If I had to introduce someone to metal, with all the overwhelmingly different variations out of there, Painkiller would be a solid choice. Even if there are so many more modern variants of metal that sound completely different, it has an iconic aesthetic that will never die, so long as metalheads live.

"Painkiller" is more of JP trying a new sound out for the 90s. Their classic sound can be found more in songs like The Ripper, Island of Domination, Tyrant, Dissident Aggressor, Invader, Starbreaker, Evening Star, Beyond the Realms of Death, Delivering the Goods, Metal Gods, United, Solar Angels, Heading Out to the Highway, You've Got Another Thing Comin', Electric Eye, Freewheel Burning, Some Heads Are Gonna Roll...to name a few.

@@ferox965 I remember it coming out too. And i thought, "Here's Priest following another trend like they did with Turbo. Thank God it's better than "Ram It Down'". There's a reason they were touring with Megadeth and Testament, which was a great tour BTW. Painkiller is a good album but nowhere near their top 5, and I'd take Firepower over it any day.

This was basically the introduction of Priest's new drummer Scott Travis. Scott's previous band was Racer X, an LA shred-metal band led by guitarist Paul Gilbert (who later started Mr. Big). Racer X was very Priest influenced, their singer Jeff Martin was friends with Rob Halford (singer of Judas Priest), and they even performed an unreleased Priest song "Heart Of A Lion." This song is almost like part 2 of a Racer X/Judas Priest superhero trilogy, starting with Racer X's Motor Man and ending with a reunited Racer X's Superheroes.

Most metal bands today owe their metallic sound to Priest...the first band to exit the blues sound, and go true metal! This song is good..fast, powerful...but doesn’t define the band! 70’s and 80’s priest is the best!

Awesome!! Love this song!Judas Priest has a lot of great songs! Glenn Tipton and K.K.Downing were a force to be reckoned with. The way they would go back and forth with the guitars and they would be on fire! I was lucky to see them twice in the 80s. K.K. left in 2011 and Glenn Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson`s Disease in 2018 and they should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 and they will be celebrating 50 years also in 2020.

One time, fresh out of Marine Corps boot camp, in 1983 at a Hilton Hotel, I saw some guy in a dirty tee-shirt jamming a lot of noise on top of his shoulder out of a boom box in Glen Falls, NY as we were visiting nearby Lake George. I lturned to my brother and said, "Look at that dirtbag". He said, "That's Rob Halford!" I didn't believe him. The next day we woke up to see a Judas Priest tour bus in the parking lot. My brush with greatness. Lol! More Rush soon please.

"Breaking the law" was released on 1980, while the album "Painkiller" was published a decade later; next year Judas Priest will celebrate the 50th anniversary! One of the things I love the most about this band is their ability to change and evolved through time, absorbing other's music and at the same time defining a genre. I really love your reaction, and I suggest you to listen and analyze their evolution via three of their most successful albums: from "Sad wings of destiny" (1976) Victims of changes and The Ripper, from "Screaming for vengeance" The Helion/electric eye, Screaming for vengeance and Prisoner of your eyes, while if you want to keep going with their trash metal side, from "Painkiller" I recommend you Between the hammer and the anvil, Battle hymn/One shot at glory and All guns blazing. Sorry for the long comment, see you guys!

Actually Judas Priest as a band formed in the late 60s. I'm surprised that with you guy's penchant for 70s music you haven't been turned on to the songs they came out with in the 70s. Beyond the Realms of Death would be a good song for that and really showcases Rob Halford's vocal range. Unleashed in the East - Live in Japan was a live album of theirs that came out in 1979. One of my favorite metal albums without a doubt. It's a collection of nine of their 70s songs played even heavier and faster. As a teenager I was listening to Floyd, Zepplin, etc. when I got my hands on that album. That night I put that album on the turntable, put on my headphones, dropped the needle and kicked back on my bed and closed my eyes. The first song Exciter comes on and I thought damn this is fast, aggressive, intense and crushing (for that time). Then Running Wild comes on and I'm drawn in even more. This stuff was so different, such a departure from what I was listening to as a teenager at that time I couldn't help but get hooked. But the next song Sinner is what did it for me. That song made me Metal for Life. Here's a live version of it from the early 80s: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hX1lvMWCksvZnc4.html which is great for a live performance but the Unleashed in the East version has a better sound quality............
