Paint like Richard Diebenkorn Ocean Park Series - American abstract painting

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Richard Diebenkorn is a famous American West Coast painter. He made a series of abstract paintings called The Ocean Park series. I like abstract art so I looked at his painting to be able to create my own Richard Diebenkorn Ocean Park series style painting. I show you my process and how I find my composition. At every next step I look at Richard Diebenkorn paintings. For my colors I also look at photographs of the Santa Monica Ocean Park area.
The video about the artwork on the wall behind me: • Paint like Mary Heilma...
Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH...
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

@@ImperfectPaintings I plan to paint a piece in his style. Your video gave me some clear ideas of how to approach it. I just ordered the book you showed. It should help, too. Albert, I really like the way you analyze paintings. Your observations are "spot on" as we say here in the US. Keep it up!

Yet another excellent lesson. I knew of RD for years and actually had the exact same book that you showed. Interestingly your ability to deconstruct and simplify made it so much easier to understand his work and made the book so much more accessible and valuable. Thank you so much. Since you asked, I still like to experience your take on cubism.

Dear Albert, thank you for you truly excellent tutorials. I am a huge fan of both Diebenkorn and Hockney, and that is how I stumbled upon your channel. We seem to be interested in many of the same painters - I also mainly paint abstract and I adore vivid colors. If you want to, I would love to see your take on Cubism. - “How to paint like a Cubist” (in a colorful way). Another suggestion would be on Fauvism. Another yet on Bauhaus. Again, thank you for your great work. Your tutorials rock! Love from Sweden.

Thanks, Barbara. I'm not an expert on Diebenkorn's techniques. So I can't answer your question. What I often mention is this: just do. So, in case you have an idea, like his techniques, just try it yourself. Maybe you're right. Maybe you learn something new. Anyway, have fun. Albert

Cool, I think you got the colours and compositon, but as you said so yourself, he took a lot of time on each painting, he usually painted layers over and over for years , so it would be impossible to trully make a diebenkorn painting in one or two sessions, and I think this is an important aspect of his work, how he added texture and interest by adding and covering and scratching.

Hi Barbara, thanks. I never intent to copy, it's more looking at his artwork in a lighthearted way, how could you make one, just by looking at your own surroundings. The enjoyment of painting and when interested, educate yourself about his artwork, just like you did. And enjoy looking and making abstract art, what a lot of people want but have difficulties with. Hope this helps or watch some more videos on my channel to get it 😁. Bye, Albert

Hi Mary Beth, thanks. I use transparent paint. The effect is that when I paint blue over yellow the part where they overlap the color will appear green, because I can see through the blue layer and still see the yellow. In case you use opaque paint, you will only see the top-layer. When you check your paint tube/bottle there will a mention of what paint you have. I use Winsor & Newton Galeria acrylics. Check their site for more specific info. Hope this helps. Albert
