Pairing Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing with Powder Bed Fusion

Ғылым және технология

Stephanie Hendrixson shows examples of “hybrid” manufacturing seen at RAPID + TCT 2022 in the Fabrisonic booth. Parts illustrate use cases for pairing ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) with conventional sheet metal and powder bed fusion, including multimaterial applications.

This UV AM may create a wider approach in future by creating well finished lattice structures as well. So great to see the engineering world expanding the AM horizon and AM Media staying at the top of it ❤️

I can easily envision this being used on an internal combustion engine piston.

that is nice tool. can fuse Wolframium or silicon carbide? or ceramics like zirconio?

UAM is limited to welding metals. We can embed silicon carbide or other ceramics, but it is embedding. UAM has been used to weld layers of W for radiation shielding. Typically W is welded to a softer alloy like aluminum or nickel. We can't print monolithic W.

Are vibrations of the materials not generating heat? 1:20

There is some local heating, but max temperatures at the interface are ~200 F. At any given location this max temperature is only experiences for 1-200 milliseconds. Thanks for watching!
