Palmer's Peeves, Vol. 4: Bars, Grips, Websites & Wheelbuilding

Спорт

Palmer's frustration is too great to be bound by any one theme. Today, he revisits a classic complaint about lock-on grips, laments the arrival of 35-millimeter bars, whines about our industry's poorly designed websites, and assures us that wheelbuilding is not an art.

Why do I love these rants? They just resonate with my old man grumpiness. And over the years there have been so many "why did they make this part this way? Ugh." Glad someone with knowledge is calling these things out and giving us non-pro bikers/mechanics a heads up on the b.s.

I'm building up a new bike at the moment and I've found some new peeves. Why oh why does Shimano have i-spec a, b, II and EV?! Why on earth did a single company come up with so many standards for connecting a shifter to a brake?! I just bought a new XT shifter and Zee brakes and needed to buy a Wolf Tooth adapter to make them come together. WAT?! Two new parts from the same company are incompatible! Why doesn't the industry make a single damn royalty free standard for this? The intentional incompatibility (aka lock-in) between brands is insane. Other recent peeves: Tubeless sealant that never seals the smallest holes. Even worse, sealant that pulls your rim tape off. I'm looking at you "Peaty's Sealant"! Worst sealant ever! Presta valves! Sure they work fine but they're so weak! Hubs that don't last. That's most of them. Maybe Onyx, Dt, Chris King, etc. will last but man they're expensive! Forks that come without enough oil, sometimes none! Forks with sloppy bushings from the factory or bushings that wear out way too quickly. Gloves that last less than 5 rides! Also why does ever pair of gloves look like it's made in the same place in China? Probably because they are. Cheap materials that aren't designed to last. Gloves used to be so much better. Why are Sram Eagle rear derrs so weak? The screw that holds the upper jockey wheel in place has about 1 mm of threads in aluminum and is easily stripped. I went through two expensive derrs before I rage quit and swapped to Shimano. Why is the Shimano quick link not reusable when the Sram one is? Why the explosion in bottom bracket standards?! Most of them are slight variations on other standards. BB30 is an abomination. Oh yes, and Sram's 29 mm DUB stuff. 29 mm, just cause ... Why do I need a new set of cranks for superboost, couldn't they make rings with an extra 5 mm offest? Why is the lockring on the Shimano 12 sp microspline cassette so insanely easy to strip? The old Shimano lockrings were great. Even Eagle cassettes are way better than this. Why do droppers put the damn schrader valve in such a hard to reach place? They should make it like a rear shock, an easy to reach valve with a cap. Why don't companies do recalls any more? Sram's guide brakes that stay on when it's hot and Norco's super weak chainstays should have both been recalled. I'm sure there's lots of other examples but I can't think of any recalls in the bike industry in recent memory. Phew, that was fun!

I understand the logic of the carbon wheels argument but if you are an aggressive rider over 180lbs carbon is the only way to go. I can’t even begin to tell you how many aluminum wheels I’ve broken, I finally broke down and got some Reserves and I couldn’t be happier. To be fair I broke one, but given the circumstances it was understandable and I had a new rim in a week.

I’m with you on the website design. I do a lot of research that amounts to a lot of time that could’ve been better spent but mostly the time is wasted because of the websites and how hard it is just to navigate. I have a lot of friends who are new to MTB and road cycling and they come to me and I try to help them... of course I always recommend a LBS but I also try to arm them with info that is current before they go in. I just don’t understand why the websites are so overly complicated.

100% correct on the wheel building. With the right tools and say the wheelbuilding pro book/PDF anyone can do their own wheels. I like doing it because then I know exactly what I have: what rim, what spoke length, what hubs. I'll tell you what, I rather build 10 wheels before I would ever do a full brake bleed again. Don't even get me started on suspension service. No thanks. The shop can do that.

Only started building my own wheels maybe 4-5 years ago because a friend told me much the same thing: it's not that hard. And it really isn't; you do need to pay attention to detail...it's not like installing some pedals, but more home mechanics should try it!

amass produced stuff that is not tested or inspected properly before it goes to the consumer, warranty that sucks, no spare parts or limited spare parts on shimano brakes you can't get spare parts, at least that's what it seems like, I haven't asked for spare seals, or pistons, but it's silly you can't just buy them as spares, to have brake you can fully service and use. all of the things mentioned Shimano annoys us with. i've had got warranty replacements cuss my brakes failed within warranty period, and the replacements leaked too, faulty seals on most if not all, it seems like the ones I put in the box that I used the least also leak, I saw wet spots in the original box i put them back into. so 4 sets repalcing 4 sets that leak, that's ridiculous. one brake even leaked after about 40 minutes, cus the seal was so bad in the caliper/piston, the others leaked too in few months, another in few weeks. ridiculous. but at least the Shimano XTR M9000 shifter can be rebuilt with new mechanism, covers, clamp, bolts...

Yeti is the only company I've ever emailed because I found their site so annoying. The person that responded agreed with me.

Kinked seat tubes, make no sense yet many brands keep doing it, Trek is one of them, but there are many other brands doing it. but there are some brands that don't do it, including Nicolai/Geometron which I own.

I completely agree, these so called “supple” 35mm bars that are being marketed are still stiff. If you’re after supple bars just use 31.8 mm.Same with wheels, if you want supple for your hardtail bike just use aluminum and build your wheels with double butted spokes laced 3x.

the grip thing, is not big deal for me, as long as bolts are easily accessible I am fine with it. but brake clamping, and shifter clamping, and lack of suitability. and shifters that dont fit me has been been my peeves for years. but at least Shimano has abandoned the clamp used on M6000, M8000 series.... brakes, it was in the way of mounting Archer Components remote The budget shifters usually you can't place so you can shift on Shimano setup, if you want the brake to be positioned so you can brake, this is the case with shimano budget models, ridiculous, i've seen many kids bikes with it, and the cheap brakes you can't adjust the brakes to fit kids and be functional cus doing that means they can't brake, cus the actuation of the brake is reduced as you adjust the lever closer to the grip. So I I have to disappoint the kids with the truth. I try to adjust it for them, so I find a compromise that can work, but it's not optimal.

Cool. I definitely agree with your rants but I think it would be better, if you include you trolling or talking to one of the company's CEOs to complain 😉. Okay, may be not great for business but surely would be entertaining!
