When I was a little girl, my best friend and I were painting our nails and her dad who was 6 foot seven, saw that we were doing it wrong, so he took the tiny little brush and in his giant hands and did our nails for us. it’s one of my favourite memories

In my cosmetology school they tell you to do one base coat, two for color, and one top. They also tell you to push slightly to the cuticle to make it easier and then brush to the end.

Maybe you are talking to/watching the wrong kind of people. These advices are as old as nail polish itself and its kinda repetitive. I just came here for the cute color ahaha

This is how I do it and trust me, no one understands how easy and good this iss!

Another tip is to rub off one side of the brush inside the bottle opening, this ensures that you only have polish on one side of your brush and you will not have too much polish. (which also causes issues)

You can also start further back from the cuticle and push the brush up to meet the cuticle. That always keeps me from flooding, if I start at the cuticle I always flood it.

That’s a really good brush in that polish. A lot of brushes won’t let you do this method, or at least, don’t do it as well lol. Great color too. I’m such a purple girlie, it’s my fav.

Argh! Yes! I can't stand crappy brushes! The worst ones (for ME) are those really fat ones that, no matter how hard I try, wind up painting my nails and the skin surrounding.

For sure! Humbly, I think flooded cuticles automatically make a manicure look unprofessional and just bad. Same goes for having polish on the skin, even the slightest bit. ❤

Ah that means a lot, thank you! A lot of the times I wish things were explained to me better so I tried to do my best to break things down into steps and communicate it the way I wish I’d had it communicated to me if makes sense :)

Yessssss. I tell my daughter all the time not to continue to paint over and over trying to cover every spot bc most polishes will set evenly or level out like you said!

To help with the cuticle running, I start a little above the cuticle and then later once there’s less product on the brush push down towards the cuticle

This is how we learned in nail tech. You are absolutely correct

Tbh I’ve given up completely on not painting my skin, I just let it dry and peel it off my skin later 😭 Ironically, those nails end up being the one with the best edges

I’m a nail tech & this is right! The instructors taught us to do 3 passes, but I always do 4 bc I think that it evens it all out. Also, stay away from those cuticles, ladies..🌹

Three passes for me and my favourite brush are opi wide brushes. This is a practiced must especially with metallics as you will definitely notice the striations with each stroke.

OMG!!! Wide nail polish brushes are THE BEST!!!! When I 1st started out in Manicure school, all we had were those teeny, tiny brushes & we HAD to be able to polish all 10 nails, using those little brushes, in 3 strokes to pass our State Boards!! LMAO I know those wide brushes had to of been invented by a stressed out manicure-student, hahahahhaa. ☺️☺️ Once you learn & master the 3 stroke method tho, you will never forget how to do it!! 😊

i learned this as a young girl, i loved painting my own nails and even mastered the cheetah print and marbling technique. i stopped painting my nails all that much and that kinda makes me sad. but you’ve definitely inspired me to start painting my nails again

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you. I spend so much money on my nails. Even during covid, I tried to figure out what I was doing wrong... My nail polish was always coming out bubbling. No matter what products I use no matter how much preparation and I think this is exactly what I needed to learn❤.

Before my wedding I went to a nail salon to get my natural nails done. They bubbled it! So the morning of our 10 AM wedding, I was re-doing them at my mom's kitchen counter. Ugh!

Most people find "capping" the polish like what she does here helps maintain it better (along with a strong base coat polish to help it better adhere to the nail, and a good protective clear top coat polish that you might add another layer of after 2 to 5 days later depending on your nail needs), but for me personally with my too flexible nails, I find capping increases chipping and so me just using a good base and top coat and avoiding capping works better for me. I try not using my nails as tools but i do constantly touch things and too often wind up scraping the tips of my nails against stuff (anything from surfaces to my skin or scalp).

@@mrs.perfectly.fine. not lucky, I picked it and changed my name to it because my abusive selfish parents thought it was a good thing to name me after my mother because apparently they didn't care about the confusion that would cause with like everything in my life. Plus she kept treating me like an appendix instead of a whole person of my own, so good riddance to my old name. I picked my new name because of it reminding me of the Alexandria library, but like more normal.

I’ve been doing my own nails since 2018 or so and I’m still a teenager but my biggest tip is getting a good top coat. It changes everything for me. Sometime doing designs on your nail can look kind of splotchy but when you put a top coat over it, it hides all the baby imperfections. But it’s important not to put too much top coat on because if can make your nail look too thick and Cakey and it takes forever to dry. ❤

There are however topcoats designed to be "thick", they will flow every bit as easily as normal topcoats so it's not too little solvent but just a thicker formula. They usually have "3D" or "gel shine" (despite not being gel formula) in the name. I love using those sort of top coats on shimmer or glitter polishes because they make the light bounce around even more and just elevate the glitteriness to the max, and I am a sucker for sparklies.

I’ve started doing this, and she is 100% correct. Painting my nails is a lot less stressful now. Also, building up thin layers, instead of a thick layer or two, makes your nails dry faster and look more even.

This is really good advice. I didn’t really think about the amount of pressure placed on the brush. It’s so obvious, but I’m usually focused on the where I’m placing the bristles on the nail, not how I’m doing it. I can’t wait to try this.
