, so im aware of how to do that, but i realize most people do not. Anyone into serious video should alreeady have a video recorder like atomos which would get them around the record limits in an emergency. Im confused. If i heard everything right, I actually think its for the content creator you mentioned it isnʻt for. I think one of the disconnects is when you mentioned "marginally better." I think it really depends on how quick youʻll be able to get the images/videos on to your phone. This is the convenience. In regards to this camera being for people that do talking head videos, you still have the pain points of what your gf would have to go through: transfer the files, work with 6k open gate, and color correction. And then you have the recording limits. I do believe that theyʻll remove that recording limit. Even in this instance there will be confusion because we havenʻt laid down the definition of these terms. The main problem is this: because this camera is SO NICHE, it gets lost in all the conversations because it doesnʻt fit any of the general groups that are talked about. Now Iʻll tell you why Iʻm thinking about pre ordering it: I need something that can transfer quickly over to my phone, have better quality images/video than my phone, have it graded, and be able to post those in a timely manner without having to edit them on the computer. I also want THE OPTION to create vertical videos if needed. I also want to be able to do short form talking head shots for clients. With this said, this isnʻt under the description of "videographer, content creator or travel." This is why its causing a ruckus within the video community. Aye man sorry for the long input, this is the only time iʻve replied to the plethora of videos out about this s9. Appreciate your input brotha!

ugh, same.... I wish all these reviews remembered that most people are not youtubers. I just want a visibly better result than what a phone provides in the most convenient package and way to post it to my 20 followers on Instagram/keep on my phone to look back at memories. Not one review I've watched left me answered if that is a good camera for that or not. I'm looking at this camera because it has full sensor for best quality but in a tiny body. That's a very attractive option for me, and I have an actual 9-5 job, so I will never learn to edit my footage or images in Lightroom/Premiere Pro - that is such a pain in the ass for anyone who is not trying to be a professional content creator. I actually make money from my photography as a hobby, and not once used flash for a single picture. These youtubers keep saying this camera is not for photography because there's no flash, but not everyone needs flash? I'm left feeling confused by the KZreadrs, not by the camera, which is the biggest irony of it all.

I just keep thinking for all the dissing, no one will be able to shoot a better out of camera video than on this camera! I feel like people are going to eat their words on this one. A bit like they did on the x100 when they used to all say it was crap because “who would want a fixed lens camera for that money”.. I don’t hear them say that anymore! Ultimately, it will get discounted as all Panasonic stuff does. So I think that will soften the stance on this. But, I find it strange that videographers used to put up with so many compromises in the past just to get the best images. Whether it’s canons r5 overheating or Sonys colours being trash back in the day. You now have for under 1500 a camera that can produce the best stabilised 6k colour graded open gate footage out the gate and their moaning about an evf they wouldn’t even use anyway! I just think people are salty and lost their minds a bit. Look at what it can do, not what it can’t do. And I don’t see anything on the market that touches it as a quality hybrid. It’s like a little studio in box. Like fujis in camera raw converter on steroids.

it is funny that you mention the convenience (creating on the phone) when that exact point is the one that they tried to address with the S9 (successfully? Not sure). We will have to see the IQ of the MP4lite and how the app works in reality. My sis is also a content creator, she uses the phone and an A1. She has a specific look, so if she would have that on a LUT she could up the Q with little added work... Maybe.

For what it is (a step up from phone video and stills) the S9 is a lot more than I would have expected in a body this size, particularly for short form video. Open gate in a pocketable camera? There’s no Sony for that. Excellent IBIS, decent autofocus, a camera app which apparently works quickly plus an extensive LUT/Look infrastructure never seen before in any camera system. And a lot of that will trickle up to the S5II. Would I sell a Sony FX camera to buy this? No way. But as a lightweight add on to my existing kit? Why not? It doesn’t take much effort to plan social media takes which will fit within the record limits. Plus the S9 will make a great semi pocketable for vacation and travel. It won’t be replacing my Z9 or Blackmagic cine equipment for mission critical paid work, but there’s all kinds of family and side projects where FHD is plenty and then that opens up the super zoom function especially on vacation. In the end, it’s a hell of an effort by Panasonic to cram as much functionality in there as they did, and let’s not lose sight of the fact they can always roll out an S7 one of these days and that might be the full range finder camera others are craving. Time will tell.

  • @sdhute
    @sdhuteАй бұрын

Biggest con is there is not a fan which limits the record limit. Also the lack of smaller lenses. This camera is straight from camera to platform. No editing no color grading(internal lut). Straight from camera to platform just like the iPhone you’re comparing it to. Even your audio should be in cam. It’s an all internal to platform camera. My other Lumix cams do great with audio from the mic jack. You’ll need to change your workflow and use it just like a iPhone.

  • @MaximoJoshua

zv-e1 doesnt have a fan, can record an hour, if not more. This is a software limit, not a thermal limit, there is literally a countdown timer from when you hit record. The camera is also NOT straight to platform, first you have to transfer the files to your phone...they even created a new format called mp4lite or something, to make that easier, as transferring 6k open gate would be a big file size, so this one is like 3.8k or something. You of course can still grade externally if you want to. If I were to use it like an iphone, why wouldn't i just use the iphone?

Open gate is the most overrated rated feature ever. The use case isn’t even big enough to warrant spending 1500 on this gimped camera. If that feature is that important to you I’d hazard a bet that you’d be more open to purchasing a higher quality camera for not much more

@@Fredo.heavyy I would, purely from a video creator perspective. But I don’t do short format content. I do documentary style filming. Even then I can’t see when open gate is beneficial for my use case either. If I was running a social media business the main thing I’d want to improve first and foremost is the audio quality which isn’t easily possible with the S9. Buying an external monitor to compensate for another of the cameras huge weakness completely defeats the purpose of this camera. It’s so expensive for what it is I just don’t understand how anyone could honestly consider it. The price coming down to the $800 mark would make it more sensible. Open gate with record limits isn’t worth 1500.

And like your girlfriend, I’ve worked at multiple creative and marketing companies and they only used smartphones or serious cinema cameras for any video work. A client will 100% roll their eyes at your coloured S9 which doesn’t have a good cage, external monitor, microphone and maybe a gimbal. An iPhone will be looked down on less than a coloured camera body or a full white canon for example.

Sorry man, this s9 is trash . It's not for videography, due to the limit. It's not for photography because it doesn't have a hot shoe or EVF . This is a cash grab. Get a used S5 ii , A7c , A7 IV , R6. I don't get why KZreadrs feel they need full frame . I've literally taken photos and videos with my a7 IV and Fuji X-H2s and no one could tell the difference. Giving this camera a pass because it's full frame is crazy to me. My Fuji X-H2s and even my X-S20 can do 6.2k open gate. They have excellent image quality. KZreadrs have pushed the full frame narrative for so long, people feel like they need it in order to create. Like you said your girl uses a phone and makes money. Movies both now and back in the day used smaller sensors than full frame and the love and cult following some movies have show you we do too much for KZread. If the content wasn't there no one would care at all.

Used to think the same but now I’m pretty-ordering several. The use case is to multi-cam into a HDMI switcher using PZT mount. No LUMIX box camera has PDAF yet. S9 has no recording limitations “external HDMI”. Can even use the cables originally used for S5 OG that was also micro HDMI. AF all remote control by one person. The size/weight will help the PZT mount work great.
