Dave, great series. I hope your viewers realize and appreciate what you're trying to exhibit while doing this. Not only do you know your electronics, but have exceptional mechanical ability as well. It's too bad everything is made to be thrown out today rather than repair. I purchased my first Betamax from Sears around 1983 or 1984. It was a top loader and the first recording was a Three Stooges short! Blank tapes ran about 10-12 bucks apiece. I'd buy one a month! Thanks for your tutelage! BTW I was an electronic tech for 20 years and now repair and restore Vacuum tube equipment as a hobby.

Thank goodness for the invention of the internet, youtube, and people like you. I have a Panasonic E85H. I have enough basic knowledge and equipment to check electrolytic caps. But no oscilloscope, etc. After a power outage my unit was dead. My caps were good. So, I ordered the same component that you replaced, and it came back to life! Thank you very much!

Always liked the caddy system as is felt solid and reliable..and also because it reminded me of early CD-ROM drives! Upgraded to a 500GB Panasonic Blu-Ray recorder (twin tuner Freeview HD) in 2015. Can't remember the model number or the make but remember buying a DVD recorder back in the early 90's, worked great but it had a major flaw, would not record almost anything as the broadcasters starting sending a signal through that would disable the recording capability. So pissed, because it was just a excellent and reliable recorder.

I've had mine for years and I can confirm that they definitely won't break in half when repeatedly dropped onto a concrete floor :-). It's a shame that the bit was that brittle usually you want strength AND flexibility in a screwdriver bit looks like it had one but not the other.

Somebody 3 miles from my house was giving away a Panasonic dmr-dwt530t 1tb bluray recorder and another sa-bt100 full 5.1 Panasonic surround system just saved it from the skip -all in excellent condition with all the wires and color coded connectors and if you thought that was good they also gave me a fully boxed never opened Toshiba 3787DB 37 inch 4:3 crt TV. Can't believe my luck but had to borrow a friends 1970s diesel estate volvo to get that home. P.s which of the kids broke that special bit ? You'll never find another one right? Hard to say. Could have been a set up too. The new Mayor has been targeting businesses lately. Say for example he has a business license to operate an office out of his house as I did. The business license is very specific that it states that no clients are permitted. I had to pick up and deliver all the work, or have it shipped in. I was permitted to operate a home based office only. It was a tax grab basically, because what I do in my house should not be the cities business. If you are an app developer, editor, graphic artist ect. they want their cut. Even this youtube production thing they want their cut. In his city recently, the mayor instructed bylaw officers to book Uber and Lyft rides, because the Mayor did not want either ride sharing company in the city, even though ride sharing is provincially regulated. He was protecting the taxi industry that voted him into power. The bylaw officers would book rides in city limits and when a driver showed up, they ticked the uber driver over 500 for operating in the city without a business license. A business license that is not available. It wouldn't come as a surprise at all if the bylaw officers called to order a part and asked if they could pick up, and he said OK as he used to for me and a few others that were buying parts from him. He would always say, something like I will be available only today before 3 or between 2 and 3 or whatever hours he felt like, because he did not have a walk up counter that anyone could just show up. So it wouldn't not surprise me if they set him up posing as a customer and when he opened the door slapped him with a fine, and then used the lame excuse that a "neighbor" had complained. We have a few sleazy bylaw goof balls here too. I one day stopped my company truck at the side of the road, was sitting in my truck writing down a new contact phone number. A customer had called me while driving and I had taken the call on my hands free. So I pulled over to write the details. I no sooner stopped and the "parking Nazi" knocked on my window and wrote me a ticket for 143.00 for "standing, stopping or parking" within 2 meters of a driveway. My bumper was less than 1 foot past the yellow line. Naturally the company would not pay this ticket, so I lost about half a days wages because I stopped to take a note.

@@12voltvids ....I understand about the taxi situation. In the states, taxis have to pay fees, licensing, city fees etc. and medallion fees... Whereas, Uber and Lyft don't have to pay any licensing fees or anything to the city, so it not a level playing field since taxis pay so much money in fees and licensing etc. So on that regard I agree with the city laws ,in fact ,they (uber lyft) are able to undercut the taxi rates because they aren't paying their fair share of fees.... That would be like two repair shops and only one has to pay fees, licensing, taxes etc, and the other is given a pass, that's simply not right... Hopefully you get my drift, I'm saying all of this because after I got out of the electronics servicing, I had driven limo for a couple years, and we had to pay all the same fees as taxis Hence the taxi and limo commission who enforced those fees, whereas uber and Lyft paid absolutely nothing in fees and in turn would undercut everyone's prices but didn't have to pay or play by the same rules as the taxis and limos. We paid, they didn't.

@@frankpitochelli6786 Exactly the same here. For uber and Lyft the government requires that all drivers have to have a class 4 license which is a taxi or limo license. Opposition wanted just a regular class 5, but the government insisted that a class 4 and uber / Lyft have to have special insurance. Plus unlike other jurisdictions their minimum pick up fee and per mile fee is set. So the playing field is a little more balanced. It took 7 years to get here with push back all the way. The current government promised it in the last election and the delivered but made it pretty restrictive as to not kill the cab industry. I've never used it but talked to people that have and they say it works.

However I can see where some of the problem is, like all that Love Island and X factor crap, oh and Ms Browns Boys Jesus Christ lol

There are a few reason this won't work. 1 because the HDD has firmware on it, and a special format, so you can't even swap with another HDD unless you bought it from Panasonic, and 2 SSD drives are no good for DVR use. They are good for say booting your PC, but for video storage where many files are written and over written SSD drives wear out quickly, just like micro SD cards do when used say for a dashcam.

Why not buy a Desoldering Station, makes life SO much easier, i have bought the ZD-915, and i cannot think about the days i used desolder wire to desolder all my stuff. I have just repaired my fathers C64 computers (the chips, and put sockets on the boards), and it was so easy doing it with the ZD-915 Desoldering Station, and it's cheap also, and also going to recap all his C64 computers and floppy drives, i just have recaped my C128D caps of my PSU, and also recaped my C64c and floppy drive, needs only to recap my C128D MB and floppy drive, and then my father his C64 and floppy drives.

Here we go again about the desolder station. Because I am cheap, and don't do enough work to justify buying one. For the small number of components i change the braid works just fine.

12voltvids one thing i can't stand is no one has a go and uses their head to say ok this is what and why its broke, all i read and see is people replying with must be a capacitor thats failed so buy a cap kit. After they replace every cap in what ever there fixing it still doesnt work and wonder why this is why i enjoy watching your videos because you test parts and explain why
