Pac-Man of the Microworld
Ғылым және технология
Hey there! I have a silly looking single-celled to show you. This is a species of Campanella. They usually attach themselves to things with something called stalk but rarely I found them moving like this in my slides and it kinda looks like Pac-Man. 😂
.
They move with the beating of the hair-like structures called cilia. Can you see them? They are also specialized in bringing the food particles and other small critters in to the mouth of the cell. Campanella attach themselves to anything they find comfortable with a stalk and uses these cilia to pull something delicious to the cell! 😋 And if they don't like their place they simply break the stalk and leave, they obviously have no attachment issues! 😌
.
This Campanella came from a sample I collected yesterday.
.
I went to collect samples but recently weather was horrible. Pond was frozen, I managed to make a hole in the 25 centimeters thick ice with a screwdriver, it took an hour! And collected 3 jars of water. One of the jars literally exploded when I was tightening the lid because of the sudden temperature change, I didn't get injured but got all wet and I was freezing when I finally got home.
.
Today I woke up a bit feverish and my throat is killing me but you know what my samples are full of life so it worth it! There are even water bears! 🤤 Thank you for reading! ❤️

Pacman with bulldozer controls, now that's something.
i like the random clenches it makes whenever it stops something. i just hear it going *HNNNGH* every time.
He swims around looking for tasty morsels and scrunches up suddenly as if he tasted something nasty. Too cute!

I love its spinning motion allowing someone to appreciatre that its a tridimensional being and not just something that exists on a 2 -dimensional plane
You painted a pretty funny mental picture of you stabbing a frozen pond with a screwdriver for an hour 🤣. Well worth the effort. Very interesting video.
I knew this looked familiar... I thought the spore version would be innacurate, but I guess not
Isn’t there something about a correlation between size and perception of time? These microscopic creatures probably see things a lot slower than we see them.
Those sharp contractions when it suddenly decides to turn is very weird and interesting
great dedication! hope you feel better soon
Lol who else was going do-do-do-do-do-do in their head lol Cute little guy
This is really Fascinating stuff that i've never thought much about or seen before... I found your Channel just Yesterday with the dying/dissolving Cell then the single cell eating the animal... I'm gonna probably go threw all your Videos now lol. I'm fascinated by this, Thanks for sharing, and Subbed.
How does it know how to turn and where to go? This leads to a broader question: where do chemical reactions stop and "sentient" decisions start?
Wow loving your channel!!!
I could watch this all day long
It sort of looks like it's a tiny robot running a program, like when it turns it turns in a certain amount of degrees and it reruns the program until it goes to the direction it wants the it activates a forward movement program and repeats this process until it attaches to something
I always believed that when you commit a murder you are reincarnated to this little guy and it takes you many lives to get all the way back to human
I'm guessing that if we find liquid water on ANY PLANET, there has to be some kind of life there in the micro world.

it doesn't quite work like that... there are single-celled organism that can reach more than 1cm so it's not a "new world", but yeah just looking at your fingertip and you're seeing thousands of cells that construct its materials... i just find really cool when they die, their outer layer (plasmatic walls, at least what they're called here in Brazil) tries to match up again, expelling out in the process all the organels and the nucleus (if it has)... and the genetic material in it... aah just too much to talk about...! º^º'

Evolution of species in real life. 😄 For being so small, that little bigger can really move about. It also looked like the Campanella had chloroplasts in its body. Do they also photosynthesize?

How does little bubly navigate? Can he sense or "smell" chemicals around him? He's clearly changed trajectory many times as if he had noticed something"interesting".
