Solo Whitewater Trip in my Wild Backyard - Portaging, Class Threes & Natural Springs

Ойын-сауық

#portaging #bushwhack #outfitting
Portaging and soloing whitewater paddling up to class three was the plan for my short adventure this day. First, I go through some of my wilderness outfitting gear including my spraydeck, whitewater canoe, drybag and drysuit before heading out on my Magnetawan River canoe trip. My plan was to head downriver to a bridge where my wife would pick me up. The route would include two portages, a couple class 1 and a couple class 2 rapids as well as one big class three rapid. As soon as I ran the first rapid it felt awesome to be on the river. It was hot out for this time of year and after a portage around a big canyon and unrunnable rapid, I soon ran out of drinking water. Fortunately, it wasn't long until I found a natural spring with delicious and cold water. After dealing with the raging whitewater of a big drop, I paddled through a calm section and had a weird feeling like something was staring at me. I turned around to see a small, brand new log cabin built on top of a hill. It kind of struck me as odd that this would have given me the urge to turn around and look behind me. Before too long my trip was over and I met Tori at the bridge and I was home by dinner time. I felt tired but rejuvenated after the little outing, but more so I felt fortunate to live in the place that I do.

Jim Baird - Adventurer -Hey Jim it was great to see you a canoe again! I’m a novice paddler to say the least but I have learned more about canoeing just watching your videos than I can really even tell you. Paddle strokes reading rapids, all of it! Have you used that Werner Churchill paddle I saw you get in a past video yet? Or am I wrong about that? I have one and it’s unbelievable how I can maneuver my 11’9” canoe with in just class 1 rapids. I also have the same flat water paddle as well. Thanks for teaching me so much! I’ll be looking forward to more instruction & learning.

No problem! I have a Werner Churchill too. Most don’t really recommend using an offset, or bent shaft paddle for rapids but I think it’s fine in class ones and every twos. It’s not a overly pronounced offset in the churchill. I used it to run several long rapids last spring on my Algonquin Trout fishing trip. I’d go with a more whitewater specific paddle to step it up with rapids and also, a longer shaft for your whitewater paddle is best, especially when you’re carrying gear in your boat.

For sure! It was hard for me this spring with the covid-related camping bans in Ontario but I still managed to get on the water. More to come and thanks a lot. I am truly lucky for this and living hear was a goal we worked towards for some time. It’s a pretty remote location though we do have road access. It took some adjusting as we moved here with our new born and it’s a ways from family but we are just loving it! It can be scary for some to pick up and make a move like this even if they want to do it so, I’m very glad we did.

Hey Jim, nice video. Clever, bigger canoe and shallower draft. Laugh, you shouldn't wash the waterproof suit so warm, because they get too small very quickly and it pinches everywhere. Oh yeah, looks familiar from my biker quad stuff. Grin, I have two sizes in the cupboard by now. Summer and winter. Every bear goes well-fed into the winter. Please be careful, you have a wife and baby. Grin, avoid gardening, laugh and have fun. My kind of thing. Take good care of yourself, Greetings from Frankfurt.

That’s right, it was a hot day but too early for bugs. Ya, I’m not sure what the history of that place was but it may have been an old logging camp or hunt camp. There were no municipal dumps back then so people often had a dump on there property and buried garbage. Even pushed it off a boat into a lake. But also people often just used to trash the bush.

Love the epic music approaching that big rapid. Made it dramatic and you still nailed it. Awesome canoe skills complimented by good editing of the video.

Really liked that video. At first I laughed and told my wife that the garden would have to wait on such a beautiful day. That was about the most awesome ride I have ever seen. I have only been out once myself, but it was more mellow. Calm water on the Ottawa River. Thanks for posting that. It really made my day.

No problem, ya it was a blast. It was a beautiful day too for sure. Almost too hot at times really. The weather took a turn for the worst in the coming days and we had snow if you can believe it.

So jealous of you living on the water! It's also crazy to see how much your yoke moves when you are carrying the canoe at 14:06. My goal this year is to get a canoe (previously I've either rented or used my fathers) and hopefully have some day trips around my area (Ottawa) and videos like this keep my motivated to work towards that goal.

Great video Jim. First travelled the “Mag” 51 years ago. Remember Needle’s Eye, Three Snye, Canal, Thirty Dollar over a series of trips. Thanks for bringing it back. All the best. Hope to get out on the Grand when they open the access points.

Thanks very much! We lived in a one room cabin at the end of a dirt road in a little sliver of a rural area further south before this. They came in a bulldozed the forest behind us and put up a sub division and then people started tearing down the quaint homes and building awful mansions and we just got out of there and moved a three hour drive north from there where there’s a ton of crown land.
