The Pacific Electric Subway Terminal with Hollywood Cars in operation from the movie "While the City Sleeps" from 1956. This was filmed shortly after PE shut down this line.

Thank you for posting this! My friend, Ralph Cantos, has a copy of this film, He has played it for a group of PE enthusiasts many times. I had the honor of being in the Subway Terminal Station back in 1985 on the 30th anniversary of it's closing. To think that's already over 30 years ago! Now they're obliterating the concourse for commercial sales development.

The old Hollywood Subway, with actual trains! I wonder if that staircase exit was real, and where was its exit point?

LA did have a short subway during the Pacific Electric Era. It was about a mile long. The only underground stop was at the Subway Terminal. The Subway Terminal Building still exists as does parts of the old tunnel, but not all the way thru. The current LA subway does not utilize any portion of the old PE subway.

+subwaymark That's right. When the Bonaventure Hotel was built in the 70s, its basement was built into the old subway tunnel, thus blocking off any future use or rehabilitation. Since that time I think it's been filled in other spots, as well.

The movie "Down Three Dark Streets", about 45 minutes into the film, has a scene of the PE subway terminal in 1954, when the terminal was still in operation using PCC streetcars. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gp2ctriAZMXQfbg.html:58

And in case you didn't see it, a few minutes after the PE subway terminal scene, the detective who was tailing the girl calls Broderick Crawford and says she "boarded a number 3 interurban". Then the PE streetcar emerges from the tunnel with Crawford and his men chasing it along Glendale Blvd.

@@evad49h The new Regional Connector in Los Angeles is a new light rail subway that is being built to connect the Blue Line that runs from downtown to Long Beach, the Expo Line that runs to Santa Monica, and the Gold Line that runs from Pasadena to East Los Angeles together. This new light rail subway will open in the year of 2022. This new light rail subway runs right next to where the original Pacific Electric subway from the 1920's used to be.

@@xxmoviemakerxxx I saw that film of the woman boarding a Pacific Electric PCC street car at the Subway Terminal Building on Hill Street and 4th and it was impressive. Los Angeles made a huge mistake by dismantling the original light rail system operated by Pacific Electric. Now because of traffic on the freeways, growing population, and pollution, Los Angeles had to bring back rail transit in the early 1990's and the early 2000's. They now have the blue line, expo line, gold line, and the green line which are all light rail systems and then we have 2 heavy rail subway trains named the red line and the purple line.
