Paganini: Caprice No. 5 (Shlomo Mintz)

Музыка

This recording was converted from an old VHS, so not the best video quality.
Sad to say that the 24-etude set was not complete on the cassette. There were only Nos. 1-11., 13, 14, 17, 20 and 24.
Check out young master's incredible technique and the sound (especially for staccati, spiccati and ricochets), musically also intelligent. Recorded in 1981.

    For those of you who don’t play violin: what’s absolutely breathtaking about this is not even how fast the left hand is moving, but maintaining that very crisp, clean sautille bouncing bow throughout the piece, despite all the string changes. That is some serious right hand bowing technique!

    According to my calculations, in the Agitato part (from 0.32 to 1.46) Shlomo played 67 bars with 16 semiquavers each, i.e. a total o 67x16 = 1072 notes in 74 seconds. A speed of 14.49 notes per second. This about Paganini speed ( 12 to 15 nps ) when playing Presto movements... Phantastic !

    Very much so, this directly paved the road to the 80's shred, Paganini's 5th cappricce is what Yngwie built his chops on. Paganini was a charmer and a crowd pleaser, ladies were saving ashes from his cigar droppings in their medallions and stuff like that, with him the fandom as we know it today actually started.

  • @GoatMee

    @GoatMee

    +Miguel When asked what were the exercises he built his chops on, Yngwie said he never practiced exercises, instead he played the 5th caprice until he was able to play it properly. He said why waste time on non musical exercises, when you have these classical pieces that cover the full range of techniques one needs to master in order to git gud. So technically, he probably can't play ALL the caprices, but he can definitely play the 5th and probably some others too.

    This is the best command of the violin that I have heard to date by quite a margin, especially the sheer projection, resonance, richness of harmonics, and completeness of the sound not to mention the warmth as well, and this is only the sound,technically, although not nearly so important to myself personally,one can forgive a lot if the sound is larger than life, but in this case the sound and the technique are evenly matched like everything else. To really get the most out of this video, play it at 0.25 speed and really listen and pay attention to all the shifts, look at all the fingerings, etc... It has really been carefully worked out. The shifts on the big scales at The beginning and the end: you will hear how he first slides down with his first finger before putting down the other four as he’s crawling back down the fingerboard. But when he is going fast, you don’t hear it at all. Amazing!
