Reuben Kiprop Kipyego is listed as being the 33rd fastest marathoner in the world. On May 16 2021 he ran 2:03:55 at the Generali Milano Marathon. On April 10 2022 he ran 2:05:12 in the Rotterdam Marathon. His name is sometimes shown as Reuben Kiprop, Kiprop Reuben Kipyego, etc., so it's entirely possible he's done more that I haven't found.

Hes supposed to drop out so no one is trying to beat him . They probably thought he was setting too fast a pace and let him go because he was pulling out . If he was an actual runner then they would have stayed with him when he took off

Tom Byers 1981 Bislett Games was a classic win by a pacer in the 1500 metres.

Yes, I saw that race. It was fantastic! Plus, Tom fulfilled what he was required to do, pace wise. But the field decided not to follow him... and he just kept going. Then WON.

To see another pacer win, check out Tom Byers back in the early 80’s. Gotta love an underdog!

Depends what pace he was asked to do. If he was asked to do 2:05 pace to 20 miles then he was pretty accurate - not his fault if the others couldn't match it. BTW some pacers make a good living from it, as they can often pace multiple races per season. And most of them would be way up in the national rankings of almost any country other than Kenya & Ethiopia. I think you're doing them a disservice by saying they're too slow to run in the race.

Unless the pacer's contract specifically precluded him from finishing or winning the race, more power to him!

No, although things have relaxed a lot from my days, a Pacer MUST be an actual official race entrant. That means they can continue after they have fulfilled their "pacing" requirements. Remember, they are employed to do a certain task. ie take the field through to X kilometers at a certain pace. Providing they do that they have fulfilled their contract. As official race entrants, if they wish to continue, they can. NO they are not obligated to drop out!

Pacers in such races are pro runners, often not worse than athletes aiming to win. They decide to pace rather than compete to diversify the economic risk. Pacers get considerably fees than the prizes, which they could get for winning the race or podium placing but their money for pacing is guaranteed only provided that they reach the agreed stage of the race (typically halfway of 25th kilometer), whereas considerably higher money prizes are paid for winning and podium placing. Obviously, for an athlete reaching 25 km mark as a pacer is much more likely that winning the race. Besides, there is a huge difference in required recovery time after a 25 or 30 km run at race pace and the full marathon. So, pacers can take up marathons even 8-10 times a year, whereas athletes running a full marathon not more than 3 times yearly. So, if a pro runner at certain level acts as a pacer or a regular competitor is all down to his appetite for risk taking, driving his business approach to the career rather than to his actual sport’s abilities.

First guy across the the tape wins. Does he get to keep both the winners purse and the fee paid for the pacing duties. Perhaps he’ll consider sharing a portion of the spoils with the other pacers. Interesting video. This may happen more than we know. Imagine this happening at one of the majors.

Please note: EVERYONE over 20 is classed as an Open Grade runner. There is no actual category of "Pro" runner. It's simply a label that gets used by people that don't understand what is happening. Yes, a small few actually have contracts for a certain club/team. Or have various sponsorship arrangements eg Shoes, Sportswear, watches, sunglasses etc. So can qualify to be called a "Pro" runner. But if a person is good enough, ANY PERSON, they can win and claim prize money, if there is some. As official race entrants they are eligible for prize money. Once a person performs well, winning races or running fast times, they get referred to by race Organisors as Elite runners. That small handful get placed on the front line in races or often start a few minutes before the main field. To give them clear starts, away from the riff-raff (LOL Joke). In marathons, often a pacer might be a 5k/10k Track runner who should obviously have no problem forcing whatever pace is required, until a certain distance, say 15k. Then maybe another pacer takes over who is more proficient at longer distances, through to 30k/35k. That pacer might have the strength/stamina/speed to carry on past their agreed pacing distance. We see this all the time in Track races where the pacer in a 1500m race might be a 400m runner who takes them through to 600m, then an 800m pacer takes them to 1200m, then it's anybodies race! Also to avoid the horray-henrys in road races that sprint off just to say they led the race for 100 meters! Nothing worse than the morons that position themselves at the front, knowing they are only capable of very slow times. They get in everybody's way and cause falls/trips etc.
