Panasonic G9 II First Impressions For Wildlife Photography

Field test of the Panasonic G9II for wildlife photography. How is the autofocus, can it track wildlife, how is the 20fps. I also try the brand new 100-400 giving 800mm field of view. I hope you enjoy, Cheers, Duade

Blue-billed Duck flapping in time with the shutter and Duade sneaking up with an excellent 'contact drill'; your vlogs are a joy to watch. Your finished images are second to none, they are perfect to my eyes. Loved that sunrise and the panos of the Winton Wetlands - absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Duade.

Hi Duade. Thank you for your review. Panasonic did well to send you the G9 II. "Good on them" making sure they sent their new beast to a skilled nature photographer with honest reviews. Very grateful for your time and thoughts! The more I hear about the G9 II, the more I'm tempted to grab one as soon as I can get a credit card out of my wallet (which will pull me out of retirement to pay for it and a new desktop video editing monster). Worth it!

It is great to see micro forth third as a format back into the game now with two great cameras in OM-1 and G9 markii that are capable of shooting in 50 and 60 fps full resolution in raw with afc. Something even the best full frame cameras can’t do.

Hi Duade, great video. I currently have the first G9 and the OM-1. I use the OM-1 a bit more because I shoot a lot of sports and birds along the coast and the phase detection focus on the OM-1 is better in those situations. I have held on to my G9 because is does take great pictures and it feels better in my hand. Two things I would love to see you do: follow through with a G9II and OM-1 comparison and compare the new Panasonic 100-400 to the Olympus 100-400. I hope you will continue to test and shoot some with Micro Four Thirds. Your videos on are some of the best on KZread and your presentation style is wonderful. I can't speak for everyone, but you have help me capture some nice shoots!

Great video Duade! The Panasonics really suffer from LVF lag when recording with an external monitor, so that is something to keep note of. This camera also supports writing to an SSD. That may significantly reduce the time it takes to empty the buffer. And SSDs are also very cost effective.

Great video! The 'near focus' and 'far focus' features on my G9 are mapped to the two custom buttons on the front, and I use them a LOT. They really help get the camera in the right general focal plane, and then it almost always handles it from there. I'm really interested in the G9II, although not any time soon as my currently G9 is working just fine for me.

I always enjoy the content of your channel and as a G9 user with the 100-400mm I'm especially interested in what you have to say about the G9 Mk2. On my G9 I've found it useful to select the square box focusing mode (it's expandable) and then overlay animal tracking on top of it. When you spot a subject, slightly touch the toggle switch to the right of the viewfinder and that seems to help wake up and focus the animal tracking. Even if your subject leaves the box the camera will often continue to track. Of course, the Mk 2 might be different but I hope this helps. Thanks for the attention you have been giving micro-four-thirds.

What a nice, relaxing review. It felt laid back and calming. I really needed that. The G9 ii and new 100-400mm look really nice paired here. I'm an OM-1 user, so it might not be enough to sway me. I'm not sure I can justify the upgrade. We always are seeking the next big thing, better gear. I think it probably is more important to learn your gear. At least, that's what I'll keep telling myself. How do you do the jpeg edit overlay on the raw like that? It's the first time I've seen anyone do it, and it adds a really nice touch to the video. Thanks for the great work, and keep on getting out there. That's really the reason we do this, isn't it? It's an excuse to get out and away from everything, into nature. Best of luck with your channel and photography. You really make an art out of it.

Fantastic review Duade, very well done. I use to have that exact set up, but with the original G9. It was a great birding camera, but was really let down by its total lack of phase detect auto focus. It was contrast detect only. That's the reason that I sold it and switched to Sony. It's so good to see Panasonic have finally introduced Phase detect. I would definitely buy this camera if I needed it. PS.... I'm very jealous of your Blue Bill Duck. I did photograph a Freckled Duck in that exact same spot about 6 weeks ago though.

Since the G9II episodes dropped yesterday, I’ve binged on most of them. What I really like about your episode, other than the exquisite landscape and birds, was that your episode showed the G9II in action. I’m especially impressed with the way you show the RAW image and how you cropped into that file for the finished image. May I ask how you got on with the pre-burst mode? I have a GH6 and a second-hand G9. The old G9 went toe-to-toe with the GH6 for image quality and this shocked me. When the G9 is available to buy then the GH6 is going bye-bye simply because the new G9 will take superior images and it’s filming capabilities match the GH6. This new camera has basically killed the GH6 and become the hybrid camera that other cameras have to compete with, including quite a few full frame bits of kit. I shall enjoy watching more of your stuff.

Panasonic does a great job with video, and they support their cameras with firmware updates very well. The only reason I sold my G9 was the AF just wasn't very good, specifically for birds in flight. I have an OM-1 now, if they get the AF as good as the S5II I'd consider the G9II because of the video capabilities. The new 100-400 lens is really welcome, I have the old one and it's not the greatest design. The zoom ring is awful, but the glass is okay. A lot of us M4/3 shooters were worried they'd abandon the platform.

Great to see you expanding your brand focus even further, Duade. And kudos to Panasonic for still investing in M43 ( plus putting the new gear in your hands!). I have the original PL 100-400 since my E-M1 MII days and used it extensively. It is super light and compact, so is a great travel lens if wildlife will not be the main focus of the travel. IQ was not great at the long end, in my view, and unfortunately the dual IS wasnt compatible with Olympus bodies. I did a photo walk with Panasonic using their G9 original with 100-400 series one side by side with my E-M1 set up. The body, UI and EVF of the G9 were fabulous and the IQ was good, but the DFD focus was not well-suited to wildlife. Great to see all the tech upgrades on MII, especially the PDAF (finally) and AI subject detection, both of which seem to work quite well. You'd have to think that the initial acquisition will be fixed gor production firmware or soon after. It was interesting to see your raw vs edited for this camera. Other than a couple of the early morning shots towards the sunrise where your had to or chose to bring out the orange instead of the blue, it seemed to me that they generally required less editing than all your other videos? What was your impression on that? It will be interesting to see your head to head against the OM-1. Please be sure to also test the PL lens on the OM-1, not just system to system. Also be interesting to see where you land on 20MP BSI OM sensor vs larger 25MP non-BSI Pana sensor for everyday use. The buffer of the OM (I think) is pnly around 90 shots despite the higher readout speeds, so it is interesting to see the G9 II is 200 shots...

Great initial video, Duade. I am intrigued by the this new version of the G9 now it has PDAF. I was an enthusiastic Panasonic m43rds shooter for many years and I bought the original G9 expecting great things but was bitterly disappointed by the poor performance of the weird proprietary DFD AF system in C-AF. Your video shows the issue I had: often the AF would not lock on to a subject at all, even if the bird was obvious in the frame. It got to the point where I went out wildlife shooting expecting the be disappointed and I was, so I migrated to a system based on PDAF and all the problems I was having disappeared. As I've grown older I need a lighter rig for wildlife and I am seriously considering the OM Systems OM-1 plus 100-400 and 300f4. I think all your followers will be interested to hear your opinions off both systems for wildlife shooting. I really do like Panasonic lenses and in fact the v1 100-400 was (and still is( a fantastic lens but I am shy of being bitten twice by a camera body which just does not focus consistently, whereas I never hear OM-1 users complaining of this.

One thing I noticed might work well for you as a wildlife photographer is the 0.5-1.5s pre-buffer mode. Depending on the buffer you choose, you could just half-press the shutter to initiate the buffer and then full press when you see the moment you want. This would prevent the blackout after a rapid-fire shoot and filling up the buffer, and no worrying about missing the moment since the last 0.5-1.5s are already in the buffer. This would also help guarantee you get the moment you want, because the full-press only comes after the moment you saw the shot. Hope that helps!

Thanks, yes, the preburst feature is a great tool, and wonderful for capturing a bird leaving a perch etc. I do find leaving it on all the time ends up capturing way too many shots you don't need. I hit the shutter a lot for different poses etc. If I hit the shutter 20 times and I am capturing 20 pre burst that is 400 shots I don't actually need if that makes sense. I have the top left dial for 20fps and 20fps pre purst so I can quicky switch. Have fun with the camera. Cheers, Duade

Fascinating to see the new technology for Panasonic Duade and I kept thinking of an Canon R7 comparison as this is all I know (even though Panasonic has a slightly small sensor size and 2x crop factor verses the R7 1.6x crop factor). You certainly made use of the 800mm equiv reach afforded by the versatile lens and took some terrific shots of a variety of wildlife. The Winton wetlands dawn and sunrise shots are so creative with pointing into the sun for some beautiful silhouette effect shots in both colour and B&W. Surely one or two of these would make your best shot portfolio! The diversity of birdlife and the sheer numbers of birds continues to amaze me and no wonder your fav spot. A joy to view Duade and a welcome to Spring in our little part of the world. Cheers mate.

Traditionally Panasonic cameras autofocus has performed badly when feeding a signal through HDMI. I wonder if it would perform better without the external monitor. I'd really like to see a comparison between the G9 ii and the OM1. Currently I shoot with an Olympus EM1 mk ii and a Panasonic 100-400mm, but I'm looking to upgrade. If the G9 ii is as good or better than the OM1 then I would get the benefit of Dual sync IS and better video performance.

Yes I'd love bird eye autofocus but the near far response is very good so I can't complain. At least it has bird recognition. Will I buy the G9ii? Maybe, but not right now. Very informative video! I’m excited to see you compare it to the OM-1. I still use the previous version of that lens when I travel with my OM-1. Fits in a tiny bag alone with a couple of shorter lenses and accessories plus my 11 inch iPad Pro. The bag fits under an economy airline seat but still has room on both sides for my feet. I still have my old G9 which I use as a backup. It does sound like the viewfinder may not stand up to the OM-1. I suspect that they will get the AF improved with firmware updates. Panasonic is generally great at working on firmware for years after a camera is released. Did they mention what (if anything) was changed with the new version of the lens. It appears to be identical to the older one. I have tried the Oly 300mm F4 with my original G9 with good results. I imagine it will work even better with the G9II.

Thanks for your efforts Duade in proving us with detailed independent analysis of equipment. It appears canon and Nikon are not interested in providing pro level aspc bodies. Micro 4/3rds may be the best option despite potential issues with noise and cropping. Looking at the om1 and 100- 400 and keeping the r7 as the back up. Like many I need a lightweight combo with good reach due to age and injuries.

Great to know that there is a choice when I eventually upgrade from OMD M1 iii. I look forward to comparison with OM1. I finally received an Olympus 100-400 (a bit of effort on my wifes part when she went to Japan). The extra reach over the little 75-300 is noticeable but I still take the little lens out on the kayak with me to lessen risk. I wish however there had been some heads up about the upgraded Panasonic 100-400ii which seems to have a lot going for it. As for Panasonic, my $600 Lumix fz300 bridge camera has features that are better than my Olympus so I expect the G9ii to be worth looking into.

Thank you for this video. I'm veeery interested in this camera, owning the first G9 since 2020. I bought an OM-1 last year, and the change in focusing method did get some time to get used to. That being said, the G9ii also uses phase autofocus, so it should be closer to what you're used to. Near and far focus priority are things I dearly miss on the OM-1, because I find it also struggles to acquire the subject when the focus point isn't close enough. On my G9, this near-far focus shift allowed me to gain precious time for the initial focus. If these options are still present on the G9 ii, then I'll surely get one for wildlife and use the OM-1 for macro and the other photography I do. The lag you see in the EVF during bursts does not surprise me. There's the same thing on the original G9. I think it's due to the sensor not being stacked.

I was using the G9 and 100-400mm for many years alongside the Nikon D500 and the 200-500mm. I would prefer the Nikon when I needed fast AF for " birds in flight" or other fast action. I have the Nikon Z9 now with the 100-400/4.5-6.3 +1.4x tele and the G9 doesn't get a look in any more. The Z9 though does have the same issue that you noticed with the G9 11 of hunting on the initial focus, especially birds on branches. I often have to go down to the ground under the perch to grab focus and then back to the bird. I've missed many shots because of this. I also use the Z9 in DX mode for birds. So with the 100-400mm and 1.4x it's equivalent to 840mm. And I have shot it one handed on occasions. ps I do enjoy your videos and wish I had a wetlands like yours nearby.

According to some they claimed the AF is right up there with Sony and clearly ahead of Canon. Micro Four Nerds shows impressive performance in AF compared to the OM-1 so hopefully you see the same things going forward. Excellent video as usual!
