Pac-Man of the Microworld

Ғылым және технология

Hey there! I have a silly looking single-celled to show you. This is a species of Campanella. They usually attach themselves to things with something called stalk but rarely I found them moving like this in my slides and it kinda looks like Pac-Man. 😂
.
They move with the beating of the hair-like structures called cilia. Can you see them? They are also specialized in bringing the food particles and other small critters in to the mouth of the cell. Campanella attach themselves to anything they find comfortable with a stalk and uses these cilia to pull something delicious to the cell! 😋 And if they don't like their place they simply break the stalk and leave, they obviously have no attachment issues! 😌
.
This Campanella came from a sample I collected yesterday.
.
I went to collect samples but recently weather was horrible. Pond was frozen, I managed to make a hole in the 25 centimeters thick ice with a screwdriver, it took an hour! And collected 3 jars of water. One of the jars literally exploded when I was tightening the lid because of the sudden temperature change, I didn't get injured but got all wet and I was freezing when I finally got home.
.
Today I woke up a bit feverish and my throat is killing me but you know what my samples are full of life so it worth it! There are even water bears! 🤤 Thank you for reading! ❤️
