I watched several How-to-Paint-C:ouds videos. THis was my favorite. Detailed, professional results. Not to complicated or too simple; perects. For most paintings--as the artist suggests.

An excellent video, you have that magic touch though. I have found an Aquafine large fan brush for the blending is ideal for most things, and no fibres coming out. What make of white paint do you use, I have the water mixable type and I think the white sets too quickly, when it's time to blend it's not possible to use such a light touch. Great vid so thanks for doing them. U.K.

Fix that brush. Hold brush with hair pointed upwards. Put small drops of crazy glue at the base just where hairs meet the metal strap. Go with glue around the whole perimeter. Use VERY LITTLE glue in each step. Flooding with glue will make glue go towards the tip of hair and make the whole brush unusable. If needed repeat the whole thing but only after the crazy glue from the first round is fully dried. If in doubt about this way of fixing brushes then maybe build some confidence practicing on old or cheap brushes. Good luck.

Hi, Malak! Thanks for your question! For this one, I used two parts Ultramarine Blue to one part Cerulean Blue. Mix with Titanium White to create a few shades that work from dark to light. Start painting at the top of your canvas with the darker blue and work the lighter shades of blue below it. After the canvas is covered in paint, use X shaped strokes between the shades of blue to blend the colors. Finally, for the last step, the same Bob Ross blending brush I used works great for unifying the colors to create a smooth gradiation. :)

The sky should be dry before you begin, but you should be able to finish the clouds in one go. If your colors are traveling too much as you work, you might be using too much paint. Less is more. :) Good luck! I'm glad you're painting again!!

The whole video is edited for time, but I just added a little more of a highlight to the tops of the clouds using the same technique that you saw. :)

Thanks really this was really helpful! I am a total beginner. Are you doing this on a dry background? ( pretty sure you are) does this work better wet on wet?

  • @DevynSamara

I do it on a dry background. You could do it on a wet background if you'd like! I have before, but my only irritation with this method is that you blend so much for these diffused clouds that sometimes it can disrupt the gradient of blue you have "behind" the cloud. Plus, I had to make it a 2 step process (let it dry and come back to it) to really bring the whites out of the clouds. :) Thanks for your question!

It's just a super pale pink color that you can mix up yourself with a whole lot of Titanium White and a bluer-based red paint that you might have. :)
