DRIVING DISTANCE AND SPEED | Paddy's Golf Tip #44 | Padraig Harrington

Спорт

In this lesson, I discuss driving distance, power and everything I know about speed. If you want to hit it further, you have to hit it harder and to do that you have to break a lot of inhibitions.

Huge knowledge of the golf swing. In the best and simplest way possible. His Irish humor keeps the viewer engaged as well. He's even moving on the Potty!! Classic stuff. By telling his viewers the most important factors in order, they know what to concentrate on the most. Paddy is a wonderful athlete as it pertains to golf. There are few players in the game that play "More Freed Up" than Padraig Harrington. To use an old cliche, "He gets out of his own Way." Paddy shows you how to open your body. More importantly he helps you free your mind

A lot very good information to parse in this video but the key to the underlying physics is the idea of swinging into resistance in the downswing with the body and hands to trigger the acceleration of the club head around the hands like the action of cracking a whip-speeding up the hands and grip end of the club in the downswing then abruptly slowing it to trigger the whipping of club head around hands, where most of the club head acceleration before impact occurs. The idea of swinging into resistance with the body to generate club head speed with the hands was mentioned in a 1930s book called “Down To Scratch” by Abe Mitchell. It was the concept trick shot artist Harry Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi) built his unorthodox swing style around and something both Hogan - with his waggle action - and Moe Norman - with his unorthodox grip - also understood intuitively and incorporated into their swings to accelerate their club heads. I started experimenting with the concept about 15 years ago in my mid-50s after retiring, going to work at a course as a starter and being able to practice and play nearly every day. For the previous 20 some years I’d tried to model my swing on Nicklaus but I restarted from scratch by using Hogan’s Five Lessons. It was the combination of Hogan’s precise placement of the feet and his waggle wrist action which made me first experience the feeling of hip turn meeting resistance triggering the release of the club head around the hands. The pros where I worked taught the Moe Norman single plane swing as part of the Todd Graves franchise so I tried it and discovered the way Moe gripped and swung starting with the hands down in ulnar deviation when lining up and returning there at impact created the same release of the club head around the hands and predictable control of the club face through impact. I learned about Frankenberg and Abe Mitchell later but recognized the same cause and effect of physics in their swings. Something Padraig didn’t touch on regarding why tour pros have “rediscovered” that cause and effect and are using it so effectively to bomb their drives and loft their irons and wedges is that the conventional swing wisdom of the 1980s - early 2000s, while effective, were much harder on the body, especially the lower back and legs. Swinging into resistance and letting momentum and gravity accelerate the club head around the hands is much easier on the body, especially older ones. 😂
