Painting rocks using a plastic card

A gorge with a stream, painted several times before showing how I scrape the paint to create in impression of rocks. Effective and quick!

    Thanks so much for this one, Dave. It's the best demonstration I've ever seen of making rocks with the card, which-as Madi pointed out-looks easy but isn't. Your follow-up work in putting additional color and shadows into the rocks was very helpful, too.

    Thanks for watching, BC1, glad you like this one. You can't do this with all papers but works very well with the cheap Fabriano 130lb practise paper. It works well because the wet washes stay on the surface for longer than the papers that are almost like blotting paper and soak the washes up straight away,making them hard to scrape out.

    Outstanding painting Dave, those rocks look amazing, I know you say don't over do them but the more you put in the better you make it look, another thing I have noticed is since you've been spraying your palette and storing it in a zip-lock bag your colours look more intense and vibrant more so with the lemon yellow and green mixes or am I imagining things ? 3 paintings in 1 day what a treat, thanks Dave

    Ah, Dave. I gotta git me one of those credit cards you use. Just hold it over paper, give it a shake and watch rocks fall out of it. Yeah. Gotta git one. You're good with that hake and credit card. Darn good with that limited palette. Why, I wonder , is it that the British landscape artists that use the hake seen to prefer that same 7 color palette? For it's simplicity but at the same time it's broad range of colors possible...especially suited to landscapes?

  • @DaveUsherArt

    @DaveUsherArt

    The main reason for the palette some of is use goes back to Ron Ranson, who took up watercolour painting after being made redundant at age 50.He was inspired by Edward Seago, one of our greatest landscape artists, died around 1968. Ron came up with a palette of 7 colours that mostly suited the British landscape. I came across him after seeing a VHS tape of him doing a demonstration with the hake and his now famous palette. This was in 1982.The scraping out with the credit card came several years later at a club demo by John Darlisson. We have a Ron Ranson Disciples Facebook page which is open to everyone. It was started by, my Patron at the time, American, Matthew Clemens. 😁

    @@DaveUsherArt Thank you for the information, Dave. I've watched what little there is about Ron Ransom on KZread but never realized he was the originator of the palette. I was fortunate enough to get to spend two weeks in Lincolnshire in 2005. We did a lot of driving and I got to see a lot of the lake district. Windermere (sp) is a beautiful lake. I even got to see where some of my favorite pipe tobacco is processed. That palette works well here in Indiana too. I'm gonna put together a plein air painting set using that palette credit cards included. If I'm lucky maybe I have a card that's full of rocks. 😀 I really like to watch you paint. You're so relaxed about it. That's what I need now. My wife has terminal cancer and I get so messed up in the head thinking about what's going to happen.
