Palästinalied - German Crusader Song

Музыка

Music and lyrics by Walther von der Vogelweide, arrangement and vocals by Farya Faraji, featuring my good friend Étienne Nantel, with many thanks to Christian, one of my viewers, who kindly helped me out with the pronunciation of this one.
The Palästinalied, or Song of Palestine, (the title is a modern one, as we don't know how it was called back then), is a German song from the early 13th century written and composed by Walther von der Vogelweide, with indications that the melody is a repurposing of an earlier Occitan troubadour song. It expresses the point of view of a pilgrim having arrived in the Holy Land, and offers a glimpse into the mindset of the pilgrims and crusaders of Europe of that era. With my rendition, I limited the text to the first stanzas, and sought to express the feelings of humility and meaning felt by the protagonist--I've always interpreted this as a solemn and introspective piece of text, not a bloodthirsty and warlike one.
The pronunciation I used is that of Mittelhochdeutsch, or Middle High German, the standard variety of High German spoken in the Middle-Ages; as such, there as some notable differences with modern German pronunciation. Thanks once again a whole lot to Christian for having helped out with the pronunciation.
The arrangement is, as far as my intent is concerned, meant to be entirely historically accurate, and should reflect the sort of arrangement one would have heard back then for this song: a largely monophonic one, which means that there is little use of harmony, counterpoint, and no chords. The instruments utilised are the vielle, the lute, the hurdy-gurdy, the bowed psaltery, and a bagpipe to provide the drone underneath. The vocals are ornamented in a style veering almost towards Balkanic or Middle-Eastern aesthetics, as it is attested that this was how Europeans of the Middle-Ages sang, the technique being called "fracturam in cantu" by some theoreticians of the era, and being notably very much used by the Germans.
Lyrics in Mittelhochdeutsch:
Nû alrêst lebe ich mir werde,
sît mîn sündic ouge siht
daz here lant und ouch die erde,
der man sô vil êren giht.
ez ist geschehen, des ich ie bat,
ich bin komen an die stat,
dâ got menischlîchen trat.
Schoeniu lant, rîch unde hêre,
swaz ich der noch hân gesehen,
sô bist dûz ir aller êre.
waz ist wunders hie geschehen!
daz ein magt ein kint gebar,
hêre über aller engel schar,
was daz niht ein wunder gar?
English translation:
For the very first I am alive to myself,
since my sinful eye beholds
the noble land, and also that earth
to which so much honour is given.
That has come to pass for which I have ever prayed:
I have come to the place
where God walked in human form.
Such fair lands, rich and noble,
as I have seen elsewhere,
you are the honour of them all,
what miracles have come to pass here!
That a maid bore a child,
lord over all the angelic host,
was this not a perfect miracle?

CORRECTION: Please note that the rythmic buzzing sound around the end of the video is anachronistic due to an oversight; the hurdy-gurdy did not have the physical components required to provide this sound until the early 1500's. As a German, I'm very very excited to see this. I like this song (and generally Walther von der Vogelweide's work; he's our most cherished medieval poet) very much, and you totally did it justice; it's a great rendition and very well pronounced (I remember you saying that you struggled with MHG's pronunciation at some point earlier, but it's very clean here). Thank you so much for this!

Greetings. I respect you from Belarus. It is very surprising to me how an Iranian composer can create music of various cultures and historical periods so quickly. I was especially pleased with your Slavic songs: you sang like a real Balkan Slav. Are you considering the possibility of creating music of Bronze Age civilizations in the future? Egypt, Sumerians, Hittites? As far as I know, there is plenty of information about this music. This is a very interesting topic to which little attention is paid. Thank you for everything you do! Without you, my Total War Attila is nothing.

I don't know what it is - whether your arrangements, your singing style, your choice of lyrics, the content of your videos that accompany them, your explanatory texts, your general attitude or perhaps a combination of all - but your songs take the history from the usual "bad guys vs good guys" stuff down to the individual human level, breaking open a gate in mind eventually leading to understanding the "other". As a Turk, although irreligious, I never viewed the Crusaders as anything but a foreign occupation force that brought anything but misery to this part of the world. After repeated viewings of this video, now, I somehow can understand why they might have wanted to free "their" holy land from "foreign" rule - this doesn't necessarily mean I support their intentions or the methods they chose towards realizing them but I don't resort to judging them good or bad either. I had a similar enlightment during listening to your "the Fall of Constantinople" song. Although unlike most Turks I have always been an admirer of the Byzantine Empire, I never thought about how the Constantinopolitans of May 1453 might have felt trapped in their city. I can easily sympathize with them now, although they have always been the "bad guys" of the discourse told to me since my childhood. This world filled with hatred and division to its brim needs a lot more people like you. Please keep up your work. Please.

It's kind of funny how your history paints the Byzantines as the bad guys even though it was the Turks who initially began their conquest of Anatolia with the Seljuks. Now I don't consider the Seljuks or the Turks to be the bad guys because they were just doing what all people's at the time did: conquer land. I may be a bit of a Romanophile/Byzantinophile, but I respect Turkish people and even consider the Ottomans to be the true heirs of the Roman Empire. After all, they have their claim by right of conquest.

Great version! I'm from the town where Vogelweide most probably was buried 1230, his grave/memorial is placed in a small courtyard ("Lusamgärtchen") next to a cloister and to this day, there are always flowers on top of it because people are coming nearly daily to put some flowers down. There are 4 holes on top of his grave stone / memorial stone for water and grains because Walther wanted that birds should be fed daily on his grave. It's a really nice and calm place, I can highly recommend to visit it if you should ever come to Würzburg.

Your work is the best historical music I've ever heard. I am very interested in Iranian history and world history. As a Chinese, look forward to your future work involving China or more East Asia. As we all know, after the fall of the Sassanid Empire, the Persian royal family went to China and lived in Chang'an, the capital of Tang Dynasty China at that time. (Don't know if you are familiar with ancient music in East Asia, it might be a bit difficult) You are also expected to create a wider range of works, even beyond ancient Eurasia.
