Palenque: Africa in Colombia | TRAVEL VLOG

There are very few places where forced assimilation of language, religion, and customs have not affected the lives of the descendants of African slaves today. Palenque is one of those few gems where you can still see Africa shine through every part of life. From the music to the religion, you really see Africa in South America.
I had the opportunity to do a tour with Experience Real Cartagena. This company, founded by Alex Rocha, is the best company to use if you want to look into Afro-Colombian culture. I had gone on one of his tours of Cartagena before and it was fantastic! This trip to Palenque did not disappoint either. If you go to Cartagena, you MUST hit up Alex Rocha. experiencerealcartagena.com/

Am from Nigeria and it's so fascinating seeing how Afro Colombians still preserve the African culture, the dance is not different from the dance I see in cross river state Nigeria. When I look at Afro Colombians closely I see a different features from we west Africans which suggests they must have been mixed along the line. Mucho amor desde tu hermano negro desde Nigeria.

Actually most of them have alot of ancestry & culture from Kongo Kingdom (the Bakongo tribe), and some other ethnic groups in Angola, Congo & Gabon. Even the language Palenquero is spoken there, a creole mixed with Kikongo and Spanish mainly, with small influences from other languages/dialects. Their cultural dance as well shares similarity with the Bakongo traditional dances.
