Fabulous Hong Kong in the seventies
An 8mm home movie of the fabulous metropolis taken some 35 years ago. That's what my loyal viewers date it. Anyhow a sojourn visiting the waterfront, Repulse Bay, central district and much more.

just think of how rare it was in the 70s for people to walk around with a camera. These footage are extremely rare.

I was there then and have loads of photos... it was not rare to have a camera... it's the electronics capital of the world then for tourists and duty free to boot! The shop displays of stereos, electronics, appliances, jewellery, clothing was astounding and block after block, mall after mall. So unique to HK and no where in the world. The footage here may make it seem quaint but it was a pretty modern metropolis even then.

Yes, landing at n Hong Kong in 70s. Remember my first visit, from England. Thank you for this footage. Mr. Rogge. The hustle and bustle of the place. Repulse Bay. The Peak spectacular. I stayed at 434 Fortress Hill ,North Point. Block 1958. I remember going up the hill and then up stairway to fourth floor..Was built for employees of the Electric Company. Looking at the people on boats, I remember I bought one of those hats the women wore. Brought back memories.
2:08 Buses turning right from Waterloo Road into Shanghai Street, this was indeed a short-term traffic measure during 9-12/1980 just after the opening of the first phase of MTR, and gave a good time stamp for the footage
I love Hong Kong beyond words. As a friend said to me and I paraphrase "this city owes me nothing". I wish it would last forever but nothing ever does. But my goodness I do love this city and would not trade my time here for anything.
That's the Hong Kong I grew up with. Thanks for sharing. It brings back lots of memories!

I was less than 10 years old, brought up in a village where there were countless fields growing all kinds of crops. As the HK began to boom in the 80s, many things vanished over years. Now it's only buildings everywhere. Watching your video, brings back tons of memories. Yes, those were the good old days. To this day, never thought we are fighting hard for our democracy, our kids are dying everyday in battles against the evil Gov't. Such a big contrast to the harmony in the past. Anyone who is watching this video at this moment , please pay attention to what is going on in HK and support us in any ways. Let our voices be heard. Together we stand.

This is so nostalgic for me. My parents moved to HK in 1975 when I was nearly 5 years old. It was meant to be a 6 month placement but we ended up staying for 14 years so I grew up out there. This is the HK of my childhood and the one I miss the most. Now long gone except for footage like this. Thanks so much for sharing it.

I visited in 2017. I stayed at the Cordis Hotel. I loved the hotel and loved every minute of my time in Hong Kong. I was born in '72 and as a child I saw Hong Kong on television and promised myself that I would visit. I would recommend it to anyone. I would love to go back one day. Great video, keep up the good work. From a fan in Wigan, England.😊👍

ltbriar1, not yet torn apart BUT deeply divided by wealth gap division. English ed usually white-wannabes vs Chinese ed division. Those were the beginning signs... Now is the aftermath of ACCUMULATED deep seeded initial issues I stated. Last time didn't tear apart yet, coz your BREITBASTARD KKK BRITAIN master ruled with iron fists...NO DEMOCRACY. After 97, once tasted a bit of freedom, a landmine STRATEGICALLY & INTENTIONALLY LAID BY UR BREITBASTARD LUCIFERIC-SATANIC FREEMASON BRIT TO INFILTRATE & HIJACK YOUR ENTIRE HK SYSTEM & MURIKKKA'S CIA IN COLLABORATION.... FINALLY HK is torn apart as what it is today. Satanic West. So I wasn't wrong, you like most are just too deluded to see. Really enjoyed watching, many thanks. I'm from the UK but my father worked in Africa and the Middle East, and when I was very young I was out there too. We went to Hong Kong in about 1977/78 before heading back to the UK. I was only three and as you can imagine have very little memory, but those fishing boats with people living on them seem familiar.

Rare and Amazing film my dad visited Hong Kong in 1972 or 73 when he was in the navy on the USS Saratoga CVA 60 Aircraft Carrier i only wished he would have told me more about what Hong Kong was like but i guess he wasn't much of a story teller .RIP dad and old Hong Kong I sure wished i could have visited it then.
I loved Hong Kong. First went there with HMS Eagle, I think it was 69/70 . . Full of life, smells. It was great . .Back again early 70's after Freemantle, Perth, and got left behind there while undergoing medical tests. Lost my hearing completely right side. Got a temporary job escorting prisoners with shore patrol in HMS Tamar. Eventually got a flight home from Kai Tak into Haslar, then Sultan. Got discharged as unfit for sea duty, and cried like a baby . .
Thank you Mr Michael Rogge, this was 'My time', utterly familiar, If only it was still like that now. And I was still so young!Bless you all in HK.

At 10:33, the cylinder-shape building is Hopewell Centre, its construction completed in 1980. At 10:45, left hand side, you can see the Old Hong Kong Club, a colonial style building demolished in June 1981. So this film was between 1980-mid 1981.
