It can be fun when you get in on a PMD hatch and as you say can be frustrating. My experience has been the fish get real selective on both color and size but when you hit the right combination hang on . I have a couple of big fly box dedicated just to PMDs you can never tie to many of these in #20/16 and in multiple hues of the yellow, cream , and in this case pinkish . Nice to see a traditional hackle fly. I live Pmd heaven here in Western WY, the staple dry fly type everyone uses is a comparadun or sparkle dun. I am going to try your traditional tie in a shade of pink.
