Painting van Gogh's Cypresses with Emmy Award winning David Dunlop
Van Gogh at the Asylum in Saint-Remy, France - Episode 101 of Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop - Season One. David takes us through the tumultuous, penultimate year of Vincent van Gogh’s life in 1889 at the asylum of St. Paul de Mausole at St. Remy de Provence, France. David demonstrates the personally expressive palette and brushwork of van Gogh while describing van Gogh’s uniquely spiritual and impassioned intentions for painting. David demonstrates van Gogh’s drawing techniques as a preparation for his paintings, reveals his connections to Dutch landscape painting and Impressionist color, and shows how he employs these ideas with expressive, moving gestures in the landscape of van Gogh. David then works with his student Lisa Love to reimagine a different painting on the grounds of St. Paul de Mausole.
The entire Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop series is available at @www.daviddunlop.com/pbs-dvds/....

I have a student who is trying to emulate Van Gogh. VG was never one of my favorite artist as I tend to be more into realism. I have had to take the time to learn more about him and his works and have gained a much better understanding of him and appreciation of his paintings. Thank you for this very enlightening video. I will no doubt be employing some of VG's techniques into some of my paintings.

Im starting out in just oils 2 months now,, and painting outside in the fields... but I cant get my oil paint to become lovely and creamy like yours. May I ask what brand of oils you are using and did you add any further linseed oil or something else to make it creamy?

Hi, youareamazingyesyou5880 - And the same to you! I use almost all of the brands of paint but I always use the fine arts line if that is available. I choose paints that do not have binder and might use linseed or walnut oil binder. Kind regards, David and Connie
He’s clearly improved Lisa’s painting, and what she did was good, but not to his professional level, of course. But deep down I think she’s like - I spent hours making that, and you come along and effortlessly elevate it in minutes, while being funny and narrating a tv program with interesting tales, you bastard. 😂 Love the video David, fantastic and inspiring!

Was thinking the same thing. She may have agreed but what was she going to say ? Really ? She looked a little hurt.
Wonderful video and full of history. Maybe if you use your fingers to spiral and circle blues and other hues into the sky, you could capture that roiling technique. Right now it doesn’t look similar to what Van Gogh did.

Dear minnahumble2294 - From Connie - Our artist Lisa was in fact very happy to have David offer his thoughts and suggestions directly onto her painting. David always asks if the painter would like him to demonstrate on another surface or on the painting - we do not usually show this in the program. All of the painters in this series are longtime students of David's. They feel they learn more from the process of seeing what he is doing on their painting and can apply that elsewhere - if that is what they want to do. Kind regards, David and Connie

Very good video. However, I think that David is using brushes that are simply to big to capture an essential part of Van Gogh's style. That is the pattern of strokes and lines that flow together like currents and eddies. This is very apparent in Van Gogh's reed pen drawings.

I don't understand why a photo was used as if it were of Vincent van Gogh. This photo has never been authenticated.
Karel here as an artist myself I wonder if van Gogh thought about his style an what he had learned from other painters or it wss organic just came naturally. To be honest I liked your painting better then van Gogh cause not as busy.
Van Gogh strikes me as a very disturbed man. VERY disturbed.

Thank you for watching the program and for writing. David always asks the artist if she prefers that he discuss his thoughts with her about her painting or if she prefers that he show her by actually painting on her painting. The artist was a long time student of David's and prefers that he demonstrate on her painting. We are very careful about obtaining an artist's consent, and the artists in the programs have been his students for many years and prefer that he demonstrate his thoughts and techniques on their painting. Kind regards, David and Connie
