I was surprised not a lot in plant community tackled about light and plant requirement. The first thing I learned before buying my first grow light was to understand PAR or commonly called Photosynthetically Active Radiation. This will tell you a lot how much light is beneficial for the plant. Lumen is a measurement that our eyes perceived. It may be brighter in our eyes but it so dim for the plants. His analogy of the 2 hose with same power but different size output is best to describe and understand PAR. I once had a LED light that’s giving me a PAR output around 400-600 which is good if your growing vegetative. But I noticed my plant was growing abnormally even though it has a good PAR reading. Only to realised that they’re actually 6000-8000 kelvin. Still useable for plant but on blue side of spectrum, plants thrive better on 3000-5000 kelvin, this sort of mimic the sun daylight and work best for any type of indoor plant. Mars-Hydro 1000 series that’s the grow light he is using for his monsteras. Very good growlight. Other alternatives brands are Spider-farmer, Viparspectra, Maxisun. They’re not cheap but work so well for indoor plant. There’s a couple of videos that tackle PAR thoroughly. Give yourself a chance to see it and you will learn a lot. For all the people that growing hydroponics indoor, light is the biggest topic, second to plant nutrient requirement.

Coming from hydroponics, these things arn't that complex but for some reason aroid growers shun the science. It's not scary at all. That said, I could barely find any information for PPFD (heck, give me lux even.) values and DLI values online for aroid plants, and in particular, variegated plants. People just say, they need more than their non-variegated ones. How much more, exactly? 10%? 20%? Would be nice to get some input here, getting a couple more variegated plants.

This was a really great video! Love how chaotic his place was and it really spoke to me. My place is small and I have a ton of light since I live in a basement apartment. I value function over ‘aesthetics’ right now. Maybe in the future I’ll care about how things look but I’d rather have happy plants especially when they weren’t exactly cheap. I’m still learning how much light for how long and how far. I’ve run into the chlorotic looking leaves because I had plants too close. We need more practical videos like this because I literally went through research mode regarding lights and I did get a lot of information skewed towards crops or marijuana. Giving experienced people like this a platform is amazing. Thanks!

I highly recommend to everyone just buy it and grow it!! Don't be afraid just get it and take care of it plants are so rewarding!!!! Great video I'm subbed!! It's science Bro!! LoL

That is a nice work place habitat! I've also got a plant cave work space and I've been experimenting with light as well for my indoor garden this past year. I've been focusing on creating indoor island habitats with glass wear for water features. I've also harvested various moss and lichen from my backyard and have been integrating that into my island designs. I've currently got 5 big islands in my house, each with a different plant theme and climate. I tried to recreate a Galapagos, Azores, and a Indonesia/New Caledonia style climates on my indoor islands. Outdoor conditions are still important with respect to indoor humidity I've discovered. I do live on the foggy coast of NorCal so that helps my indoor tropical plants to stay a little more damp. I've got an average humidity reading of about %60 here in my indoor garden on the foggy coast of Humboldt. Happy gardening!

Great video. I have these industrial lights in a large machine shop, and they also installed them in my office. It's a high ceiling. I do have a couple plants on my desk and they love the lights. I do have some windows that are higher up, but they don't really get a lot of sun. Most of the sun ends up on my computer monitors and desk. I'm actually going to plant bamboo in some pots and leave them under the window so they grow up to the widows to provide shade.

I have had a juvenile Monstera Deliciosa beside my desk with the tower & monitors blocking the 8 foot sliding glass door that's a good 10-12 feet away, and a 4 foot hanging 4 tube full spectrum light with the end of it about 3 feet diagonally from the plant. I only crack the blinds in the morning for 'no' direct sun & open them once the full Eastern sun has past. Even so, it leaned very heavily towards the monitors & up to face the glass doors instead of the hanging light with a Southern facing 3 foot glass door beyond it that was so much closer to it. To me this was bizarre, bc the full spectrum was right there, but it totally went for the "blue Eastern sky." I recently moved it to the other side of the monitors to give it what it clearly wants.

We both have very stressful jobs so I want our living room to have a calming zen aura when we come home. I just look at Kelvin and called it a day too tbh, but it’s not optimal. Jeff’s explanation makes sense as in how much light the plant gets also takes into account how close the light is and also how long it’s on for. What’s the real difference between 4000k and 5000k? And what is too much? I’m in the same boat you are haha, but this hopefully offers some considerations for those who want to take it up a notch. Cheers!

It’s from like lack of proper air circulation, so the top of your medium is staying wet too long. If you always bottom water, make sure you are also occasionally/monthly flushing the salts from your medium by watering from the top until it flushes through and out the bottom. Accumulation of fertilizer salts in your pot will hurt your plant. Best wishes 🪴💕
