Painting clouds using the dry brush technique
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Painting clouds becomes a lot easier when you use the dry brush technique. This means you don't have to thin your paint down with medium. Dutch artist Janhendrik Dolsma often applies this technique in certain stages of his paintings. He shows how in his oil painting 'Beach Pole'.
Dolsma (1950) is an expert painter of clouds, beaches, dunes and of course the ocean. On his KZread channel he shares a lifetime of painting experience in short tutorial videos with an emphasis on painting clouds. His full length tutorials (over 60 minutes) have found their way to buyers all over the world. Full tutorials can be found here: www.paintingskies.com/video/
Dolsma participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, Spain, Belgium and the USA.

Yes, it's a very useful technique indeed. Warm colors in the foreground, cooler colors receding into the background. In clouds, as well as in the landscape.
Whilst proficient in many art forms I have never had cause to paint clouds seriously till now and only due to a particular commission. Nice tutorial on this technique, good sir.. Most importantly, I'm sorry for your feline loss.. may Alphonse rest in peace.

is the bottom layer still wet when clouds applied?
@PaintingSkies1
4 жыл бұрын
No, it's dry. The bottom layer somehow always shimmers through the top layers (at least it does when you're using transparant layers like I do). This helps create the feeling that the clouds are really in front of the blue sky. I sometimes paint the clouds in a wet on wet in a blue sky, mostly in my oil on paper sketches.

(4:11) This looks very contemporary. Maybe that's a swear word for you, but could be an interesting path to explore. The flat beach, and sea with high rising clouds. Visible contrast and I prefer this.
@PaintingSkies1

Thanks for your comment. There is a certain beauty in the sober composition at 4:11 and it's more contemporary (not a swearword for me, by the way), I agree. But in the end I'm drawn to making a realistic painting, that's where my heart is...

Thank you for the tip, I’ll try it next time.
I sort of use dry brush technique myself in pleners and my works where i want to express feelings/memories in one attempt, where i almost dont use turpentine or very few. Howeever what bothers me is that those paintings even after having surface dried keep the smell of paints, even after months. It is not a strong scent but when keeping few of those paintings in locked room makes it very noticable after entering the room. How does it work with your paitnings where you used dry brush technique? i mean, do the smell of the paint remains for a long time even if its dried?I sort of put the paint in impasto aswell, not everywehre but still...
@PaintingSkies1
Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's pretty annoying. I only use undiluted paint in a few areas in a painting, so I can't say I have met this problem.If your entire canvas is covered with impasto paint, that's a different story though. Oil paint takes a long time to dry, up to a year, so my guess is that the smell will remain that long. Maybe you should try acrylics for your impasto work. It dries really quick and doesn't smell as much as oil paint.
@GoreTheSummoner
Жыл бұрын
@@PaintingSkies1 i use oils specificly for its longer drying time, i mean, acryl dries too fast for me so i cant use it the way id like to, oils are more suitable for me. my teacher told me today that it is possible that some of the scent together with a bit of humidity settled in the back side of the canvas because i kept my works in basemant after painting was done, so it didnt have the proper airing.. i will see how it will work with my next painting with proper airing and drying, maybe it will help. or ill wait one year :) or try to add just a bit of turpentine to each of colors, but not too much. so many things to learn.. :) have a good day.
@PaintingSkies1
Жыл бұрын
@@GoreTheSummoner Yes, in that case acrylics are no alternative. I'm not sure turpentine will help either. It has quite a strong smell itself. Your teachers advice seems sound. Hope it works!
