Packing Tips ATV Camping Trip

I made this video to provide tips to people doing the Newfoundland ATV Trip which is 7 days or more with lots of it in the back country. It's 1200+ km (750+ miles). *Disclaimer* If you are looking on ideas on how to pack light, this video is not for you! Seriously, we don't pack light.
This is a showcase of items my friends and I take. The items shown are split over a few ATV's. We ride ATV's and Side by Sides so we have lots of room for gear. Most of the items here are related to camping. We have a lot items shown, I'M NOT SUGGESTING YOU NEED ALL THIS STUFF. Take what suits your needs. The items shown in this video were used by four or more people during a week long trip.

You're welcome. I'm glad you liked the videos. There are similar cargo bags on Amazon.ca as well. You might want to check around before making your final purchase. I hope you make it back to Newfoundland when you want to. It's such a nice place.

I love how you make a list and are the organizer. I'm that guy in our group. I lay everything out to make sure I don't forget anything, but I always do anyway - lol You forgot to mention one item - the moose - I was waiting patiently for an introduction, but it never happened - haha Good stuff. Thanx for sharin'!

Ha ha. How could I forget the moose? I'm going to do another video like that this summer but for UTV's. I'll be sure to include Moosey for that one. You're right I'm the organizer for our trips, I book the motels and cabins too. Thanks again for watching.

Informative video. You are far more organized than me! This will really help me prepare for a couple longer trips this summer. I will have to be a little more "minimalist" than this, tho. Will have to sacrifice some comfort.

+Broknex Thanks, the organization comes from years of practice. I am going 'minimalist' this summer because we are staying in motels this year so I will do another video sometime this summer.

nice tips. I was wondering how you were going to fit both of the cargo bags on your ATV, but after looking at the photos on your blog I see you how 2 ATV's to outfit. Makes sense. I have thought about using a cargo bag as well in the past, and may play around with some setups after seeing your loadout. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. Thanks for posting. If you're going to use a cargo it's helpful if you put a plywood box inside it to make it sturdy and to keep it's shape. Check out my blog and facebook page for other tips. www.newfoundlandtrailway.blogspot.ca facebook.com/crossingnewfoundlandbyatv

Incase the bugs get bad? haha "Nippers sum tick by'e!" haha (in mainland English that translates to the Mosquito's are some thick" haha heard that a million times when I was over there. Nice to see someone with the correct paper work for their bike too, few guys I go with don't have anything, drives me crazy.. I see you have a few stoves which is a good idea, have you ever seen the Coleman Single burner Dual fuel stove? I have it in some of my videos, you can use multiple types of fuel, including gasoline. Anyways I really enjoyed your video, I'm going to Subb and check out your NL trip videos !

Dang, like you said, you guys do not pack light lol. You use a trailer? Some bulky stuff for atv camping. Multiple huge lanterns and other light/flame sources, etc. multiple pans, stoves, grills, and burners, silicone spray, Hand sanitizer?? lol I guess the more you do it the more streamlined your kit gets. I like watching these to figure out what others use. I guess Im too primitive.

If you have the room why not take it? Go to the 5 minute mark on this video to see us using it all. No trailers, just the boxes you see in the video. I know guys that use trailers though. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2ig1Jh7aNixYLw.html

Hey PC MR, love the videos and your blog on travelling NL via the Trans Canada Trailway...great work!! Regarding the canvas bags in the video, did you buy them or have them made? That is a great setup for taking the required gear for such a trip. I along with some family and friends are now planning for Argentia to Port Aux Basques for this summer. Keep up the great work man, All the best.

+PettyHarbourBirm1 Thanks for the comments I appreciate it. Have fun on your trip this summer. I'm planning another one too. The cargo bags are rubber/nylon so they're weatherproof. The camo ones are Tow Ready 63000 Cargo Carrier Bags. You can buy them online. I put plywood walls inside of them to keep their shape but you don't need to do that if you don't want to. The black bag is similar but it's Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag. You can buy it on Amazon.ca. You're right, you can take a ton of gear in them! Good luck with your trip, let me know how you make out with it!

+PettyHarbourBirm1 Hey Man, Sorry I don't know how I missed your message. Thanks for the comments! I bought weather proof cargo bags online and built inner walls with thin plywood to keep their shape. I use ratchet straps to keep them in place. Check out my "What to bring" page on my blog. There are links to the bags I bought. www.newfoundlandtrailway.blogspot.ca/2011/07/what-to-bring.html

Thanks. I grew up in a small town, not sure if that qualifies as 'city guy' lol. There were probably things I brought that I didn't use but I'd rather have something and not need it than need it and not have it. I don't bring many tools with me but one of my friends that comes with me every year brings a lot of tools so we're covered that way. Now that I have a side by side I also bring a spare wheel and a jack in case I need to replace a tire on the trail.

Not sure who makes them. I bought them at Canadian Tire and it works great. I didn't find it got in the way of the shifter at all. I would recommend them for sure.

Do you live in Newfoundland? Me and a few guys from work went from makinsons to clarenville last summer and back. Was an awesome trip, apart from the fact I almost ran out of gas and was on reserve when I pulled into the gas station haha! Really impressed on how you can pack all that gear, do you pack all that on your own bike or a couple of bikes?

  • @EastCoastATV

I live in NS. Sounds like you guys had a good time. Sounds like you guys had a good time, except for almost running out of gas that is. That gear was packed in two boxes and went on two machines. Check out the my NL map. I have several gas stations marked if you do the run again. There is a gas station in Chapel Arm you could have went to, Barry's of the North Atlantic. www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1UieuRO3cdNkwrAmmxpmh_cMJ4ow Have fun out there!

How many miles can the atv run with a full tank?

  • @EastCoastATV

    @EastCoastATV

Ewin George It depends on the ATV. My old Sportsman 500 would do about 115 km. My Sportsman 850 would do about 180. My Can Am side by side would do about 250 - 280.

I bought that tank bag at Canadian Tire many years ago. I don't have it anymore and I don't remember what brand it was, sorry. It was part of a kit that included the tank bag, rear fender bags, and handle bar mitt/covers. I don't know if they sell them anymore. Here's a link to Rocky Mountain ATV that sells a few models of this type of bag online. They are really handy and pretty inexpensive. Thanks for watching. It depends on how you look at it. It was transported by two people on two separate machines and 4 people on the trip would be using a lot of the items. Besides, we had the room, so why not? If you think that's a lot you should watch my videos from our 2020 trip across NL to see the stuff we brought. This was nothing! Thanks for watching, and posting.
