Palm Trees Painted in Watercolour Plein Air
Too windy for a beach scene so headed to a sheltered spot to capture these majestic palm trees

Love watching you make decisions and watching you resolve things. Your powers of observation are wonderful, as is your love of color. Thanks!

Hi Linda, Glad you’re enjoying my videos. Watercolour is a wonderful medium, probably the most exciting medium as it’s so portable and that adds to the fun. Best wishes, James
This is my kind of watercolour painting. I enjoy painting palm trees . Love the colour and your windows. Windows and steps, bane of my painting life. A lovely painting James

Hello again, Lyn, I’ve really enjoyed painting, palm trees, always good to try something new. Windows are a bit tricky. I always remember to try and keep it simple and that helps. Best wishes, James
Love the varied use of colour and the way you see the values before the colour. Making the painting look like a watercolour is a great piece of advice but harder to achieve than you make it look. Thanks for another challenge in my painting journey. Looking forward to the next adventure. Thanks

Hi Mike, It’s one of my main goals in painting Watercolour to make it look watery. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, I really enjoy it! Lots more adventures to come. Looking forward to more campervan journeys. Best wishes, James
Can't wait to get outdoors and play with your technique! So inspired!

Hi Mary, That’s really great that you’re going to get outdoors. If you haven’t done it before, it’s a little bit nerve racking at First, but keep going and it will become normal. I’m looking forward to hearing how it goes. Best wishes, James
You caught the sunny, warm tropical feeling.

Hi Joanne, Great to hear from you again. It’s great to be out of the cold and into some nicer weather. However, home soon and back to reality. Very glad to hear that you’re learning so much. Best wishes, James
Love the painting. Lucky you being out there, away from the cold Scottish winter!

Hello again, Claire, Glad you like the painting. It is nice being somewhere warm, but all too soon I’ll be in the cold again! There’s no place like home! Best wishes, James

Living in Florida since the mid 60's... will now look at palm trees 🌴 with simplicity as in impressionistic. And with way more colors than green/brown.... found ur channel last week😊.Ann, Florida fan

Hi Ann, You must be used to seeing palm trees, it’s still an unusual site for me. I always like to introduce unusual colours into things, as it just makes it a little bit more exciting for me. I hope your colour experiments go well. Best wishes, James
Hello there, I just discovered you and I’m totally enjoying your teaching method! Especially how you mix colors!!! Actually it was this video that has me hooked!!! Thank you! I’m rather new to watercolor and I’m so excited to have found you on KZread!

Hi Marlene, I’m so happy that you’ve discovered my channel and you are enjoying the new ideas. Above all, I feel that this is the most fun way of painting, and if you can make it fun, everything slots into place more easily. Keep up the excitement, and you’ll get there! Best wishes, James
Love the way you turned this scene into a lovely painting!
I have to say that my "go to" shadow mix is Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson, rather than cobalt blue, as you then get a transparent mix which results in purpleish shadows but with the colour underneath shining through! Nice location for plein air!!

Hi Mike, I normally use ultramarine In my shadows, but I haven’t really tried Alizarin crimson! I’ll give it a go. I hope your painting is going well and that you’re getting out to paint. Best wishes, James
I love this! Beautiful painting!

Hi Kathy, Glad you like the painting so much. It was a lot of fun to do! Thanks, James
Hi James. As always really enjoyed the vidio, so please keep them comming. I tried painting this one at home, perhaps if had the sunshine it would have turned out better, it certainly is difficult to paint loosly, I think you said it's a balance whereby the results either looks like a proffessional has done it or a 6 year old, mines the latter hum.

Hi Martyn, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! It’s great that you had a go at painting the scene. It’s interesting to try to work out how to simplify painting and knowing when to stop. I think painting from life helps to make those choices better as somehow having limited time makes you see things clearer. I’m sure next time you artistic age will improve from six years old! Best wishes, James
Thanks for this James another skilled painting you make a hotel look like a work of art! Is there a big difference between an ordinary brush and a Raphael? And is it synthetic or hair?

Hi Robert, Glad you liked the painting. The Raphael brushes I use are sable. I’ve had the many years and I managed to buy them on a very good deal. They seem to be very expensive now. I would say there isn’t much difference between any sable brush, as long as they are the right size I’d be happy to use a non-branded one. My Windsor Newton mops are a synthetic mix, which I’m very happy with. I hope your painting is going well. Best wishes, James

@@JamesPotterAboutArt I still have a home there but I live in the US now, near Atlanta. Glad you enjoyed our island and hope you return.
I have heard other artists pronounce it that way. And they're usually from the UK like yourself so maybe it's a geographical pronunciation.
