Hitting the whitewater with friends is a great way to kick off a new year! We did see a lot of people out walking or jogging, in accordance with their New Year's resolutions. We started from Turner's Club Field on Route 20 in Sturbridge, paddled about 6 miles, and finished at Westville Lake. We passed through Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum, on the way. There are 2 significant sections of rapids (at the beginning and end), which are class 2, though there is one class 3 rapid. The class 3 feature is not super big, but there are a limited number of options, and it will vary depending on flow. It's also possible to launch at Farquhar Road. It is theoretically possible to do the rapids at the end on their own, as there is a park road that terminates in a parking lot by the little dam that marks the start of the rapids, but the road is closed in the winter (as well as some of the others).
