Pamlico River Winter Speckled Trout, Local Hole!

In this episode I spend a morning fishing in a popular Eastern NC trout hole. Believe it or not this was a Wednesday morning. When it's on it's on! Thanks for watching and subscribing.

    Did some trout fishing with a guy last year, we were going to pungo, place was a madhouse, went towards bath and had a good day. Shad and stripers are my bread and butter in the spring, I'm gonna try and figure out the trout this winter. New Bern is closest for me thinking about trying there Thursday or Friday

    Love the videos. I’m learning the Pamlico. Just curious if you don’t mind sharing, how often is wind direction a factor for you in choosing an area to fish? i.e. leeward vs windward, when conditions allow you to safely choose either. From a fish catching perspective I like the idea of wind blowing across open water towards me bringing with it plankton, bait, etc., but being able to safely/comfortably boat in that is always a judgement call. Is it even a factor you consider? Or are you primarily fishing based off other factors, e.g. known spots, water temp, depths, fresh intel, etc? Talking trout.

  • @haltysalty7537

    @haltysalty7537

    I guess it usually starts with intel or past history of a spot. More often than not a spot will hold winter trout on the same calendar days each year, this varies. If the spot is protected from wind, I'll try and fish it regardless. If it's more open, wind speed and direction are definitely a factor. Trout fishing is a finesse game. Its important to be able to feel you're bait or lure on the end of the line. Water temp, air temp, depths, salinity, presence of bait, all play into it. More than I can cover here. Logging conditions of your trips and results each year actually help a lot. I'm actually working on a video right that dives into some of this. If it turns out okay It will be on the channel in the coming days so keep an eye out. Thanks for watching.

    what kind of boat do you have and what do you think would be a good boat to start out with trying to get out there for the pamlico aroura area

    Man tough question. My boat is a 21' Carolina Skiff, old style with a flat bottom. Prior to that I had a 19' same model. I've loved them both. Flat bottom skiffs are unbeatable in shallow water but not comfortable in windy conditions with chop. Consider family comfort, your comfort, and Ofcourse budget. Bay boats have become very popular because you can still get shallow but have a v-haul for better ride. They are a bit pricey. Carolina skiff is a good starter boat. Hope that helps.

    Totally agree with you about crowds. I would simply rather not fish than fish in a bumper-boat pond. Although, if people would just keep a respectful distance it wouldn't be as bad. But you get these types that cast almost in your boat, or fly right by you full throttle, or rush over to you if they see you land one. No thanks. No thanks.

    @@haltysalty7537 well that makes me feel better, i know someone that breaks st. Croix and fenwick rods pretty often but most of the time its due to user error (hooking other rods when casting, damaging rods). I treat my rods very gently and I don’t use them to lift fish unless they are pretty small after hearing how easy the shimano GLF’s break (i have 2 GLF). I did have a GLF break randomly after a few months but my other one is almost a year old and is used weekly.

    At 4:09 in the video you are holding the rod under your arm, rod is bent in 1/2, fish dangling, your hand is above the lure. Never seen anyone do that. Please open the bail, lighten the drag, pull out some line or put the rod on the deck instead of working with a catapult loaded with treble hooks. So many things could possibly go wrong with the rod loaded like that.
