Panasonic GX1 in 2023

This one came as a total surprise, to me. Though I know some hardcore fans of the GX1, those who say it is still the best camera for street photography, I never thought I would own one. But, here we are...

    Gotta say man I was looking to just click on a video and get some quick info on a camera and when i saw your runtime I thought "ugh this guy is just going to drag all this out I just want the specs" but I was pleasantly surprised with your style. Honest review, no forced pace, not selling anything, just honest small talk about your experiences. Thanks for the advice.

    Great video, I bought my 20/1,7 with my GF1 in 2009. Skipped the GX1 and bought GX7, GX8, E-P1 and E-P3. Love them all!

    I have GX1 and I only use it for RAW photo taking as well. The only major con for this camera is lack of built-in viewfinder. Photo quality is surprisingly good assuming not "smelling" the photos. The photo quality has further up when putting 42.5mm f1.7 lens on it.

    Your comments on the GX1 in the video really moved me, because you expressed the thoughts that have been in my heart for many years. From the day I first bought this camera, I have greatly enjoyed its performance, whether it's the feel, the image quality, or the responsiveness, and I even love the sound of the shutter. Five years later, fearing that it might break down and I wouldn't be able to find a replacement, I bought a brand new identical model. To this day, they remain my most beloved cameras to take out and shoot with. Of course, I've also accumulated more lenses over time, but the 14mm 2.5 lens is still the one I use the most. And in order to recapture more of the feel of photography, I also bought a digital viewfinder. At first it was just to satisfy a nostalgic feeling, but I found that using the DVF for composing shots is ultimately the best method for me, and it's also more power-efficient - I hardly use the rear LCD screen anymore. I believe I will continue using this camera until it can no longer take pictures. Thank you for your video.

    Had the same “oh wow” experience. Bought mine without watching/reading any reviews, so no expectations. Bought it just because it is super cheap and I wanted a pocket camera for my weekend bike rides. After taking a few shots of my daughter, got really blowned away by the quality and color renders of the photos. It’s been a while since the last time I felt that way with a camera.

    I have GX1 and a few other Panasonic cameras. This video convinced me to take it on a trip as a “pocket” camera. My lenses are a bit bigger (17/1.7 and 25/1.4). I only switched because the burst speed was not fast enough for sports to capture my son’s games, but in a more casual setting, this would be good as a backup body and casual pocket camera. I’m definitely going to pack the GX1 with my GH6. I wish I had the 20/1.7, a small prime would be great. In a sense I hate saying I wish I had something smaller, compared to full frame fast primes that are 3x the size, kind of crazy to even think that.

    I bought mine a few years back just for learning photography. Back then I paired it with an el cheapo 25mm f1.8 C-mount manual lens. I had zero expectations and it blew my mind. Also had a similar experience with the g7, g9, and gh5 where the images just felt "meh", absolutely no idea why. I still use it but usually with a 10mm f8 pancake lens.

    I agree so much on your opinion about Panasonic cameras, I own a G9, it’s a beast of a camera for the price but I can’t like the output it give to me… I always take my 5d or d700 and let the G9 on the shelf

    Well it came down to this GX1 or the LF1 because I wanted a pocket camera with a EVF. At least I can add one to the GX1. I ended up choosing the GX1 so I ordered one yesterday and after watching your video I think I made the right choice. I don`t shoot raw yet so I hope the jpgs turn out good too. Great review.

    I think Panasonic and Olympus for example made an extra effort with the GF-1 and EP-1/2 simply because it was the start of affordable digital cameras. Film was still affordable so camera manufacturers were working hard to lure photographers away from film to join the dark-side. Also think about the Canon 5D, Nikon D3, Nikon D700. All great, solidly built cameras that made big leaps in usability and specifications, not just insignificant upgrades from previous models because there were no previous iterations. P.S. I think there were reliability and build issues with the Olympus EP-5 which was a pity given it had all the features that were useful.

    If it is a Japanese version than it might not have an option to change language. Many Japanese-market cameras either have no language other than Japanese, or at best they have Japanese and a few other languages (between 1 and 3 other options).

    Got a GX1 body in new condition a couple of years ago for $120, had to pay another $120 for the 20/1.7 lens. Both are great, the 20/1.7 works well on my old Olympus Pen Mini 2 as well, another very underrated body. I would say the lens alone is worth the price, like the old Konica marketing lol. Next I may search out a used Lumix 14/2.5 but I get tired of the 28mm equivalent focal length, I prefer the 35-85mm range generally, or the 24mm or a little wider occasionally,.Even with a smartphone I zoom in often. Anyway, a long story but interesting and some good photos, thanks.

  • @SkylerKing

    I think our tastes in focal range may be identical. I never seek out 28mm and generally don't care for it. I prefer 35-85mm and if I need something wider, 24mm is typically perfect.

    Well I got an 11-18 ultra wide zoom for my old Sony DSLT and found it was generally too wide unless you specialize in those wider focal lengths. 24mm equivalent is OK but much wider and it gets much trickier to use.

  • @SkylerKing

    @SkylerKing

    Strange. I have a 16-28mm for full frame and it is almost permanently attached to at least one of my cameras. I have never found it to be "too wide" when I am specifically looking for wider angles.

    Every time I think about getting a secondary (retro) camera system (for fun), I just end up stopping myself with ideas like "what kind of glass I could get for my current camera instead of wasting money on something I don't really need" -or- "what new monitor I could get instead .. or a new PC" 😇 And somehow the new stuff always wins. An 8K monitor is on top of my list now. Not sure about its size though. 55"? 65"? more? ))

  • @SkylerKing

    @SkylerKing

    Жыл бұрын

    I guess I am just the total opposite, in that regard. I never feel the need or desire to upgrade things like my monitor, for example, as long as it is still functioning correctly. With lenses, I have owned too many that I ended up not using. I purchased a 70-200mm f2.8 and found myself very rarely using it. The few times I did use it, was because I felt guilty that it was collecting dust. That type of thing happened a lot. Over the years, I figured out that my favorite focal length is 35mm. I want, appreciate, and use a high quality 35mm lens with a fast aperture more than anything else. I also like an 85mm. I actually once went an entire year where an 85mm was my everyday lens, which I even did street photography with. Then, I want really something wide. I've learned from experience that an ultra-wide zoom is best for me. Once I had these lenses, I found myself not really wanting anything else. Not for the same camera system, anyway. I would love to get a Leica and try out some of their legendary 35mm primes, for example, but I've already got more lenses than I need for my Canon system, so I never find myself wanting any new ones. 🤷‍♂️

    @@SkylerKing I have never owned a 70-200F2.8. Never needed one. But I use my 150F2.8 APO Macro regularly, for everything, it's one of my favorites. Portraits, landscapes, close-ups, macro, astro, pets, wildlife, etc. .. does it all well. I stitch when I need wider, I crop when I need longer. But I've been looking at the new RF 70-200F4L lately. Very tempting :) Except that Tamron 70-180F2.8 is a lot cheaper, does half-size Macro and F2.8. Maybe I'll wait for the RF mount version then 😁. My personal rule - "buy one lens at a time". I've got the 16F2.8STM last year. It's a crazy piece of glass .. very happy with it (it's only $300). I'm not a big fan of dragging around the biggest super-professional L-lenses. I like it simple and reasonably priced. With some exceptions, of course, like that new RF 135F1.8L IS 🤤 so sexy. I think it could replace my 150F2.8 Apo Macro. It's just less Macro and more APO, plus extras.
