Paddling the Clearest Water in Florida | Rainbow Springs State Park

In this episode, we finally get to enjoy the peaceful Rainbow River and it's the most crystal clear water we've ever seen! In the last couple episodes, we encountered a scary Florida thunderstorm while floating helplessly on the water, but this time, we’re paddling around on our inflatable paddleboard! Just wait until you see the underwater scenes of the beautiful wildlife in the Rainbow River, including otters and turtles! The water is so clear, it’s really unbelievable!
On a side adventure, we also explore the ruins of an old theme park that was once at Rainbow Springs State Park. There’s even waterfalls! (Even if they are man-made.) It's an interesting look at the park's history.

    During top of covid in August I did this river and a few others on paddle board. Hardly anyone was there. It was amazing. I did see an alligator my first time in (size of my leg). It swam in front of us. It was a conquer a major fear time ! It was incredible to see so many people in the water. (Not as many as usual..but) We went here everyday for 10days. I couldn't get enough. The swimming area was so great, because the resort park part was closed for covid. We snorkeled for hours. And left every nite as the sunset and leisurely floated back down the river. Best vacation ever ! I loved reliving it through your video. Thanks !

    Rainbow Springs used to be a theme park a long time ago! It really is a beautiful park. We still need to kayak there, but the tubing is amazing. Totally with Sarah about clear water. People ask how can you swim near alligators, and I always say I don't swim in dark water. It is safer than swimming in the ocean. Great video and makes us want to go kayaking now!

    Oh yeah dark water really freaks Sarah out! It's funny when we go up north and swim in dark water she always feels like there's something lurking below. 😆 It's always a good time to get out the kayak! Great hearing from you Florida and Beyond! 💓

    @@PSAdventures while there are alligators on the Rainbow in general the river is too busy for them. The alligators prefer the sleepy quiet backwaters of the Withlacoochee. You rarely see gators and I don’t blame them, there are just too many tubers, kayakers and boats in general.

    The park used to have a tram ride that was shaped like gigantic leaves and they had a huge cage and doors would open and there we’re beautiful birds in the cage and then you rode through it. It was a nice scenic slow ride. They had a glass bottom boat ride also. It used to be a school field trip. I loved it. The ride was awesome because it wasn’t super high but high enough to see so much. I don’t remember much other wildlife. Mostly the birds. I was sad when it closed because it was simple and reasonably priced. The Rainbow River is awesome. I have floated many times down the river. We used to tie our tubes together. You could take food as long as it was in containers that were NOT disposable. I watched your episode that you spent time with the famous man. I remember so many of the beautiful homes. Haven’t done that trip in years so thanks for the memories. We would do two car loads of people park one car at KP Hole and the other by the bridge where you get out. Good times. I never seen a gator ever on any of my many floating trips. Lots of fish. ❤

    @@PSAdventures Thank you! Your Peanut Island Adventure looked like fun too. How was your trip off shore with the couple you met? NH is great. Been here since 1968 when I got back from Vietnam. The flight from Boston to West Palm Beach is 2.5-3 hours with my cat Blue. A.R.M. Loxahatchee in Boynton Beach is a beautiful park. I go there from my place on a Vespa Scooter. I never seem to get out of there until after darkness sets in. The night birds, crickets and frogs all start singing at dusk. I'm very fortunate to have my little condo down there. The sun shines just as bright for me as it does for the billionaires out on Palm Beach Island! Well, sort of.

    No monkeys on the Rainbow that I've ever seen. Silver Springs/River has monkeys though, and also served as the filming location for the original Tarzan series from the 1940s, starring Johnny Weismiller as the lead. Another river in the area, Crystal River, has a small island with monkeys, but they aren't as wild as the ones at Silver Springs. Don't get too close as I've heard they throw poop. Crystal River is a great place to view manatees as well, primarily in the summer. If you really want to encounter more gators, the Ocklawaha River is a fairly primitive river north of the Silver River. Great video, by the way.

As long as you get something comfortable and if you're hiking long distances, maybe go a half or full size larger since your feet swell on long hikes. We hope that helps and enjoy the parks! 😊

    @@PSAdventures Apparently They had the funding until hurricane Ian hit then the funding was diverted to more important hurricane relief. On a side note. I grew up in Dunnellon when the park was closed off and not being used at all. As teens we use to jump the fence and go swimming in the abandoned grounds. There are some pretty cool springs with large openings and water spewing out forcefully in areas that are now protected and can not be accessed by the public. One small inlet has a spring opening approximately three feet under the surface and the opening is a meter wide. The water comes out so quickly you can actually hover or float over it.

    So if Rainbow Springs used to be a theme park does the river go in a circle?

  • @PSAdventures

    @PSAdventures

    No the theme park was the part that used to have animals and a waterfall. The spring has a swimming area where you can launch your kayak or paddleboard and then take it out to the Rainbow River. From there if you go much further like in a tube, you'd get picked up and brought back so it's not a circle.

    Hmm.. Well I have swimed many times in the rainbow river but this was in the 1990's. You're saying alligators are appearing in the fresh water locations? Alligators will appear in the more brackish water locations normally. I've literally floated down the Rainbow River to the mouth at least a dozen times. We did have a run in with a small snapping turtle, however. I hear they now charge entry where you used to be able to just wander the grounds of the old tourist attraction. I remember a "See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil" statue and the old Aviary. Anyways, came here from your fermenting channel. Respect you want to change things up.
