painting COLD SKINTONES on miniatures: Masterclass with Roman Lappat

In this second part of the masterclass, Roman Lappat teaches you how to paint skin on a 75 mm fantasy miniature using a sketching approach. This project, based on the Art of Brom and distributed by Mindwork Studio, focuses on diorama and display miniatures, not Warhammer or wargaming figures. The video covers the basic skin paintwork. The next part will show how to finish the sketch, including the ghost spirit. Enjoy and share your love for miniature art!

Hi Roman I've been a fan of yours for a very long time, devoured all your tutorials on massive voodoo over the years. I love how much you talk about the importance of creating atmosphere, this is something I've taken into my professional life as an architect too and has been so helpful. Many model painters around now speak about technique, but very few talk about the actual artistic approach and thinking. I think you would really enjoy the work of the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor (particularly Therme Vals) and his writings on the subject of atmosphere. Thanks so much for helping me more than you could know!

I am very happy to read such kind words of gratitude. I am thankful to you and appreciate the time you took to write them. I am happy when I can inspire. Thanks for pointing me to Peter Zumthor, I will have a look. Thank you for your feedback! Often with such kind words I am speechless and do not know what to say, except: Arigato! Many thanks!

thank you - this has opened my eyes to a totally different approach to painting. I like this. makes approaching figures like this far less scary. to let the figure slowly be discovered - wonderful. much of my life was spent in performing arts, as a lecturer and director. I just, as I was writing this comment, realised your technique totally mirrors my approach to directing a play and to choreography. I never over did detailed work on the text before starting. then as rehearsals progressed, the text and its layers were discovered in the interplay between the text, the performer and my overall vision. many of the nuances were only brought to light late in the process. to try and start with all the details planned killed my full creativity (and sometimes that of my performers), it also left little room for discovering a new layer and adapting an insight into a too fixed idea was hard to impossible. Now I see with your amazing work and style the key to unlocking the fear I have of approaching some of my waiting figures for painting. we all have different ways of working - no one method is 100% 'the one' for everyone - but I now see this is the one that will suite the way my brain works. thank you so much!

One point of improvement related to video editing/filming. In the beginning when you are mixing colors on your palette, the top half of the palette is off-camera so we can't see some of the colors that you are grabbing. That said, thank you for filming this and sharing with us. Given that you don't have a lot of experience with editing, it just means that I appreciate it more that you have taken the time to do this.

Thank you for the more detailed insight into your workflow. It was more loose and flowing than many painters that I've seen. It made me think that perhaps I overthink my own approach to painting. Also thank you for the play list on the last video. I'm already familiar with Heilung and Wardruna, but found some new stuff to chill to while I paint 👍

Don't we all overthink stuff. I decided to try not to with painting. I might do before I paint, while I plan in my head, but while painting I want to be in the moment and flow. Sometimes it happens. In this series you will see me overthink my progress too when I try to match the original to create a tribute piece.

Looks great Roman. I’ve discovered that RAL 8000 serves as an excellent base coat colour for skin. For the second glaze, I blend in either a pink-tan or a red-brown, selecting the shade based on the specific skin tone I aim to achieve

No worries, there are no silly questions: Well, I for my part see miniature painting similar to canvas painting. As best as I can I want to work my way from rough to detail in the full picture of my canvas. Sometimes due a base or scene it is not possible, but here it is. I hope my answer is satisfiying :)
