    This is testimony not only to the quality of Meguiar's, but also to Jaguar. The X308s had an 10-step priming/painting process (source: 1998 Jaguar brochure) that was most surely best-in-class...very generous with clearcoat (unlike most of today's models) which makes the finish quite "forgiving". I bought a 1-owner 2002 Vanden Plas with 45k miles, and spent 40 hours in my own multi-stage clay-bar/cleaner/polish/wax/sealer process (including Meguiar's products) with stunning results. I have classic show cars too, but the X308s have the best factory paint I have ever seen.

    Question for you guys, I've seen the Meguiar's M699 Deep Crystal Top Coat on the shelves of the bay. Is that a Si02 maintenance spray/booster? If so, can it be used over any ceramic coating or does it just work with the M688 coating? Also, what's the durability like (6-8 months like most SiO2 sprays)? Sorry for the question bombing but can't find many info on this particular product. Recently found your channel while researching Meguiar's products. Great, clear explanations and tips, plus nice filming and editing. Keep it up! That's XJR looks bonkers 👌🏻

Once I have cleaned and clayed the car. Do I need anything additional to remove any old protection that is on there or will the act of polishing it, remove what is left ready for the new wax?

    If you wanted to add a ceramic coating to the paint is that right after the wax or before?

  • @AP-bb6fz

    @AP-bb6fz

    5 жыл бұрын

    Ceramic coating is added after polishing. There is really no need for wax if your car is coated. The coating will lose it´s hydrophobic qualities if you slap a layer of wax op top of it. If you plan to wax your car, might as well save the money and not put a coating on it. And if you put a coating on top of wax it will not even stick to your car. A car needs to be fully degreased before adding a wax or coating for it to stick as it should.

    I am aware what wax does. From your website" A common misconception among some customers is that when the beading stops there is no longer any wax protection on the paint. This is not the case. Some waxes like our NXT Tech Wax 2.0 contain water-beading properties, but they do not last as long as the wax protection. So the beading may stop after a few weeks, but the wax protection lasts for many weeks after this." So the Wax can have a limited beading time, do your other products top up that beading time?

    My rule I stand by while waxing: after claying/compound & polishing is complete to my liking. I wax the panels with adequate amount of wax- NOT excessive. I can always go back and do another light coat to my liking. Wax the larger horizontal panels first, hood,roof & trunk. Then finish the other panels- leaving the bumpers and below the belt line in the panels last( from your knee height down on the doors I call belt line) these usually are areas of concerns. Before waxing below the belt line; above this area should be dried along with the larger panels done first off- remove wax Wax bumpers and below the belt. Take the vehicle in the sun and completely remove the wax from panels and trim. Open door jams- I typically spray them with a vinyl cleaner/conditioner prior to add to ease of removal of dried wax.

    Lewis72. It looked like it was aired out. So who knows what the ride height really is. As for the wheels. It's the owners preference. He may not like what you would choose either. That's what's great about cars & the people who own them. We get so many different looks. This car looks great. Maybe not yours or my taste. But Great!

    @@ltsgarage7780 I would chose OEM i.e. leave it as standard or at most put OEM kit on it that was available on that car. My guess is that the engineers at Jaguar knew more about the car and its ride and handling than someone that was impressed with some big, shiny wheels.

    @@lewis72 but this is what I'm saying. This car is exactly how the owner likes it. It doesn't matter how Jaguar or anyone else feels or likes. It's his car. If he wants it on air-ride & big shiny wheels. That's his choice & rite to have it. That's what is great about the world we live in. We all get to have our own choices. Let him have his. Don't condemn what he likes. That's all I'm saying. By saying that his choices are wrong. I'm sure someone out there would think yours are wrong. Who is really to say who's right or who's wrong?? Certainly not me!! I like the air-ride. Not much on the wheels. But I dont care what he runs. I'm not much on this new of Jaguar. I like the 70's model XL's. But once again that's me. I run a 2005 Mercedes Benz CLK500 Cabriolet now. Purchased it brand new. I'm down from having 4 cars to just this one. 1. Mercedes CLK500 2. Cadillac XLR V 3. Two Acura NSX's T. Black on Black, Silverstone Grey. I got really sick for several years. Then a very bad motorcycle accident. Sold off all me cars except the practical one. And sold off all me Harley's. Blew a front tire on my Hayabusa. That got rid of that bike. What I'm saying is we all have our own Taste in vehicles. We don't need to tell someone else what should be done to their vehicles. Just tell them "Nice car!" Leave it at that.

    @@ltsgarage7780 I didn't say it wasn't his choice, my OP was "WTF is it doing on those wheels and that ride height ?" which was questioning the reason behind his choice, not trying to deny it ! "By saying that his choices are wrong. I'm sure someone out there would think yours are wrong. Who is really to say who's right or who's wrong??" - Well, I'd guess as Jaguar designed the car, Jaguar, which is what I stated. You can't go driving round in a classic car like that with stupid wheels on it ad not get ridiculed. I'm English, that's what we do. Furthermore, I was a development engineer at Jaguar Cars for 9+ years. Don't you do banter where you live ?

    @@lewis72 I don't. I'm one of those that looks for the good in what people do to their vehicles. Like, Why would he chose what he choose. Look at it from his mindset. Another words. Have an open mind. Not look at everything with a closed mind. Thinking All of my choices are right. They're not.

    Way too much work involved in this process. I grew up detailing. My dad owned the first auto detail shop in Pasadena Ca...1966-2003. We did it all...Polish and Wax, Interior, Steam and Painted engines, overspray removal, color sanding etc...we did it all. HIGH lUSTER PRODUCTS are far better than Meguire's. Meguires is okay if you don't have access to professional-grade products. That buffer (if that's what you want to call it) looks like a 1500 rpm. To do the job correctly you need at least 2700 rpm. If you know what you are doing you don't need to tape the edges. Proper technique will leave no swirls, diapers... no cobwebs. Everything these guys use can be purchased over the counter. Non-pro products. Professionals use professional-grade products, equipment, and materials. I have a 2000 Jaguar XJR. The paint is 20 years old. I've probably polished it 4 times since new. It looks like it's just been sprayed. Never washed with soap. All I do is a wipe down with a wet cloth and then dry it with a dry one, occasional full rinse, and pro-grade liquid wax. I get it, most of you have no idea what a real Auto Detailer does because there are so few. It really is a skill. These guys are trying hard, but trust me they have no idea.
