Panasonic GX1 Hands-On Field Test

Ғылым және технология

On a frigid Calgary day, Panasonic let us try out a pre-release GX1. The Camera Store's Chris Niccolls walks you through the features of the GX1, while attempting to stay warm and not get kicked out of the mall.

@vincentjanse These are not full reviews, especially with pre-production cameras like this one. These are field tests so you can see the features of the cameras and how they function. Also, we can only do a few videos on our schedules, so we choose cameras we actually like whenever possible. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Out of the box, the RX100 will give you a better image, but with the GX1 you can add fast primes, a viewfinder, and external flash. It depends on whether or not you're willing to invest more in the system after the fact. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Both :) Jordan is right about IQ RX100/M2 wins by a small margin. The GX1 is now only around $240 body only. Get the 20mm 1.7 and you got a nice camera. Menu and button layout is fantastic on GX1. So for the money it is a very good value. Now GX7 avail. in Sept. 2013 and it is awesome but $1000 body only. GX1 has a great fun factor to use, quite light and nice grip. RX100 is also great but a lot more. If you have the cash GX7 and RX100M2. So many lenses for M43

love your reviews - always great - my thoughts on the GX1 is that the ISO is the killer - I do not like the IQ or grain over 800 - I so often need at least 1600 iso - but awesome control wheel and function buttons and controls - well built - great video - and a nice lens selection - and a bit less $ then say the NEX6 and Fuji X E1 - So not a competition for the APS-C size sensor - but for travel and if you have good light then a good choice - for IQ with ISO over 800 no go

This is awesome. I would never have traded my gf1 for the gf2/ gf3. Actually I already thought about switching over to Olympus. But this will be a dignified replacement!

Shoot NEX7 & 5n and Fuji X100 as well as the OMD-5 so have lots of m4/3rd's lenses and now the GX1 is $239 body only just have to get one :) Hope ISO 1600 is OK. Some have said GX1 not good passed 800. but will be a nice backup for OMD-5. So maybe not as good as OMD-5 but for that price a no brainer. Love the 4 function buttons and multi func. wheel, touch screen, shoot via touch. Viewfinder $160 so reasonable. Just so well laid out. Nice review as always

Image quality is pretty much identical. What is more important to you, a small camera, or a viewfinder and flip screen? If you want the tiny camera, go GX1, if you want the viewfinder and flip screen, go G5. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

@BoxxyFan It's also much more expensive and has a more limited lens lineup. I love the NEX-7, but the GX1 certainly has its place. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Now that you've handled the gx1 and Nex-7, which do you prefer? It seems that you buy a camera for it's lenses and the GX1 appears to have a better lens selection. But, when you figure the cost of the GX1 and LVF2, the NEX-7 appears to be a good value..What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Love to see this go up against the NEX7. I know Panasonic says they are marketing the GX1 against the NEX5n but its the NEX7 that everyone is comparing it to. Also no manual exposure on video? Even the EPM1 has manual video.

@desmoface If I was just picking a camera, I'd say the NEX-7 is the better camera (our pick for Camera Of The Year). But the GX1 is part of a much more complete system, and the lenses are noticeably smaller. Right now, I'd go Panasonic, but that might change when Sony launches a few more primes.
