Padraig Harrington: Performance, alcohol, speed and Irish golf | The Golfer's Journal

Padraig Harrington will be the first to tell you that he wasn’t destined for golf stardom. In fact, he’ll be the first to tell you a lot of things. Like how to pronounce his first name (“Pour-ig”), what separates elite professional golfers from the rank-and-file, and why your on-course goals need more oomph. In this wide-ranging discussion, Harrington and host Tom Coyne dig into the three fundamentals that every golfer should know, unearth the secret to solving Tom’s early extension, and, of course, engage in some Irish links golf chatter.

    PH is absolutely right with his breakdown of the two types of golfers. There is a certain beauty to striking a golf ball well and watching it fly. And to a lot of golfers (maybe the majority) are just happy doing that.

    Padraig is so enthusiastic and generous with his knowledge. As an Irishman in England I try to explain how different the culture is in member clubs in Ireland. He articulates it perfectly. The juniors are not a nuisance, they are the means by which you will beat the club five miles down the coast five years from now. Tomorrow I will be squeezin me bollocks and rubbin out fag ends on the ground with the ball of me right fut. Brilliant pod Tom 💚🔥💚

    What a fantastic interview - thoroughly enjoyed it. Padraig is am amazing golfer and I am subscribed to his excellent channel. Speaking as a 6 handicap I understood al lot of what Padraig was talking about. I used to be one of those golfers who used to just love the feeling of hitting a great shot. I mean let's face it there is nothing in this world better than that! But now that Im older I have learned the art of the short game and have become a great scrambler. I can be swinging the club badly and somehow still manage to get a good score. Which annoys the hell out of my mates lol. But then, when Im on form, I get the bonus of having one or two of those amazing shots as well. Ive always been. decent chipper but I was a terrible terrible putter. I used to see it as boring and so I never scored well even though I could swing great. But now I have become a really good putter and that is what finally got my handicap down.

    Padraig has been my hero for years. He never disappoints, and his recent remarks about how we treated single parent women in Ireland was very brave and correct. In the face of the PGA taking the high moral ground about Saudi, it needed to be pointed out and he fired ahead knowing he would get it in the neck for saying it. My HERO

    I love Paddy, too. Respectfully, though, I think he was incorrect on the single mothers comment. While they were certainly treated horribly, I don't think it was ever a criminal offense to be a single mother in Ireland, nor were they jailed. It is a false equivalency to compare the Ireland's past treatment of single mothers and Saudi Arabia's state sanctioned beheading of gay men (for example).

    respectfully, they were captives for all intents and purposes and had their babies stolen from them. the babies were purchased by and exported to the model of civilisations - USA. This was practiced in Franco's Spain also. The PGA has taken plenty of funding from the Saudis over the years . The PGA Tour were themselves a break-away group from the PGA of America in 1968. I think Paddy's point was dont take moral guidance from a bunch of hypocrites. @@dabaumga

    When Paddy spoke about golf not being something a young man boasted about in the '80's, I had to laugh. I played on both the soccer and golf teams in Austin,Tx in the mid '70s. The TWO most unpopular sports in a high school at that time. If you wanted to play either sport you were on the team! Brought a girl to my room and showed her my Arnie, Jack and Lee posters on the wall and she laughed and said " MY DAD PLAYS GOLF! " with a tone of disgust. My heroes wore white belts and shoes, they were pretty uncool for sure, but I didn't care. Always like Padraig's game and style.

    Paddy, would you aggree, a golf swing is a throwing motion made serve a sports specific purpose? I learned and practiced my arse off at the age of 10 to master the tennis serve. The same exact sequence works in my golf swing but the orientation - direction if motion is different. Instead of jumping up and after the tossed ball, You accelerate downwards with your arms and club, but body works the opposite direction. As a reference, I can every once in a while drive the ball 320 yards during the season, when catching it clean off the sweetspot. And I defenately love the idea of learning the swing thru speed, not the contact. Kids learn it that way! Adults are so frightened to miss the ball, they start to steer the club face at the ball too early in their stroke and cannot square it naturalky.

    Overall golf prices in the US are simply ridiculous. We have a course by me that is really pretty substandard. They want $1800 a year for the green fees on an annual. A few years ago it was $800. This place isn’t a gem either. Back in the day there were more courses in the area, but land prices went up, so a few of the courses were sold to developers. They are neighborhoods now. So the living population increased and the amount of places to play decreased. I think that as the economy gets worse, golf will become less available. It’ll return to a rich person’s game once again.

  • @keego_keego
    @keego_keego7 ай бұрын

    Golf is massively expensive here in ireland. I would be single digits (over 40) with a decent income, but it is still far far too expensive to join most clubs. If the annual sub is 1800, there is joining fee of multiples of that for alot of clubs. It really has taken the game away from a game everyone can play to a game only bank managers and rich people can play
