I’m in the US and have AS personally. I appreciate the doctor’s points about mental health and pain being connected, and mentioning how pain carries stigma and impacts us in all aspects of our lives. I try to manage flares with heat, TENS and massage. It’s a lifelong journey. We need more educated specialist like this Dr. Will check out the book! Thanks!

Missed the questions i wanted to ask ive been useing ibuprofen as my preferred choice for pain management, after a resent bloodtest my GP has told me my kidney function is blow that it should be and apparently this is caused by useing ibuprofen. Does every kind of pain med cause these issues?

Hi Kevin, different medications have a different potential impact on kidney function. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen) do carry this risk. There are other pain medications that have less impact on kidney function. Your GP should be able to discuss the options with you and prescribe if needed. However, it may be helpful to ask to be referred to a pain clinic/consultant to discuss long-term options (as well as non-medication options) and also make your rheumatologist aware, as they may consider recommending other treatments. I hope that's helpful ~Zoë
