Palmer's Peeves: Shimano & SRAM

Спорт

Ryan Palmer takes aim at a few tiny grievances with Big Blue and Big Red. In each case, he admits that the parts themselves are actually marvelous feats of engineering. Most can be found on his own bikes. But that's the problem. They're almost perfect. And for Palmer, that's just not enough.

It’s basically the imperial to metric conversion. The bike industry used to be strictly imperial, so when working with dual crown forks and their 8” = 203mm rotors, it made since. It’s part of a legacy that takes ages to convert. Like the seat tube angle. We consumer have been griping about that shit for 10-15 years. The mtb frame manufacturing just realized mtb is not an off road road bike anymore.

Even if ( and it shouldn’t) the lockring comes loose, the rotor sits fixed on the splines. 6 bolt is a shitty design!

I think difference between an axle and a spindle is more that a spindle is directly mounted to something, ie a crank arm or a suspension upright on a car. An axle typically spans two supports and has a componet rotate around it.

Shimano & SRAM Peeves, first critique Rockshox, lol. Really enjoyed this video non the less. I approve of the 200mm rotor, Still like the rolla ma jig, if you are a cyclist you have spare shifter and brake cables in stock as well as housing. The cable on a shimano derailleur comes out a such a crazy angle that it wears the coating off of the cable in the first few shifts if you don't have the correct housing end, I'll take the stupid wheel any day. I've only ever run spd's, would like to try the crankbros, but it it ain't broke don't fix it. HG driver is super simple to install, and I think the coating on the SRAM cassette lasts longer.

I'm no proponent of Shimano (I much prefer Sram overall), but I beg to differ on the CentreLock. As fas as I'm concerned, it's the best rotor-hub interface there is. Reasons: it takes a much shorter time to attach and detach CentreLock rotors; a use of a torque wrench is slightly less necessary than in the case of the 6-bolt system - and, most importantly, it is compatible with every brake rotor standard through use of an adaptor.

Aligning those damn small cogs into the body was such a PITA. Then, when I put the lock ring on, I shifted one of them slightly and ended up stripping out the lock ring. Luckily there was enough thread left so I don't think it was an issue, but way more difficult than it should be.

Microspline is the way they are because it makes it so much cheaper to produce the cassette. Take a look at the prices of an XT cassette vs an x01, you will immediately see why having the MS is superior from a from a manufacturing point of view. Maybe they could have done a better job with the spacers, and yes it's easier to install an XD cassette, but once you have to replace it and see the prices all is forgiven.

The same applies for cassettes. They should never come loose on the trail, and that's an accepted fact, so the same should be accepted for centerlock rotors. Centerlock rotors are better and should not go away. It should just be widely communicated that the recommended torque is high.

Richard Jeffery Jesus. how long are you leaving it on there? Never had any issue getting a rotor off. I’ve been wrenching at a shop for a few years now. Had one come loose on a ride once. Got it hand tight and didn’t have any problems except some extra noise. At least I didn’t have any bolts to lose. Have had to drill out a few 6 bolt wheels

@@richardjeffery517 Your cassette is as likely to come loose as a centre lock rotor is? How often do you tighten your cassette on the trail?

My Shimano peeves are: - Stop manufacturing fishing junk. Animal abuse isn't cool. - Still no 12-speed road / gravel groupsets. - The Di2 is a chore to set up and remove / migrate between bikes, compared to Sram eTap. Ought to be truly wireless, like the Sram. - The bleeding port threads in the The GRX (810) and like drop bar brake levers are made of the cheapest, easiest to strip plastic. Threading a soft plastic bleeding funnel to a single nanometre torque may strip the threads, permanently ruin the levers and require a shifter-lever replacement. Happened to Me a few days ago. - Shimano brakes need ridiculously frequent re-bleeding and tend to get spongy in no time. - Shimano road and gravel shifters may appear to be permanently damaged if the shift cable isn't tightened sufficiently. - The cable housing in Shimano road & gravel shifters is rather tricky: the cable can randomly get kinked at the shifter end or shoot out of the housing and shifting will stop working. - The shims that come with 6-bolt brake rotors -are superfluous. They have no function. - Likewise, the wires that come with Shimano disc brake callipers - are redundant, as far as I'm concerned. - The standard Shimano GRX lever boots are very crude and ugly. My Sram peeves are: - Extremely expensive 12-speed cassettes. Many times more expensive than Shimano ones. - The washers required (!) for installation of eTap (AXS) front derailleur may scuff and likely damage carbon seat tubes in long run. - Sram ought to do away with the 6-bolt interface adopt the CentreBolt protocol instead. - Sram road shifter levers scratch too easily. My peeves with both: - The rubber lever boot does not sit flush and kinks at places. Ought to be lockable somehow (for instance, with a couple of small screws).
