I am interested because I just got myself a sturdier tripod. It is for photography though, so I will need to find someone to help me put together the top and then the board with the Velcro that you have figured out….. brilliant. Thank you for being so generous with your tips and ideas.

Hi Kalaysia, That’s great that you’re sorting out your painting equipment. The tripod I use is for photography as well. You just need the adapter to connect it to it. Here’s the link to it. www.artsupplies.co.uk/p/camera-tripod-mounting-bracket I’m looking forward to hearing how it all came together. Best wishes, James.

Thanks! The stick idea is great, especially when travelling as it means I don’t have to worry about making sure the brush holder is kept upright. 😊 James
Great set-up, especially the Velcro. Brilliant! I'm glad you mentioned how sturdy it was 'in gale force winds' because I had wondered about that. Breathtaking location. Thanks James. from Qld. OZ

James, I was looking for that review you mentioned in my previous communication with you and seen this one. It was all useful information but the tip about the stick bundled with the brushes was really a useful tip. I will immediately follow your advice. I continue to look for the review of that brass palette you referred me to. Robt

I wasn't aware in other areas of the world it's called NOT paper. In the US I'd only heard it called cold pressed. I really enjoy learning new things and cultural nuance in working methods and language. 😊 This is a really great setup, thank you for putting this together. I often travel with several watercolor blocks. However I might need to try this board method it looks like a very good option. I'm a new subscriber. Hello! I came to know about the word ‘not’ early on in my watercolour journey, but I always found it odd. I suspected that it meant not hot-pressed, but I was not sure until I watched this video. I still find it a very wired name 😂.

Hi Kiki Paper description around the world is interesting. Hot pressed is the only way you get smooth paper. The two other types of paper, rough and NOT are cold pressed. So calling it NOT paper makes it different from rough paper. All very confusing 😅 I’ve never really got on with block paper. The paper seems slightly different, slightly softer, even if it’s exactly the same brand so I stick to the sheets. Thanks James
Thanks! Wonderful explanation, I'm looking forward to making my own set-up.😊

It is the Velcro and support board. I had used my tripod and made a top but because of the size difference it was not stable side to side. It is your under board that acts as a size intermediary that gives the stability. The shelf, well you get the total genius award for that one. I also admire our strong and confident brush strokes. Being an admirer of Wolf Kahn and the impressionists, it make sense.
Thank you so much!, it was always a mystery about that setup of tripod. I had requested many watercolor artists, if they could share the details, but never got to hear from them ever. Deeply appreciate your sharing of knowledge! Also I was in wrong understanding that MDF boards aren't waterproof. Please correct me also any specific details you'd like to share on that.

Hi. Glad you enjoyed the set up video and that you’ve got something from it. I’ve always used MDF boards and I’ve never found they warp. Probably a primer would help to prevent any problems. Luckily, MDF isn’t expensive so even if it does go wrong, I haven’t lost much. Good to hear from you. Thanks, James

Thanks, i was admiring your setup in a previous video. I like the style in which you paint landscapes, do you do portraits and still lifes in watercolor as well?

Thanks for your comment, glad you like my setup. I love portrait painting and will be doing some from life which I’ll post, probably within a month or so. I’ve done some still life and will do some demonstrations of that in the future. 😊 Thanks James
Set up looks great. Does the wood with the aperture work as well as tape to leave a white border and stop water and pigment seeping underneath? Thanks Jo in France 🇫🇷

Hi Libellula , Glad you found this one. It’s a really great set up. One thing I like about it is its simplicity and also each board has a standard size which makes it much easier for framing afterwards. Hope you can make one yourself Best wishes, James
Thanks for the thorough explanation of your set up! I usually paint on watercolor blocks, but your board setup looks like a great way to have more choice of paper size depending on the scene. Do you find the paint pools a great deal at the edges of your frame? Does it ever leak down beneath your border? How many binder clips have you found you need to keep that from happening?
@JamesPotterAboutArt

Glad it was helpful. I do find that my set up is much better than having blocks, as you said, I have much more choice of size of paper. I don’t find there is any problem with pooling of paint, if there is a bit, when I come to frame the painting a mount goes over the top of that anyway. The top board goes over the paper by about an inch, so it doesn’t go onto the lower board. I normally put two clips at the bottom and one clip either side, that seems to do fine. Thanks James 😊
Wonderful set up!! Do you have a link for what type of brushes you use?
@JamesPotterAboutArt

Hi Cathy, I don’t have a link to my brushes yet but I will get around to sorting this out. I’ll probably talk more about them in a future video as well. Thanks James
Hi James and Tanya, I have been enjoying your new channel, I was glad to watch this video, I tried with a little success to make a couple of frame holders from acrylic sheet. Mdf is easier to cut fir sure. Question though have you sealed your all the way around to stop water ingress and warping as mdf is normally bad for that? Also in the black bags you carry one sheet of paper in the chosen frame? Or more than one in that frame? Does that mean you paint on more than one sheet as you paint on the top sheet? Or do you have extra sheets loose in that black bag. Assuming you head out to paint more than one image on a hike. One more thing, would love to see more of the vw camper and filming set up I see a DJI mic. Best wishes, Paul and my vdub Clarabelle

Hi Paul, Thanks for your comments. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel. My boards are part sealed. However, not by design as they are reject boards from oil painting. I haven’t had any problems with warping yet with the ones that aren’t primed. When I go out to paint, I sometimes have two boards of different sizes, each with a piece of paper in, or I take two pieces of paper mounted in the frame, and then, when I paint, I put the spare piece of paper in the black bag. I will be doing much more filming of our campervan soon, as it’s such a big part of our life. I’ll also do an episode on filming and gear for that. Thanks again, James and Tanya 😊
Hi James, really enjoyed your vidio and stuning view, as usual I have a question. Your boards, I have often thought what a good idea the hinged picture windows are as I have seen quite a few proffessionals using them. Do you use anything to fix the paper to the board or is it just held in place by bulldog clips around the endge of the picture window? I find I cannot get very good results unless I stretch and tape the paper usually 140 Ib NOT as not taping it just cockles badly and I end up with pooling. Most proffessionals seem to use 300Ib paper which is not so susepable to cockling is that the weight paper you use. Overall really liked your light weight setup and the velcrow is a real winner .

Hi Martyn, Glad you enjoyed the video it was a stunning place! I’ve painted with these boards for many years, and for me, they are perfect solution for holding the paper. Yes, the paper is held down by the clips around the window of the frame. I use 140lb NOT paper and I don’t stretch it. I just put it in the frame and clamp it down. 300 lb paper is great, but I don’t really use it. I do have some in my stock which I will use, but I think that 140. LB is good enough and I feel that the paint flows better onto it There is a little bit of cockling, however, when the painting is framed, I don’t notice it at all. Hope this helps Best wishes, James
