⚡️Painting Wood Carvings With Acrylics - 2 Different Methods.

Ойын-сауық

Here's a painting experiment that went pretty well! I'm showing you how I paint the hillbilly bust and the pensive man bust using the same colors of acrylic craft paints and two different methods to achieve a dry brush look to create contrast and interest.

Thank you Cousin Jack and Sunni! Cool video. I like both results from the dry brush and the sandpaper. The sandpaper gives more contrast with the light and dark. I like that. Something about the dry brush in the beard makes it look more natural to me. If I had to pick I'd vote for the sandpaper guy. I love the experimental stuff. Thanks.

For the life of me I could not see the advantage of the white first, brown second on the beard and face, until you used the 600 grit abrasive. What a stunning change. I think one has much more control with that technique (and I think it looks better) than the dry brushing the white on the brown. More, more, more painting tips PLEASE!

Hi Stephen! I agree with your assessment. The abrasive sheet gave me more control and the ability to be more precise compared to the large surface of the dry brush. Thanks for your comment!

Honestly, they both look good! I think I'd be inclined to do dry brush for the hair and beard, as they look a bit more natural, and the sandpaper for the eyebrows. I always have troubles with the eyebrows.

Jack, Great painting tutorial. I have been using a white porcelain paint palette to mix my paints. It lets me see my actual color as I thin it or as I mix colors together. Also they make clean up very easy, even if the paint has dried.

Nice tutorial! It looks like you try to preserve the burn marks which I like. I guess that watering down the paint helps you achieve that. Are there other ways to preserve those burn marks once you've painted the carving?

  • @whittling

Hi Stephen! I have added burn marks after painting on occasion to enhance a particular detail. More often I will add an antiquing medium after painting and finishing because I like the contrast and the way it creates dark shadows in all the right spots.

@@whittling Yes, I like the antiquing wax also and how it darkens those crevices. I also like how it changes the "chalky" color of some acrylic paints.
