Total BS. Not only was the Mk.7 gun and its 2700-lb AP shell ballistically superior to the 18.1-inch shell of the Yamato (which had notoriously bad dispersion), the Iowa class had far superior radar fire control, which would have enabled first salvo hits at ranges in excess of 20,000 meters. Moreover, with a five knot advantage over Yamato, the Iowa could dictate the range at which the engagement took place, staying within its immune zone and hammering Yamato until her directors and rangefinders were disabled--at which point Iowa could close to a killing range. It should also be noted that, at long range, the Yamato's horizontal protection was eminently vulnerable to the Iowa's 16-inch guns.
