Hi! My name is Shannon and I own a little business called Black Sheep House where I refinish furniture. This business provides our family with extra income and is a major creative outlet for me! I started this channel to help others to make their homes more beautiful and to help other furniture painters learn tips to increase their skills and make more money in less time! I'm glad you're here!
This tutorial works great on ANY furniture from solid wood to cheap laminate or even plastic and metal!!
I take you with me step by step as I clean, prime and paint this laminate Ikea dresser!
Products used:
Dawn dish soap and water
Zinnser BIN SHELAC based primer (zinnser carries a few differnt primers, the one I use in this video is the SHELAC based one. I use the water based one in other videos too so they are both good but if you don't want to sand and want good adhesion you should use the shelac based one. (best to use shellac based for laminate) ***water based version is ok if you sand w/220 grit sand paper first
Behr Premium Plus ULTRA in Satin finish (my go to paint!!!) easy to find and cost effective 👏
**(I also recommend General Finishes Milk paint if you want to upgrade any furniture painting project but it’s a little more 💲😉)
ZIBRA brushes are my favorite
High density foam roller pack 4 inch

Zinsser BIN shellac based primer works great. I greatly appreciate the time you took to produce this video. I have been wanting to repaint the laminate tops on my dressers. I'm very happy to see that I don't have to scuff sand the laminate tops, because once you sand laminate, there is no going back. Thank you and keep up the good work.

I absolutely agree! I needed to paint a dark oak, glossy wood beam, and the ONLY way to get it white was to use Zinzer primer. Using several coats of Rustoleum primer had left nothing more than a yellowish, bleed through mess! Only one coat of Zinzer and it was so bright white, it was nearly blinding lol

@@blacksheephouse I am all new to this and it is only the second thing I have painted with chalk paint. The first thing was an antique doll cradle with spindles and oh boy were the spindles ever miserable with thick goopy paint to contend with. So far I am not seeing the benefit with all the trouble with brush marks either. I scuff-sanded and sealed the dresser with shellac. I am not very sensitive to smells so I don't want to take a chance not knowing where the dresser came from. I expect going forward I will take these steps regardless so chalk paint isn't necessary I guess to skip sanding and primer. I have heard great things about General Finishes. Thanks so much for the kind and great advice!!

I think this technique might work, except I cannot find shellac primer in the local Home Depot. they have a Kilz Restoration Water-based Primer that says it has same performance as shellac. do you think it could work? Also I was thinking on using the Behr Cabinet, Door and Trim Enamel, which the salesman says is the best thing? Would love your opinion. Bin shellac is a must on everything. It's an unskippable step, don't waste time with anything else. It's not a secret, but a go to product for literally everyone who knows about conversions. Edit - I've never seen someone using a mini roller as a sponge. I instead recommend getting a better leveling paint for your topcoat such as urethane satin enamel from Sherwin. It's far far far more durable and the stippling pretty much disappears. You could also rent a sprayer or borrow one, or use an hvlp gun if you have a compressor. Best way to eliminate brush strokes is to spray. If that's not an option, you can also try a latex extender with the emerald trim paint.

@Jennifer B I've been painting houses for 20+years. We've also done more trim conversion than you can imagine(it's a big trend eliminating wooden trim and doors converting it to white). I've also painted more than my fair share of kitchen cabinets and all sorts of builtin cabinets/shevles/dressers, fireplaces(both metal and brick conversion), wooden beams, and even a few tubs and surrounds as well as car rims, decks, metal and wooden fences ect ect ect. Is it possible to get a factory finish without a sprayer? Yes, if you spend enough time buffing and polishing and sanding with extremely fine sandpaper you could in theory achieve similar results to a sprayer on non-intricate flat surfaces. Is it worth the time and effort to do it like that? No way. You'd be shocked how efficient an hvlp sprayer can be or an airless with fflp tips(fine finish low pressure). At some point you have to value your time more than the miniscule amount of paint wasted by spraying or the additional steps required to hopefully get it to that level a different way. The last conversion I did had over 60 shelves and door fronts, it was a long process even with my sprayers, to do them by hand is a massive waste of time I wouldn't wish upon anybody. To attempt to perfect them with minirollers and brushes is a task I literally don't even want to think about. I had everything I could stacked outside ontop of drops and my extension ladder, a small spray booth near by, and I layed down coat after coat after coat til everything was done (air drying between coats). With this dresser, if you had it outside on a drop you could spray a perfect layer on it within minutes.

@@AlexKunstar that was a lot and I’m definitely not reading all of that, maybe you missed my point. Maybe you are an expert but you must not be very familiar with this particular content creator. She does not like to use a paint sprayer as she states many times throughout her videos. She makes videos based on her personal preferences and shows people how to do her technique which does not include using a paint sprayer so you giving that advice is not very useful even if you think it’s the best. People are not watching her content for paint sprayer tips.

@@jenniferb8145 if you had read my original comment it also gave tips on painting when a sprayer isn't an option (using latex extenders and urethane trim enamel with better self leveling properties). I'm also adding a professional finishers observations on what is required to take it up to the levels of a factory finish. Which is something she points out in other videos as well, that this process cannot achieve the same quality as a sprayed finish. This comment isn't to address her process, it's to give better alternatives to others, or at least get them to not be intimidated by sprayers. I just love to paint, and love watching people paint. If this is her comfort zone keep going. There are much faster ways.

Also it costs as much as a QT of the liquid stuff and wasn't enough for a bookshelf. When I did the second coat with the liquid, it barely used 10% of the can. Don't make my mistake. Also definitely get a high density foam roller. That thing rocks for uniform spread

Do I prime over it then paint (I don't think I'll use a chalk paint next time). I have other larger pieces of furniture that I would like to paint white or a lighter color but after this experience I'm kinda scared. Advice please.

Give it a light sand and then use the shellac white or clear primer first, you may need to do two coats, after that you can use any paint you want. Shellac based primer is the only thing that will block bleed through like you mentioned

Hey Sandra, you can definitely get a shellac based paint in the UK, maybe a different brand but anything shellac based will block bleedthrough best. Second best for bleed through is any oil based paint ❤️ also, unless you have a red wood you should be good to go with any old regular primer, even water based. I rarely have to use a heavy duty print unless I’m working on mahogany or something.

Usually people will either use a clear top coat or wax. So whichever you choose will be the last step. I prefer a matte polycrylic topcoat for almost all my pieces unless it’s a table then I use oil based polyurethane bc it’s so durable

Depends what sheen you go with on the paint, the higher the sheen the more durability. I prefer a matte finish so I generally go with a matte water based polyurethane. You can also check out my one step paint recipe here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3WExpV_Y62dqMo.html

If it is water base primer, add water. (BIN primer is water base I believe). But they say not to add tap water to the can because it can damage the paint. Furniture artists I have watched recommend distilled water if you chose to add water to the can. Though it is best to add it to the paint you have poured. You can also mist your brush with water.

Hey there! Bin comes in 3 types of primer (that I know of), oil based, shellac based and water based versions. I use different types on different projects in my videos ❤️ whatever the can says you can use to clean your brushes up with is usually what people use to thin it, so denatured alcohol for the shellac based, water for the water based or mineral spirits for oil based.
