PAN AM AIRLINES 1960s HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE TRAVEL FILM 61614

This 1960 color film on Hong Kong when it was a British Colony and Singapore is one of a series of Pan Am New Horizons travelogues. It is narrated by Ed Stokes, edited by F.D. Kay, and produced by Movietonews, Inc. It begins with a colorful ‘focus leader’ for the film operator (:06-:50). We see various quick shots of the countries (:51), followed by The New Horizons credits (:51-1:40). People are hand-pulled in rickshaws who weave in and out of cars on the very colorful streets of Hong Kong (1:45-3:30). A vendor carries hand-woven large baskets in the “Old China” market (3:31-4:00). Various children and babies are shown (4:01-4:15). Various store signs are shown for jewelry, linens, furs, furniture, and tailors (4:16-4:37). Inside a shop, a woman tries on a beautiful blue silk swing coat (4:38-4:55). The popular Chinese split skirt worn with stilettos, kitten heel pumps, and flats are shown on multiple women (4:56-5:30). A royal band marches past as the British judges in full traditional garb walk past (5:31-5:55). The junks and sampans are the homes to many people who live their lives on the water (5:56-6:20). A ferry carries passengers (6:21-6:30). A tourist couple arrives at the Sea Palace, a shipboard restaurant of Aberdeen, where they eat a nine-course seafood meal (6:31-7:21). The cog railway runs up to the peak, which has a view of the capital city of Victoria (7:22-7:59). Across the bay is the mainland section of Hong Kong, with its Hills of the Nine Dragons (8:00-8:19). A Pan American Boeing 377 Jet Clipper flies next to Singapore on the Malay Peninsula (8:20-8:25). We see a bird’s-eye view of this country and then from a boat (8:26-9:00). Singapore also has many junks and sampans (9:02-9:12). The City of Singapore has streets that resemble Hong Kong with rickshaws, motorbikes, buses, and cars (9:13-9:30). Laundry is hung on poles sticking out from the multi-story apartment buildings (9:34). The market streets are full of vendors selling fruit, vegetables, nuts, and fish (9:43-10:09). Two couples dine out. They sit at a large round table with a lazy susan full of exotic dishes (10:11-10:17). The shopping district store signs include silk, photos, and a tailor 10:18-10:27). Available to purchase are items made of ivory, metal, gold, and beads (10:18-10:45). Women shop for silk fabrics to be made into dresses (10:46-11:02). The Singapore Turf Club hosts thoroughbred racing. Horses trot by with jockeys onboard before racing around the track in front of a large crowd (11:04-11:48). A royal military review draws a stadium crowd (11:49-12:15). Tiger Palm Gardens is full of statues representing the architecture of old China (12:16-12:48). Religious freedom is symbolized through different types of worship buildings (12:49-13:17).
